How is it 90% of people have been suckered into wearing tight blue cotton leg coverings... Jeans, jeggings - whatever you call 'em - cold and unflattering on everybody. I really do not want to see the absolute outline of anyone in public. I wear windproof craghoppers most of the time when others would choose jeans. And leggings are next thing to underwear - OK at home with close family or in a gym. As for the leg coverings with deliberate rips - don't get me started.

One poster commented on mutton dressed as lamb. Has this concept disappeared? Or has the shelf-life of lambs extended? Or is it that gransnetter wearers of ripped jeans and shoulderless sweaters don't happen to have teenage GDs?

M0nica Sun 12-Nov-17 12:20:20

I am not sure about ripped jeans but 10 year old DGD, 48 year old DDiL and me (74) can frequently be seen in very similar black jeggings, layered tops and boots, although I wear elegant leather boots with a thick 2 inch heel and they wear Doc Martins

Eloethan Sun 12-Nov-17 12:38:14

I think they look quite nice with longish, flowing tops. I'm too short I think to look elegant in that sort of thing (or in anything really).

My view is that if someone feels comfortable and at ease in what they're wearing then that's the main thing. I may think it unflattering but then perhaps things I wear appear unflattering to other people.

Diddy1 Sun 12-Nov-17 12:48:32

Like a few people who didnt know what Craghoppers are. I am confused as to the difference between jeggings and leggings, I hate those terribly tight fitting things that show off every bump on people who really shouldnt wear them, fashion or not, have some pride!

Nandalot Sun 12-Nov-17 12:51:34

I would love to wear leggings or jogging but having the most peculiar shaped legs, I won’t go into detail, I stick to straight jeans or trousers, usually with long tunic tops.

Misha14 Sun 12-Nov-17 13:02:30

Where do you get fur lined leggings?

GoldenAge Sun 12-Nov-17 13:26:04

Myself, I find denim cold even with thermal leggings underneath but it's all a question of personal taste surely. What I do find unacceptable, however, is the trend of wearing jeans below the hips so that in guys it's the underpants that are on show and in women, the thong!! As far as rips and tears are concerned, these are simply another fashion statement and again personal choice. I do sincerely hope that these latter two fashions are not allowed in the workplace though.

Misha14
There are loads on line. Start with eBay.
I bought mine in TKmax.

pollyperkins Sun 12-Nov-17 13:41:32

Correct me if Im wrong but I think leggings are like thick tights without feet and jeggings are a cross between leggings and jeans ie leggings made of stretchy denim type material.
I think either are unflattering on older women unless they tall and slim and have good legs! Although I can see that tunic style top covering the backside over leggings is better than a short top.
I think charging a small fortune for preripped jeans is just ridiculous and tgey look awful. I'm probably old fashioned!

loopyloo Sun 12-Nov-17 13:44:57

Fur lined leggings! Yes please who sells them ?

Ailsa43 Sun 12-Nov-17 13:49:51

Sorry Craighopper trousers on women are awful.... they are not in the least attractive .

I wear skinny jeans and tuck them into knee high boots...usually beige or tan or black... if I wear legging it's usually thick leggings under a tunic top..or under normal straight jeans for warmth..

Sorry OP...but you say 90% have been suckered , I think it may be that 10 % haven't yet discovered the benefits and smartness of skinny jeans and leggings.. ( except of course on incredible overweight people..but then that goes for any kind of tight clothing)

marionk Sun 12-Nov-17 13:57:46

Skinnys and jogging for me too, with tunics, dresses or long jumpers, tucked in boots - very cosy! Hate the ‘cold shoilder’ look, ripped jeans (remember them from the first time round!) and the current trend for flounces and frills on everything! How do they cope with those awful flounced sleeves?

willa45 Sun 12-Nov-17 13:58:22

Wear whatever makes you happy. Everyone has the right to dress as they please and not worry about pleasing others. Whether it's flattering, comfortable, baggy or beautiful, if you like it (and as long as you don't get arrested), by all means wear it! smile

marionk Sun 12-Nov-17 13:59:39

Jeggings even!!

Jalima1108 Sun 12-Nov-17 14:39:05

Pollyperkins so relieved to read your post, which also reminded me that I have a couple of pairs of (straight-legged) cord trousers tucked away at the back of the wardrobe somewhere.

