Just a little self-indulgent weep

I know everyone on this forum has real problems to deal with (so do I!) but please let me have just a little shower of tears, then I'll buck up.
It's a mild, sunny day today so DH (stroke survivor) decided to "have an hour in the garden". This usually means he grabs the loppers and proceeds to chop something down (aka "tidying up"). I didn't think there was much damage he could do today, as the tree men came last week and gave everything a good tidy up.
I went out just now to ask if he wants a cuppa and saw that a rose I've been nurturing for 10 years is now a 6-inch stump, with one valiant leaf hanging on. I know he can't help it (b****y brain damage) but I've wept all the same.
OK, folks, that's all I needed. Back to whatever kind of day we're all coping with...

Just sending you a huge virtual hug x

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 29-Oct-26 14:02:29

Aw that’s indeed a hard chew.
Hope you feel better a bit for your cry and the share. x

Ziggy62 Thu 29-Oct-26 14:05:03

Oh im sorry sorry
I can understand how you feel
Glad you could come on here for a virtual hug xxx

You are welcome to have a 'break out' chat here.
I don't know enough about roses to say whether or not this enthusiast 'prune' might lead to a strong regrowth next summer.
Meanwhile here is a virtual bouquet just for you that won't fade 💐

Oh what a shame. I'm so sorry to hear about your poor wee rose. Maybe it'll storm back all the better next season.

Grab the cuttings, ideally with a woody base, strip off some of the lower leaves, ideally cover the twig with rooting hormone (seaweed) pop in some compost, then pop the entire thing pot and all into SEALED clear plastic bags, keep warm, moist and with sunlight, and they should root. Now is the BEST time to root woody cuttings. Roses root well. Thank hubby for all the new rose plants! Alternatively, go to a garden centre and treat yourself to a new rose! (Harkness Roses much better than David Austin.) Best wishes.

If your DH chopped a climbing rose, yes that is a big loss, however if he chopped any other type of rose he probably did you a favour. I do sympathise.

I have a climbing rose in the garden that was planted before we moved here 34 years ago.
Several times I've cut it right down to a few inches high and every time it's grown again.
I've done it again recently as it had got out of hand and was awash with honeysuckle growing through it.
I'm quietly confident they'll both be back next year 🤞🏻

(My husband is forbidden to touch anything in the garden, but he will put a heap of my prunings through the shredder).

Sending a huge virtual hug and hoping that those who are optimistic about the rose’s survival are right.

PS. Your weep is definitely not self indulgent.

Casdon Thu 29-Oct-26 14:29:12

That must be hard, sorry you are upset. If you protect your rose as best you can from frost die back, either with fleece or a cloche, it should be okay I think.

CarrotTop Thu 29-Oct-26 16:15:50

Misotapetis, yes it is a climbing rose, which I bought for £1.50 from the "almost dead" section of a garden centre years ago. A second look this afternoon has revealed one solitary climbing stem, which looks like a sucker but has grown up through surrounding shrubs. So it may come back after all! Thanks too for the tips on propagating from cuttings. I didn't know that! Feeling much more cheerful, thanks to everyone. flowers

Oh gosh that’s a shame you have my empathy

My late mum was a fantastic gardener and always pruned roses to within an inch of their lives! They always came back beautifully.

Yes.

I'm an enthusiastic pruner, not every year, but it does seem to do some roses good. As long as a bud is left on the stem, with a bit of luck it should be fine. It's a bit early because ours are still flowering and have more flower buds too.

As for the climbers, perhaps a no more gentle prune is better, but ours are growing so high I might be tempted to hack them more than usual.

I second that.

So sorry that you have this burden to bear. Sometimes it is things like a rose being hacked to pieces that really gets to us.

And it doesn't really help to know that he cannot help doing this sort of thing, does it?

It is hard to love the person a loved one has turned into, so come back next time it all gets on top of you.

That is what we are here for.

I'd also use it as an excuse to go and buy a new rose, or order a bare root one as once planted these do very well. The good online sites give excellent descriptions and details of size. (Peterbealesroses.com, davidaustinroses.co.uk, ashridgetrees.co.uk, roses.co.uk)

I pruned a rose a couple of years ago very hard back and kept the clippings to pot up by just putting in the soil in a tub. NB .the right way up. And now have a small new rose bush in the tub and the actual bush grows back very strong each year.

I was always frightened of doing the wrong thing to roses, but my goodness the one I have is a hardy monster with beautiful scented blooms grown from cuttings from my late best friend's rose bush.
I hope yours does well next year and try planting the cuttings.

Oh no!

Sending you big huge hug 🤗🤗🤗

When we first moved into our first house from a one bedroom first floor flat I was very happy to have a garden for the first time.

As I worked shifts, I was off during the week while my DH was at work. Full of enthusiasm, I spent ages clearing a border. I dug it over thoroughly and planted a selection of perennials I had bought earlier that day.

The next day was a Saturday and my husband, who was not a keen gardener, announced that he was going to do some work in the garden as it was still pretty untidy. I told him I had made a start on one of the borders. When I came home from work he remarked that I hadn't done a very good job on the border as it was still full of weeds. He had pulled up all my perennials, put them on the compost heap and then covered them with cuttings from the various shrubs and bushes he had pruned back. He was never let loose in the garden unsupervised again.

I must admit I did brush back a tear.

I'm passing you a tissue 🤧 and sending a hug . I'm sure it's just the last straw for you . You love your husband and you know he can't help it but that doesn't protect you from the grief of so much that caring has and is causing you .
My other half hacks everything back , recently did it to two buxos in pots I'd bought for either side of my front door . I was fuming, and he's got no health issue to blame it on other than getting carried away with the clippers. They're now dead and he's insisting they'll come back . They're as dead as dead can be . I felt like howling , they weren't cheap .
I sympathise , I hope the rose comes back 🙏 and I hope things get easier . You're allowed to cry every now and again 😢

sparkle1234 Thu 29-Oct-26 17:36:06

Magenta8 I think our husbands must be related lol . Everything's a weed smile

Shelflife Thu 29-Oct-26 17:43:46

You are allowed that self indulgent weep! Knowing your DH can't help it does not ease the situation for you - I understand that only too well as I care for my husbaand and we negotiate his Alzheimers Disease.
I am no rose expert but you have been given some great advice, fingers crossed 🤞 your lovely rose will bounce back.

CarrotTop, my heart goes out to you.
I find a good cry alone somewhere, usually the bathroom, does help.
Is not self indulgent, is a safety valve.
Sending a big hug and wish I could make you a cuppa ❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹
