Why can't I wear this to a wedding?

I have a dilemma and would value some advice, please.
My eldest GD gets married in a few months time. Her Mum, my eldest DD, has asked me what I am wearing for the day.
Just before Covid, my cousin's GD got married and I bought a lovely 2-piece outfit. It is a coffee coloured lace skirt and matching top, both lined. It fits as if it had been made for me, is very comfortable to wear having an elasticated waistband and I like it.
When I told my DD I was planning to give this outfit a second airing, she was horrified. She says I must have something new. My argument is that 7 years ago I went to this wedding alone as it was some distance away so the family haven't seen me in it.
Should I stick to my guns and weather the inevitable fallout, especially on the day or should I surrender and cough up for a new outfit that will likely never see the light of day again?

I think you should wear it just buy a lovely bright hat, bag and shoes to bring up to date. Always refuse where you can.

If you like hats you could wear a nice hat with it.

You’re the mother of the bride ! That’s quite a key role emotionally and physically for her and for you .. your daughter prob feels you’re not placing enough significance in it by not buying something specially and wearing something bought for another brides wedding .. I understand where she is coming from even though it seems a waste of an outfit .

Ignore half of that .. misread that you’re the grandmother ! In which case this is your daughter putting pressure for the same reasons as above as she is the mother of the bride !

Generally speaking, I don't think you should wear an outfit a second time if you are the mother of the bride or groom. A new outfit is best.

Otherwise, just consider whether anyone will be at this wedding who was at the last one.

Also, what about photographs? You need to look fairly different if you are in two different sets of wedding photos.

Those would be my two priorities.

Wear the outfit you have. What’s the point of wasting money on another? Unless of course your daughter would like to pay for the new one.😀

Your outfit sounds classy. Agree, if your daughter wants you to wear something new. Ler her pay for it.

I'd be more than likely to pass it by the bride to see if she is happy as it is really her day. I don't think an outfit is worth upsetting somebody over but if she is happy with it then your daughter should be too.

My daughter often dislikes my outfits because she wouldn't be seen dead in them. We are different generations so I think it is to be expected. That said, my sister and I have very different tastes too and we are only 20 months apart. xx

I have a very environmentally conscious friend who bought a dress in a charity shop for her daughter’s wedding. She dyed it and paid to have it altered and it looked…awful!

Anyone who had a specific colour theme for the bridal party could jump in the lake as far as I’m concerned.

Lathyrus3 sorry, you are spouting absolute rubbish🙄

Lathyrus lace outfit, neutral shades etc etc.

Primrose53 So the groom's son allowed that to happen?! I'm speechless. Says a lot about who wears the trousers in his marriage! What a b*tch.

Lathyrus3 Mon 17-Aug-26 18:15:43

Ok.

Different groups of people have different etiquettes I guess.

I didn't realise till this thread but I can see lots of people would feel ok about going to a wedding in a neutral lacy outfit.

Horses for courses🙂

Maybe you could dye it, depending on the fabric and if it's likely to shrink. If you go for navy it might end up a muddy colour, so how about green? Or red? A brightish red would end up not so bright. Lots of options for colours. As someone said, ask your granddaughter what she thinks.

MissAdventure Mon 17-Aug-26 18:45:46

You could take it to a seamstress, and ask her to update anything which is dated.
Perhaps a few alterations might ensure it passes your daughters exacting standards.
Perhaps though, your girl would just like you to splash out on yourself, for all the best reasons?

As long as it doesn't clash with anyone in the main bridal party, that is an important aspect. When my daughter got married 13 years ago, her nasty MIL deliberately chose something that clashed with the bridesmaids dresses. The bridesmaids dresses were a lovely soft shade of mauve, medium colour. Mine was a muted lavender colour that blended in nicely. They were all made by a friend of my younger daughter who had her own dressmaking business. Her MIL mentioned two dresses, one RED and the other green. My daughter obviously thought neither would go, but thought the green would blend in better, so she said the green one is nice. MIL wore the RED one! At the wedding my mum who was in a wheelchair as she had motor neurone disease and couldn't speak, wrote on her pad "I don't like that woman in red". My sister said "that's xxxxx'x mum. She quickly scribbled it out. Very discerning woman my mum.

Probably this bit, Lathyrus3:

"suzabke?"

Not sure what language it is 😁

Lathyrus3 Mon 17-Aug-26 22:29:27

Yes that was rubbish wasn't it🤣🤣🤣🤣

I had to think very hard about what wotd I started with.

It was sizeable.

A combination of wobbly fingers and auto correct 😬

It promoted me to find out how to turn auto correct off👏

If only someone could do something about the fingers….

JenniRen Mon 17-Aug-26 22:44:47

Even Google Translate couldn't help me!

Wear what you want to wear!

monami Tue 18-Aug-26 08:28:05

Ask her if she's going to pay for it, speak up, don't be a doormat

Indiebee Tue 18-Aug-26 12:46:36

Sounds lovely - wear it! Especially with colourful shoes, bag, jewellery if appropriate. You can then fit in with your GD's colour scheme if any. What a waste otherwise?

My mother re-married and wore a lovely cream and lace skirt and jacket . When my DD , her eldest granddaughter got married two years later my DD was the first to say to my mum to wear her wedding outfit . She did , complete with the matching hat and looked lovely .

Smileless2012 Tue 18-Aug-26 13:47:45

Chestnut the OP is the bride to be's GM, not her mother and she's also told us that no one in the family has ever seen her in the outfit.
