Anyone remember their school motto? Ours was 'Gentleness and Justice'. Not sure I lived up to that.

My secondary modern school motto was - and still is, although now a comp high- Facta Non Verba - Deeds Not Words. Another good one I think.

My school was not posh enough to have one!

I attended two secondary schools.
Sic Itur Ad Astra Reach for the stars.
Qui Patitur Vincit. He who endures win

merlotgran

We had a school song 'Forty Years On,' which we nicked from Harrow School.

These days the last verse brings tears to my eyes.

Just looked this up Merlotgran.

Can see why it makes you tearful.

My school motto was Integer Vitae which means something like “ a wholesome life”.
It was an inner city secondary and not at all posh.

Primary school 'Per ardua ad astra' - through striving we reach the stars. Not sure my secondary school had one, but the school song was 'He who would valiant be', which seemed a bit strange for a girl's school!

To Thine own self be True, not sure about the Latin though.

In fact very surprised we had one, it was a pretty rough, tough, secondary modern.

I see what you mean about the last verse of Forty Years On. ?

Sola Nobilitat Virtus - virtue alone ennobles. Came to me right away although I left in 1970 - 50 years ago! ?

In loco parentis

The school had been founded in Manchester in 1855 to feed, clothe and educate the orphaned children of warehousemen and clerks.

Spes audacem adjuvat - hope favours the bold. Obviously a sick joke as any girl who was "bold" was well and truly squashed back into place. Ghastly place.

Shortlegs Sun 27-Sept-20 09:50:26

Non Nobis Solum (Not unto us alone). Why can I still remember that 50 odd years after leaving? God, I hated school. Best years of your life? Pah!

Americanpie Sun 27-Sept-20 09:50:45

My school motto was "Veritas ", truth. The school song started with the line, "Founded on truth our school endures". I can still remember the tune.

Cruci dum spiro fido - While I live I trust in the cross. Great predictive text gave me crucial dump spirometry fido, on first go!

Irenelily Sun 27-Sept-20 09:57:36

- and the school song was “Who would true valour see“

LyWa Sun 27-Sept-20 09:58:07

My girls grammar school motto was ‘Onwards and upwards‘, I have found myself saying it at different times in my life.

Nemo me impune lacessite
Hamilton Academy
It translates to “no one may harm me with impunity” which we loved as to us it meant “do anything to harm me and I will get you back”.
