One of only two areas of the UK still getting European funding Cornwall is in dire straits, no increase in house prices here, unless its a house that will be bought by incomers, average wages is £14.300 no jobs for the young. As far as I am concerned anything that helps the dire straits has to be good, it even extends to the schools, our children receive almost half the funding received by children in Hackney, £8595 against £4396. How is that justified?

When I lived there it was the second generation people that described visitors as emmets and I do wonder how many people in Cornwall these days can trace their ancestry back for hundreds of years? Having said that, I love the place with a passion and am desperate to go back there and visit my old haunts [ie The Cobweb and The Wellington ]. Nowhere gives me a sense of the past the way that Cornwall does, with it's little coves and waves crashing against the cliffs. I can close my eyes and be there now.

I love Cornwall, despite the fact that we lived in neighbouring Devon for years and DH is a Devon boy. I wanted to visit an old pub that my dad used to visit probably nearly 100 years ago when he first joined the RN, and found it to be a trendy place, full of weekenders from London and with prices to match.

Some Cornish villages are practically deserted in the winter and in the week, as many of the cottages have been bought as holiday homes and have subsequently priced out young locals.

Reviving old languages is, I think, a good thing, but can go too far. How long before every Cornish school child has compulsory lessons in Cornish at great expense to the taxpayer? As a voluntary exercise, self-funded, I think it is a good idea - but of course so much of modern Cornish will be someone's idea of what it should be.

The best clotted cream is from Devon - am I allowed to name it? I will put it on another post in case it gets deleted.

There was a movement not so long ago for an independent Monmouthshire.

Getting back to Cornwall (I wish), there is a double page spread in an unmentionable newspaper today of homes sold in Britain in one day for £1 million and over.

One of them is in St Mawes, I think it is one that was proposed a few years ago when DH and I visited there. A perfectly nice bungalow was being demolished and this very expensive house was going to be built on the prime spot. It has just sold for £2.9million. A snip!
