I've only recently found Gransnet, but I think you may already have saved my life. I've spent the last couple of days reading through many, many threads and discovered that there are some very wise and warm Gransnetters out there who really do seem to listen and care. And although I haven't really posted anything about myself, I'm beginning to feel that, if I need an ear - which I sometimes do - you're there with your wisdom and warmth. Knowing that has chased away some dark clouds. So thank you.

Dragonfly I just looked at your profile; I bought "The Herb of Grace" to re read a few months ago. It used to be one of my favourite books. I haven't read any more by Elizabeth Goudge.

Welcome Dragonfly, I too love Elizabeth Goudge, The Dean's Watch is one of my favourites, but there is so much gentle wisdom in her writing that all of her books bring insight and solace.

It's 50-odd years since I read anything by Elizabeth Goudge. As well as Georgette Heyer, she was serialised in the Woman's Journal which was my Mum's favourite and always passed on to me when she had devoured it. I still have my copy of The Little White Horse which I keep intending to pass on to my GD.

My copy of LWH has come back to me, along with all my other Elizabeth Goudge books, having been pilfered by my eldest daughter over the years. It was her favourite. When she died my son-in-law gave me 'my' books back as I'd had them all from childhood. She'd also managed to relocate some of my Georgette Heyer books to her house too! The Child From the Sea is perhaps my favourite EG, and These Old Shades is the GH book we both loved most.

Hello Dragonfly. This is turning into an Elizabeth Goudge appreciation. My books came from my great aunts when they died many years ago and I always read The Dean's Watch just before Christmas, it somehow makes me want to be a better person!
They also had all the Georgette Heyers and I've re-read them many times over the years.
I hope the bad times are behind you and send you very best wishes for a peaceful 2014.

Did someone say Elizabeth Goudge? Did she write 'The White Witch'? That rings a bell from long ago....

Ariadne Mon 30-Dec-13 15:58:40

Yes, Rowantree she did!

One of the nice things about GN, is that it reminds you of all sorts of things that you thought you'd forgotten about.

Thanks for your kind wishes, nannyfran. It's proof, isn't it, that good books stand the test of time, - re-read, remembered, old friends really.

Another person to welcome - whoopee doo! Hello grandma60, really nice to meet you as well. Dragonfly1, thank you so much for asking, he's home and considerably better, coughing a lot but eating better. What a to-do, much shared anxiety.

You feel so helpless when they're poorly, I'm glad he's on the mend. smile
