Hallo Summer Goodbye

When I cut the grass verge outside my house yesterday it was covered with dead brown leaves. Looking up I could see that the leaves on the trees were beginning to go brown round the edges. Today I went up the garden and under the hazel tree, as well as unripe hazelnuts, again there were autumnal dead leaves. Even the sun is taking on a yellow autumn tinge.

The vegetable plot, almost bare until mid-June has bare beds again. The broad beans are over as are the new potatoes, and strawberries and the onions are dug up and drying out.

Summer was lovely while it lasted, but it didn't last long.

Never does where I live. I even got the Woodland Trust to change their perspective about what counts as 'normal' for leaf tint and leaf fall by pointing out that "summer" for plants on a north-east facing slope north of the 60° parallel is short. My earliest record for silver birch leaf tint is the first of July.

It is still mild and pleasantly summery here even though not (never in fact) as hot as southerners are used to, and in spite of leaves beginning to fall.

I've noticed that - about the sun getting Autumn-y! Mind you, it's quite pleasant here today.

Just be quiet - don't mention it!!

A friend said the other day 'Won't you be glad when it's time to draw the curatins and light the fire?' Er, no!!!! sad

I always think autumn starts in mid-August here in the north-east.
It's been distinctly chilly first thing in the morning for the last few days.

Grannyknot Wed 07-Aug-13 20:25:31

I will hold out and wish for an Indian summer. sunshine

merlotgran Wed 07-Aug-13 20:34:25

The hanging baskets are looking weary and it's time to start cutting back the herbaceous plants. I hate winter but autumn on the Fens can be a real Indian summer so I'm hoping it will keep winter at bay for a while.

I don't think I'll mention the W word again until November!

I love the constant change of our seasons and weather.

Stansgran Wed 07-Aug-13 20:56:15

I am sure Autumn started on Tuesday here in Durham. It just felt different after the heavy rain. The seeds are flying and there's condensation on the windows in the morning. Love autumn but what a short summer.

j08 Wed 07-Aug-13 22:01:58

all may not be lost!

vegasmags Wed 07-Aug-13 22:06:36

I've been outside all day, creosoting the fence, and got sunburned on the back of my neck!

Grannyknot Wed 07-Aug-13 22:15:02

Thanks Vegas and J0 smile I also like the changing seasons, but the winters in the Northern Hemisphere are just too long. I have sunshine woven in with my DNA I think.

grannyactivist Wed 07-Aug-13 22:15:53

I lit my woodburner two nights ago. blush And I'm wearing two cardigans and a scarf to keep warm right now!

Grannyknot Wed 07-Aug-13 22:17:17

...or the need for it anyway!

j08 Wed 07-Aug-13 22:19:08

I did think about lighting the fire. shock

merlotgran Wed 07-Aug-13 22:20:45

Blimey, ga, I'm still in a T shirt though I have to say I was shivering in Tesco today. Why are supermarkets so COLD these days?

Galen Wed 07-Aug-13 22:32:23

I'm COLD my boiler has packed up again! It's giving me hot water, but not heating.
Gas engineer, thinks its electrical, so
(With apologies to Flanders and Swann)
'Twas on a Monday morning that the gasman came to call?'
I'm sure somebody can provide a link?

merlotgran Wed 07-Aug-13 22:44:30

here it is.

Galen Wed 07-Aug-13 22:49:55

Thanks! That's how I'm feeling!

This morning the temperature was 7.8C, first time it has been below 15C let alone, 10C for about 2 months.

I have resolutely not complained about the hot summer weather or vocally looked forward to Autumn because summer weather has been notable for its absence over the last few years and short and intense this summer, but, I confess, I am an autumn and winter person, particularly autumn and when I see the yellow sun light and the harvest coming in a little thrill runs through me.

I will now go and order the logs for the wood burner and the sweep will de in on Saturday.

Ella46 Thu 08-Aug-13 07:50:53

I must admit that I'm enjoying the cooler days this week. I love being able to go out in a t shirt and jeans, and feeling pleasantly warm in the sunshine.
That heat was too much for me.

Sunny September mornings are my favourite sunshine

Oldgreymare Thu 08-Aug-13 08:20:26

Please don't say it's over sad

GillieB Thu 08-Aug-13 12:53:08

As I just posted in "Good morning, Thursday", we woke to another lovely morning today and the temperature is about 20 degrees C - great for us in the north east. However, I heard on the radio the other day that parts of the north east went down to 3 degrees C overnight. We always notice the passing year in the conservatory - the quality of the light changes and, yes, it is different now. One of the things we like about Arizona is the incredible quality of light - can't wait to get away in September.

ninathenana Thu 08-Aug-13 14:37:33

Definitely not over in SE. I have been out in sleeveless top this morning and currently have the patio doors wide open.

FlicketyB Thu 08-Aug-13 15:12:00

I live in South Oxfordshire, a few miles north of the M4. Here it is classic September weather, cold mornings, suddenly rising rapidly into the 20s around mid morning and then cooling down just as rapidly in the evening.

I am wearing shprt sleeved and sleeveless tops but a with a cardie over early and late.
