stansgran When on the laptop I just open another window to look up unknown words then pop back to the original window I am using. When doing crosswords in the paper I always use the OED or Chambers! A mixed economy!

I love my Kindle for the instant link to a dictionary for any word I don't know. Most likely I'll forget the meaning but it makes me feel I'm improving my mind.

I do the same with Scrabble words the computer comes up with – look up their meanings and promptly forget them – but it helps at the time

Didn't read yesterday's donations to this thread. Have just read them. Well, well. Chips on shoulders comes to mind in some quarters.

Can someone please explain that expression to me? I suppose it really means a chip off a shoulder, or does it mean someone is carrying a heavy log and getting bad-tempered with the world because of it?

Interesting..I hope I need to use that info sometime..I might impress someone We have a lot of dictionaries for various things, e.g. slang, Phrase & Fable etc. DH can read and retain info.. I can read, find info interesting but often fail to retain!
