Sorry to have to restart this thread but there's a limit to how many posts there can be on one and it was getting difficult to follow.

Please keep the suggestions coming - they are incredibly helpful. If we could try keep them all on this one thread though that would make it easier to keep track of. There are two other threads for updates and support.

Thank you all.

When, I am on my way back to the UK so I am useless now other than emailing / telephoning, but I do think people read posters on supermarket doors - and everybody shops, men and women alike, don't they, so it would be one more option. Once I am stationary again I will gladly look up addresses to email or telephone shops to ask if they will put up an emailed poster, but the personal approach would be better. Is there anyone physically in the area now do you know?

Grannylin Sun 03-Nov-13 20:39:08

Thanks for all your help so far Icy

Don't know who amongst us is in Haute Savoie, but there are all the local groups that have now been contacted. They have posters and will be networking, too.

Icyalittle Sun 03-Nov-13 20:50:04

Of course, I should have thought that through better, sorry to be dim.

whenim64 Sun 03-Nov-13 21:04:14

Not dim, very supportive - thankyou!

I have seen missing person posters in the major supermarkets in Normandy. Presumably those in the Haute Savoie would also display them. If this hasn't already been undertaken.

*I've pasted a couple of posts from a Swiss expat forum here. There were people out searching the local area yesterday but didn't find anything. They handed out posters etc.
See details below.*

Post 1

I'm just back home from carols area. I'm so sorry to bring no news.

We met folk along the way, dropped off photocopies of her picture and her car and finally did an interview with a tv station from Grenoble.
I feel deflated. We did hours of tracks and roads and looked at every car with hope. I'm so so so sad because its so cold up there

I met a couple of women today, so kind and so lovely who had lost a friend the same way. Now I'm going to pick up my daughter the last leg of my 400k today and have a quiet moment to pray for someone to find her soon.

Post 2

I just came back from Habère-Poche two hours ago.

Met Sapin here.

No sign of Carol or her car. Searching for a missing person in this area is akin to searching for a needle in a haystack: there are too many unpaved steep roads and even more wet muddy trails... a nightmare.

Narrow steep curvy roads with very deep precipices + lack of adequate guard rails + wet leaves covered and poorly maintained pavement make driving in this area very hazardous.

You cannot efficiently search with a car. What we really needed was a cross motorcycle, a horse or a helicopter to search all the ravines.

Due to the very unfriendly terrain, we need at least 40 motivated people, each searching an alloted sector by walking. Based on my calculation, you have an area of roughly 120 sq km (45 sq mi) to search

The cold wet weather (Hudelwetter) made our search even more difficult

We were interviewed by a local French TV in front of Carol's residence, I was so tired and frozen that I could hardly open my mouth and find my words when she asked me whether I'm worried about her disappearance... I just hope I didn't mumble... Sapin answered most questions - in French - and she did great!

Parked my car at St-Gingolph border crossing, entered inside the customs booth and explained the incident to Swiss Grenzwacht/gardes-frontière officers. I also handed them a copy of the flyer. I really appreciated: they took her disappearance very seriously...

These posts really highlight how difficult the search is given the terrain in the area.

Excellent - thanks Honeyball. It's so good to get information about what is actually happening over there.

Glass, your tweets still say 27th September?

Nelliemoser Mon 04-Nov-13 10:08:08

Honeyball It helps us in the UK to know what great efforts have been made and the extent of the problems with regard to the weather and the difficult terrain.
Let your local searchers know how much we appreciate their efforts..

glassortwo Mon 04-Nov-13 10:17:30

mamie oh Bu***r how have I lost a month shock

Flowerofthewest Mon 04-Nov-13 18:06:00

Have just received a message from Carol's grandson-in-law who has asked for posters to still be shared, just not the inappropriate pictures of Carol's car etc. I have now posted the poster from her page.

Daisyanswerdo Mon 04-Nov-13 22:12:07

Is the terrain suitable for enlisting the help of a tracker dog? (Apologies if this has already been excluded.)

whenim64 Mon 04-Nov-13 22:34:58

Yes, Daisy

MUMSNET THREAD IS HERE

I'm linking it just in case you need help - anything.
another person also offered to translate in French, if that is still needed.

we were bumping the last threads to raise awareness, asking people for sharing details on facebook, Twitter etc.
now this third thread has been sticked, we use it to share info, suggestions and support, while waiting & hoping.

let us know what we can do for Carol, we'll do what we can.

Isn't it great to see gransnet and mumsnet united in support and positive thoughts for Greatnan and her family.
