Over-exposed

Don't you think that some stars/celebs ruin it for themselves with overexposure? We saw Alan Titchmarsh on everything, then Stephen Fry, Benedict Cumberbatch and now Claire Balding. Not even on programmes suited for their talents . Titchmarsh's so called chat show being an example. Maybe it's getting the money whilst you can, but I end up switching off as it drives me nuts. It's like the programme on Buckingham Palace presented by that newsreader Fiona Wotsit - just seemed to be an excuse to parade all her new frocks.

Gorki Thu 23-May-13 09:38:53

Agreed ! My son made that exact same comment about Clare Balding last night. And does a day ever go by without Simon Cowell getting a mention in the Press?

feetlebaum Thu 23-May-13 10:33:43

You can't really compare Clare Balding and the egregious Simon Cowell!
She seems to be up to any call on her talents - very good on QI for example.

merlotgran Thu 23-May-13 10:52:56

Caroline Quentin is getting on my nerves.

Ana Thu 23-May-13 10:54:17

Oh, I so agree, merlot...hmm

Gagagran Thu 23-May-13 11:41:03

I think Fiona Bruce is a very poor news reader actually. She's OK as a presenter but she reads the news badly - quite often "gabbles" and over-emphasises things. It's funny how distracting it is! Personal opinion of course - some must like her style.

Women bashing again?

whenim64 Thu 23-May-13 12:19:59

It's Philip Schofield that seems to be showing up everywhere when I put the TV on.

grumppa Thu 23-May-13 12:27:02

Gagagran, I'm with you on Fiona Bruce's reading of the news. She drives me mad for just the reason you gave.

Gally Thu 23-May-13 12:37:27

Oh yes! Caroline Quentin is too gushy by half - she drives me mad. I quite like Fiona Bruce but can't seem to take my eyes off her eyebrows for some reason grin. Do you remember Angela Rippon on Ernie and Wise - that was the start of newsreaders 'breaking-out'. I think Kenneth Kendall left the news desk and went on to greater(?) things too as did John Suchet - they're all at it!

soop Thu 23-May-13 12:54:10

Have a soft spot for John Suchet, Gally Lovely man. wink

HappyNanna Thu 23-May-13 13:03:30

At one time it used to be Carol Vorderman & Carol Smillie on everything

Tegan Thu 23-May-13 13:10:33

I'd forgotten about Carol Smilie.

dorsetpennt Thu 23-May-13 14:17:05

And that is my point Tegan with overexposure. Forgetting about Carols Vorderman and Smillie as we saw them in everything we got fed up so lets overexpose the next flavour of the month. Just listening to Radio 4 - and an ad for a programme with blooming Clair Balding - again.angry

Mamie Thu 23-May-13 14:25:27

Nicki Chapman. Bad enough on Escape to the Country and Wanted Down Under, but at the Chelsea Flower she just has to be fast-forwarded.

shysal Thu 23-May-13 14:43:46

I like Claire Balding, and the radio 4 programme being advertised was Ramblings, which she has done for some time now, I love it and it suits her character, I can recommend it, I record the series on my TV. I'd rather have her than Julia Bradbury , who is another one who keeps popping up. She was on The Apprentice last night, and came across really badly on 'Come Dine With Me' a while back.

numberplease Thu 23-May-13 16:26:17

Mylene Klass is another who pops up in all sorts of things.
I remember back in the 60s that every time we switched the TV on, there was Millicent Martin, went on for ages, then suddenly, she wasn`t seen anymore.

annodomini Thu 23-May-13 16:34:16

I last saw Millicent Martin as Daphne's mother in a late episode of Frasier.

BAnanas Thu 23-May-13 16:36:31

Kim Kardashian. Who is she? Actually I don't care, can someone just make her go away please!

Ana Thu 23-May-13 16:39:42

Oh yes, anno, I remember that! She had the most appalling accent - worse than Daphne's!

Tegan Thu 23-May-13 17:30:03

And there is, of course, Cheryl Cole...Have to agree about Clare Balding. I've been a fan of hers ever since we used to chat to her at Uttoxeter Races and, being a racing fan I've followed her career for years. But I am getting tired of seeing her popping up all over the place. Having said that, unlike the obvious cases of people doing chat shows [anyone remember the short lived Nigella Lawson one?] whatever Clare turns her hand to she is brilliant at it [just hope she doesn't do a chat show].

Deedaa Thu 23-May-13 21:40:31

I can put up with an awful lot of Clare Balding, she's someone I feel I would really like if I met her (and I loved her book) I used to like Caroline Quentin, but then she did her dreadful series about Cornwall with all the awful people in boutique hotels and second home owners playing at being Cornish (Bitter? Moi?)

Tegan Thu 23-May-13 22:09:14

I watch anything and everything about Cornwall because I used to live there and I love the place, but I watched the first programme she made about Cornwall and never watched it again. As for Clare, I've always felt that she's someone I could sit in a pub with and have a jolly good natter [which is probably the secret of being a god television presenter]. As I've said before, I had a lovely letter from her years ago when she first started presenting the racing on the BBC and she thanked me for thanking her for presenting what had been a very difficult programme that day; what came across was how grateful she was for the input as to how well she was doing her job, as if, right from the start all she wanted to do was perfect her craft.

NannaB Thu 23-May-13 22:27:51

I like Clare Balding, she comes across as very down to earth. My mother would love this topic as she doesn't like ANYONE on TV. smile

Tegan Thu 23-May-13 22:34:03

Clare had a torrid time when the BBC didn't renew her contract and she had to become freelance, but then that's when she branched out into lots of other things.