Wear whatever makes you happy Absolutely!
And why wear the same as everyone else? I had enough of uniforms at school.

lovebeigecardigans1955 Sun 12-Nov-17 14:43:39

I like jeggings as I think they're warmer than baggier trousers. They're not as tight as the leggings which I wore with chunky jumpers in um, the 70s?
I wonder how carefully you have to thread your feet into those silly very ripped jeans without getting your toes caught between the threads?
You know those denim jackets ('western?') - I once saw a young lady wearing one of these and the back central panel was more ripped than fabric. Drafty or what? The designers must be laughing all the way to the bank.

shysal Sun 12-Nov-17 15:09:54

My legs are too chunky and short to wear l/jeggings. I wear straight leg jeans or joggers with long tops.
One item of clothing that I wouldn't wear is the fleece jacket with giant animal prints. I think they are hideous! They seem to be very popular in my area for wearing to the supermarket.

garnet25 Sun 12-Nov-17 15:22:25

Jeggings and leggings for me every time, with tunics or long jumpers. I mainly love them as they are so easy to move in and so versatile. For Gardening I throw on an old pair of cords over the top which gives a warm and practicle combination. I'm 71 and still happy wearing my jeggings out and about though allways with long tops.

NannyKasey Sun 12-Nov-17 15:43:16

Nothing wrong with jeggings, leggings or skinny jeans! I've been wearing them all for years, it's mainly leggings or jeggings now though. At the moment, I'm wearing blue jean leggings from Primark, a Salt Rock t-shirt and an electric pink boucle zip up cardi that I've had for so long that I've forgotten where I got it from.

robbienut Sun 12-Nov-17 15:59:11

I wear what I find comfortable/warm and that is not jeans or leggings. I prefer to wear skirts and dresses anyway so I think I'm in the minority lol

Greyduster Sun 12-Nov-17 16:15:48

I wear slim fit jeans with ankle boots, but so far have shied away from jeggings and very tight jeans, although last year I tried on a pair of very slim cotton trousers with turnups and decided they weren’t for me. I tried them again this year, bought them and absolutely love them. I have to come round to things being a good idea gradually! Perhaps next year will be the year of the very tight jeans. Who knows! They’ll probably have gone out of fashion by then - I have been way behind the curve most of my life!

singingnutty Sun 12-Nov-17 16:36:31

I can't wear very tight jeans as I have thunder thighs and would look hideous. However I have found a couple of pairs of jeggings which I wear with long tops or tunics and find that comfortable. Absolutely can't tolerate ripped knees on anyone over 30! As for the tops with holes at the shoulders, someone told me they were designed for people to show off their tattoos. Don't get me started on that!

GrammaH Sun 12-Nov-17 16:41:20

Well sandelf, I see you've appointed yourself the dictator of what is acceptable and what isn't where trouser fashions are concerned. I never used to wear trousers at all until I lost weight & dropped from a size 16 to a size 12 and I have to say that I enjoy showing my legs off and wear both skinny jeans & jeggings with knee high boots on a regular basis. They make me feel feminine & attractive, my husband loves them & if you've got it, flaunt it! You can keep your Craghoppers - serviceable, boring & no doubt extremely good in bad weather but how drab!! I'll wear what I want thanks , even if I am one of the 90% !! Surely that's a bit high....!! I'm with you on the ripped trousers though....

Grandma70s Sun 12-Nov-17 17:13:01

From what I see out and about, I’ve come to the conclusion that many women who wear tight jeans/jeggings/leggings have never seen their rear view in a long mirror. Ogden Nash got it right (best read in an American accent):

Sure, deck your lower limbs in pants,
Yours are the limbs, my sweeting.
You look divine as you advance;
Have you seen yourself retreating?

Tight tee shirts on less than perfect figures (male ot female) are a dislike of mine, as well. You don't even need a long mirror to check what they look like.

HeyHo Sun 12-Nov-17 17:55:41

Each to their own, and each to their own budget too......
I have experienced a severe downturn in income over the last 20 years - and I mean severe.
I have not been in a clothes shop in all that time, all my clothes are from charity shops or ebay, and I have to make the most of what I can afford, and that is what I do!!
I like my own style, and to be honest, only see fashions on TV as I live in a fairly remote area......
