Well it was on the BBC and I love children's books!

I was interested to see what this book was all about so took a quick look. Let's be fair, it is a first attempt.

The illustrations are lovely, very soft almost pastel shades, ideal for gentle bedtime reading. Yawn.

The people are a bit thin and wooden and I was disappointed the dogs weren't in the book.

Now for the rhyming. I'm not sure about the cadence, very contrived. Where are all the commas?
I don't know when to breathe.
The script is tiny, I need two pairs of glasses. Actually, come to think of it the print should be far bigger if it is designed for younger children to read

Would you buy it for your grandchildren? Does it resonate and get any message across? £12.99 reduced to £9.99. Is you want it, please hurry it might just sell out.

An unintended pun Callistemon. I love Stickman too.

I've been referring to the author so I can't be accused of 'Meghan bashing' hmm

Could be anyone....grin

Callistemon Wed 05-May-21 11:39:58

Hmmm....sounds a bit Hallmark cards doesn’t it !

maddyne and Lucca
That could be an exciting new opportunity - writing the verses for Hallmark cards! Someone has to do it.

Looking at that verse purely from the point of view of someone who would be choosing a book for a small child - No, it is not suitable at all and would not grab a child's attention at all or inspire them.

It is tosh.

Mine loved Dear Zoo by Rod Campbell, The Owl Babies by Martin Waddell, The Tiger who came to Tea, Julia Donaldson books and similar books.
Spot the Dog by Eric Hill.

Authors who know what interests small children.

Children know what they like and will run to the bookshelf to choose - often the same book over and over again.

Sorry, typo - maddyone

maddyone Wed 05-May-21 11:43:29

OMG, I wouldn’t even be able to write tosh for a Hallmark card! I’ve got about the same amount of talent in that direction as Meghan appears to have. I’ve only seen that one page, so maybe the others are better.

maddyone Wed 05-May-21 11:44:49

Maddyne a new suggestion for a Gransnet poster grin or these days perhaps a child’s name grin

Good thinking Callistemon.

So are the proceeds from the book sales going to a charity?
A childrens charity?

Why does that matter? Gosh the barrels’s bottom is getting a lot of scraping on this thread isn’t it - it’s probably got a hole in it by now ??

Smileless2012 Wed 05-May-21 12:47:08

I've seen that too Sparklefizz. Corrine Averiss' book published in 2018 'The Boy and the Bench' about a father and son bonding; oh dearblush.

Why is it scraping the bottom of the barrel asking if the proceeds from any sales are going to charity? It does look very much as one of the main selling points is the fact that she's the Duchess of Sussex and I understood that neither H & M are to use their 'status' for their own financial gain.

I hope Corrine Averiss sues!

Thank you for getting my drift smileless.
I meant like Book Trust to which thousands of authours donate books to give to kids.
Joanna Trollope is ambassador, so a celebrity author doing good.

Namsnanny Wed 05-May-21 13:05:58

Hasnt Catherine (DofC) released some photos recently?
Meghan (DofS) usually manages to 'announce' something when the RF do something of note?
I'm just wondering.

I dont think its an 'in' thing Callistemon Fergie did hers a number of years ago didnt she?

But if you mean its an easy well trodden route to keep yourself in the public eye (whilst maybe making a few bob) I think you may be right.

Smileless2012 Wed 05-May-21 13:07:01

We'll have to wait and see Sparklefizz as apparently it's not just the story but the illustrations that are alike.

I was also thinking of Prince Charles where all the sales proceeds went to charity Lilliesmile.

merlotgran Wed 05-May-21 13:10:53

Will Oprah be adding it to the pile of books she likes to bestow on unsuspecting kids for their birthdays?

Calendargirl Wed 05-May-21 13:12:09

The book we saw Meghan reading (or trying to read) to Archie some time ago, the Oprah endorsed one I think, looked pretty boring, ‘Duck Rabbit’ the title?

Poor Archie kept squirming away, didn’t seemed captivated by it. Let’s hope Meghan’s is better received by him.

Alegrias1 Wed 05-May-21 13:12:12

Really?

Try putting down your knitting needles and reading the Boy on the Bench . It has nothing at all to do with a boy bonding with his father on a bench.

And do it continues - drip after drip after drip

Grandma70s

Enid Blyton write some lovely books on nature study in her early days, but even as a child I thought her adventure stories and Famous Five etc very dull. What boring children! I much preferred Noel Streatfeild (Ballet Shoes etc) who wrote about fully formed characters who did interesting things.

Grandma70s I loved Noel Streatfield and passed the stories on to my daughter who also loved them. Our favourite was definitelyWhite Boots.

Well at least I’m not spreading in utterly evil misinformation about plagiarism
