What I did today! The next chapter!

One of those days today! I was trying to get packed for my hospital stay, tidy up the house. I did a woollen wash and put stuff out on the line. I was aiming to get out in time for lunch with my knitting group friends.

I then started to clean the E bay high chair DD bought for use here. Not a good idea! If you put a tap on, make sure the plug is out of the sink. Don’t go off and do something else!

So I rushed back into the flood, upstairs to the airing cupboard, got out the “doggy towels” to mop up. I cleared up, whilst paddling about in the room in wet slippers, socks and trouser bottoms. The tap had over flowed across the work surface into the cupboard underneath. This soaked a box of washing powder, which is now in the shed drying out. The box will need re-gluing.
There is moral here somewhere.

During this crisis I was talking on the phone to SIL who rang to wish me well in hospital.

I have now girded up my loins for parathyroid surgery tomorrow.
Due to go in at 8am beds permitting with hopefully just an overnight stay. I have no idea how I will feel afterwards.
Probably come home with a bolt through my neck! grin

Very happily my lovely DD is coming over on Saturday to cook me a meal and administer TLC, her suggestion, knowing that her father is as much use as a chocolate fireguard at such times. Its very useful having a nurse in the family she was so lovely today, and I will see DGS. smile

Good news all round soop, and especially about Rory! grin

Ella46 Tue 26-Mar-13 16:26:47

Glad to see that you're back soop, safe and sound, as well as the men in your life sunshine

harrigran Tue 26-Mar-13 16:29:28

So pleased you are okay soop, quite shocking to see on the TV sunshine

soop Tue 26-Mar-13 16:33:49

You lot are so kind. Have just had a call from our pal in the village. She's still waiting for the power to be restored. The village hall is open as a soup kitchen for those who need warming up on the outside and in. Also heard that our power may go off and on for a wee while yet. There are so many men working their socks off to put everything back as it should be. I think that they deserve a VERY WELL DONE in the face of so many difficulties. wine

Rory purrs a thanks for all his fan mail. blush

I must be stark staring bonkers. I know I said I was bored but I was secretly enjoying a light week. Cardiff have just rung 'Dr x , can you possibly sit tomorrow in Cardiff?'
Guess what I said?

soop Tue 26-Mar-13 17:09:18

Tell us, Galen...was it polite? wink

Galen Tue 26-Mar-13 17:13:02

After seeing all the men from the electricity people working like beavers night and day up there, I was amazed to hear a man on Arran this lunchtime complaining that not enough was being done! Arran seems to have got more attention and publicity on the news than Kintyre, seems a tad unfair?

soop Tue 26-Mar-13 18:15:54

I agree with you, number and from various reports, the engineers deserve a very special mention.

I have spent a lot of time today updating and installing our anti- virus software; not a difficult job, and one I'm used to doing. So - downloaded a package for 3 computers, installed it with relative ease on two (one laptop, one netbook) the spent the afternoon in battle with the third (laptop). Started because Theseus, whose laptop it was, hadn't backed it up for ages (or, to be honest, I'd forgotten) and so it went on....

But - done - interspersed with a little, light, evening shopping and wine with DD and DGD, which probably oiled the wheels in my brain.

I locked my husband out of the house this morning. It was an accident honest! he had gone out about 9:45am to a U3A meeting very locally.

I went out at about 10:30 and noted the front door wasn't locked but I didnt think about it.

When I came back after about two hours he was pottering about outside the house looking very cold! He hadn't taken his door key with him. I have no idea how long he was out there. Why he didn't go off somewhere to shelter I don't know!

Men!

gracesmum Tue 26-Mar-13 21:30:47

Glad soop and all those affected by the snow are now electrical again!
I was taken out to lunch by my oldest school friend who is staying with her daughter in London on "Granny duty". She took me to the rather grand but exquisite Gilbert Scott restaurant at the refurbed St Pancras hotel. Beautiful surroundings and a lovely meal. I could get used to this sort of life!!

Probably boring to read - but a typical day in the life of..............
I spent the early part of this morning preparing GCSE revision papers for my two boys. I then drove to the nearest town to meet with an ex-student at a Mediation meeting as she is divorcing her abusive husband. One and a half hours later and I'm off to Boots to buy formula milk for poorly grandson (which I had strict instructions to hide as my daughter is feeling very fragile at her current inability to feed baby herself). Bought a sandwich and coffee to eat on the go then made a quick visit to a bookshop to buy cards and gifts for 2 and 3 year old 'surrogate' grandchildren before going to help out at the Easter Fair at grandson's school. He won the prize for the best Easter Bonnet! grin Although I must confess it was my daughter in law and NOT his mother whose artistic skill was honoured. Off then to B&Q to pick up something builderish for the Wonderful Man - driving home quickly, but within the speed limit (don't do fast) in order to be at a parents evening for the boys. Spent a frantic hour whizzing round teachers who all said lovely things about my boys and how well they've adapted to their new country, culture and education system. Lots of hard work ahead still, but it was nice to get some appreciation for the work put in at home too. The WM and I made dinner for the family together and had just finished eating when the phone rang. It was a friend who lives in another country and explained she has just received a 24 page letter from my mentally ill relative and was scared. She thinks he is a danger to himself or to my parents in law. (!!!!!) Spent more than an hour talking to her about the situation and she's agreed to copy the letter so that (at last) I will have some concrete evidence to show the psychiatrist, GP and mental health team. Wrapped up gifts bought earlier, wrote cards - and here I am checking up on Gransnet just before getting into bed AND I AM EXHAUSTED!!!!!! moon

How are you grannylin ?

Flowerofthewest Tue 26-Mar-13 22:47:28

I woke up on sofa after also baby sitting my darling little grandson as his mum is also poorly and very pregnant. He sleeps downstairs with me as there is no room in our bedroom and other rooms full.(one with husbands 'study bits' and other box room. My youngest son is occupying the fourth bedroom.

Anyway he woke me by rolling dinosaur eggs across the floor and building mega brick aeroplanes. We had a cuddle, he peeked over my bum (I way lying on sofa) and said 'I wuv oo nanny' my heart melted.

By the time his mum had walked round - 10 am the whole of my lounge floor was a mega brick empire.

Isn't it funny Ella that we both feel the same about these particular children, I don't know if its is because I was there at his birth or because he and his mum were there through my cancer scare and kept me company during my recovery. I am so close to him and I to am overwhelmed with love for him. I absolutely adore the bones of him.

Ella46 Tue 26-Mar-13 23:10:16

Flower, I was working full time and lived a bit farther away when my other gds were babies, plus my dd's in laws were all over everything, and I was on my own and couldn't manage to do the same trips and presents!

Now I live just near to my ds and am the first port of call smile.
My dgd has auburn hair, which all my family had too, so I feel a real connection.
Her mum is half Chinese and my son has dark hair, so dgd stands out like a sore thumb!

Grannylin Wed 27-Mar-13 08:37:38
