Do you hold many secrets, either about yourself or somebody else?

How long have you kept this secret, and what would be the consequences if it ever came out?

P.S. what is it? grin (not really)

Nannan2 Thu 13-Feb-20 12:02:57

Nannan2 Thu 13-Feb-20 12:03:20

Mimibunz Thu 13-Feb-20 12:06:49

My DH best friend tried it on a couple of times when he was drunk. I will never say a word.

Flakesdayout Thu 13-Feb-20 12:11:14

I have a couple of secrets of my own which I would never tell although they are long gone in the past. If anyone tells me anything and it is confidential I never tell.

Nannan2 Thu 13-Feb-20 12:12:09

Then dont tell it Missadventure,if it helps no one hmm if you feel burdened by it,write it down,THEN BURN IT! You may feel better then,so just forget it..i always keep secrets, some of my friends had told me secrets, they've taken them to their grave,so i wont be spilling them either.. my AC sometimes tell me stuff about their siblings, and im not even tempted to pass them on..i just pretend its 'news' to me when the sibling gets around to telling me! smile

I just forget what people tell me! Menopausal brain fog I think?

I was born in England but grew up in South Africa. At the age of 20 I was about to set sail to England and would stay in London with a relative, when my father took me aside and told me that my mother's family were all very nice except for one of her brothers. This man was a paedophile and had spent time in prison for that. Despite that he had a job as a caretaker in a school. Nobody from the family ever told the school. They were all keeping a family secret. I met my
uncle. He was obviously very weird.

Nannan2 Thu 13-Feb-20 12:25:50

Oh thats such a shame Jillybird, your poor mum never knowing all that,if you'd both mentioned it years ago you could have helped her to find them sooner and known the truth,aw thats so sadsad

I kept secret the fact that I had been diagnosed with a bladder tumour.
My son - who had a cancer diagnosis himself at age 24 was planning his wedding and I didn't want to spoil this for him. Also I had not long started to care for his first baby ( our first grandchild). Several months passed before I had the tumour removed & all is well. Three weeks ago I had my post-surgery follow-up appointment to which my son accompanied me. By that stage the family knew I had had a 'cyst removed so when the doctor told us that yes I had had a cancerous tumour removed & that it was low-grade with little chance of recurring, he also old us that I was now cancer-free.
Nobody wants to have to tell their lived ones that they've had a cancer diagnosis but by keeping it to myself it meant that the day they heard that news was also the day they heard I was cancer-free.
It was a secret worth keeping.
I also found it easier to get through the waiting months because nobody else was aware so there were no queries about my health. I was able to concentrate on the wedding plans & enjoying my beautiful grandsons first summer.
My DDIL asked him recently why I had not told even one close friend.
I told her what I firmly believe to be true - if you want to keep a secret tell no-one flowers

gagsville Thu 13-Feb-20 12:30:02

I don't envy you that one 3nanny6. The only way this could come out otherwise is if the children ever need a transplant f any sort. Am I wrong?

Riggie Thu 13-Feb-20 12:31:17

Jillybird. Something similar in our family - except the mother lied on the birth certificate too saying she was a spinster when she was married and the father unknown. She and her husband stayed together. So now wondering if she had an affair or if maybe my relative was her grandchild and she lied about everything!! We have no idea if my relative knew they had 7 older siblings or what they knew. Certainly the relatives who brought my relative up have kept the story quiet too.

grandtanteJE65 Thu 13-Feb-20 12:34:24

In my professional life I often knew things about people that I had to keep to myself.

This has influenced my private life, so I have no difficulty keeping secrets if people confide in me.

lovebeigecardigans1955 Thu 13-Feb-20 12:43:40

Late MIL had an 'accident' which involved partial loss of sight in one eye - she'd never say how it happened as she said that someone would get into trouble. No matter how gently or who approached the subject she took that secret to the grave.

They say you want to keep a secret you should keep it to yourself.

3nanny6 Thu 13-Feb-20 12:46:46

Gagsville yes it is a tricky situation. The fact is that all our older generation have all died. One of my cousins said that the cousin should tell her children the true story but her and her husband are adamant they will never be told any details, I stay right out of it all and have nothing to say within the family setting about any of it, it is something my cousin may take to the grave.

Bobdoesit Thu 13-Feb-20 12:55:31

I do, and it concerns a neighbour so I'm staying tight-lipped. I do wish people would not tell me their guilty secrets because now I feel guilty too.

Jishere Thu 13-Feb-20 13:09:12

I have many secrets some dark one sadly true but being adopted they remain with me. I guess because of that constant fear of rejection rather than acceptance. I have had counselling so guess not a total secret and have written a book which seemed therapeutic.

H1954 Thu 13-Feb-20 13:18:31

Should I tell my OH (we have only been together a short time) that his brother made a very, very drunken pass at me last year! He is a very unattractive drunk and even when he's sober he makes me feel uncomfortable! He's in another relationship now as, not surprisingly, his marriage broke down!

Speldnan Thu 13-Feb-20 13:20:24

Too many, past and present mostly my own which can’t be told as they affect other people ?

Ohmother Thu 13-Feb-20 13:32:13

I have to keep secrets in my line of work. I’m not telling you what that is either! ?

MissAdventure Thu 13-Feb-20 13:35:45

I don't feel burdened by it Nannan, and there is never a chance I would tell.

TATT Thu 13-Feb-20 13:37:14

Yes. If one of my children knew what the other knows there would be major ructions.

Ellie Anne Thu 13-Feb-20 14:10:02

Yes a friend told me something years ago that could cause a lot of trouble in her family. I’ve never told anyone.

janeayressister Thu 13-Feb-20 14:23:19

I have a terrible secret that I will never and cannot ever tell anyone. It weighs down my heart terribly. I cry to myself about it, but have to just cheer up and go on.
