How do you feel about Winter?

I have a friend who begins to lament the approach of winter as soon as the nights begin to get longer and whose mood is low during much of the winter months. Yet I also know people who are equally cheerful winter and summer - and I recently saw an article about this which I found very interesting. One of the things they did was to talk to Norwegians who live within the Arctic Circle - they have winter days when there are only 2 or 3 hours - or fewer still - of pale sunlight. Many of them love winter! It turns out that this is largely to do with how they think about it - here are some examples of questions they were asked:

Which of the following statements best reflects your attitude to winter?

*There are many things to enjoy about the winter
*I love the cosiness of the winter months
*Winter brings many wonderful seasonal changes

Or

*Winter is boring
*Winter is a limiting time of year
*There are many things to dislike about winter

No surprises that the people who agreed with the positive statements about winter were also found to be happier and more cheerful. And of course, it isn't only our attitude to winter which affects our mood and feelings - lots of things can look different if we find another way to look at them. I turned around a fear of flying by changing how I thought about it - and it wasn't as hard as you might think, once I allowed myself to see the 'story' I was telling myself. I wonder how many gransnetters have found that changing the 'story' they tell themselves about something changes how they feel?

Grannybags

I wouldn't mind winter if it didn't have Christmas in it!

I really don't enjoy Christmas but love cold crispy sunny winter days.

A kindred spirit.

I am normally happy whatever the season. I lived in the tropics and there was little difference throughout the year. It did get boring and I longed for a change.
This year is different. All the the things that make winter enjoyable are off the cards. (Friends get togethers, theatre visits, sunshine holidays etc.).
It is going to be a very long winter.

Autumn and Spring are my favourites
Winter comes next for lots of previously mentioned things like the food, the cosy feeling of hunkering down in bad weather, crisp and frosty walks .Prefer winter clothes as well. Not a big fan of all the Xmas hype though and weird I know love January when it's quiet reflective and a new beginning.
Least favourite is Summer.Hate unbearably hot days and muggy nights. And either like that or unseasonably cold and wet lately.
Actually so grateful to live somewhere with seasons and a variety of weather.

I appreciate the changing of the seasons and Winter is a time of winding down. I like to think that Mother Nature is resting before pushing up beautiful Spring bulbs, etc. Each season has good and bad.

Well not sure if I have the timing right, but I have planted tulips, daffs, crocus, and many other bulbs. So I have something to look forward to after cold, dreary and wet winter ahead of us.

As janeainsworth said, you would miss all the seasons if you didn’t have them. I relish the time when all the flies go to where flies go in the winter. I can cope with anything after that!

I hate winter - having to close curtains in the daytime. Don't like cold weather. I use an electric wheelchair when going to town and although I'm not out for long ,my legs get very cold in the chair.

I dont mind the cold but the dark mornings and evenings are depressing
This winter may feel even longer with limits on most activities
Roll on spring

Must admit to detesting winter. Hate the short daylight hours and long dark nights. I coped better when I worked even though it meant going out before it was light in the morning. At least then the office was well lit, saw and spoke to lots of people.

Have the instincts of those creatures that go into hibernation.. I can normally just about get through to christmas - January and February are my most hated months and I have always said that anything bad in my life is likely to happen then. I try to find an indoor job to keep me somewhat occupied during those weeks.

When I was young I used to fantasise about being able to take a long cruise to Australia every October, to live there until the following March and then do a further sea trip back to England. So, two lovely fortnight holidays each year and no winter. Never ever happened!!!!

I have to confess I hate Winter and normally take some time off to go somewhere sunny where I meet up with friends from all over the world. Sadly probably not going to happen this year so will just have to put up with it. I have stocked up in three months worth of vitamin D instead!

Love the cozy nights, log fire burning cozy lamps. Walking the dog in crisp cold mornings all wrapped up. Wet weather proof clothing, change in colours of tress leaves. Make most of daylight up out early.

My favourite season is the Autumn with all the colours of the trees and a nip in the air, but winter doesn't really bother me. I love a frosty morning, taking the dog a long walk, all wrapped up in cosy hats & scarves. If it pours all day that's a different matter and that happens a lot here in N.Ireland! ( bucketing down today). Lighting the fire in the evenings, a big cuppa and hopefully something decent on the telly or just sitting reading a good book.

Nothing I like about winter ,

I love the changing of the seasons in the UK. Think autumn is my favourite. But I like winter. I like wrapping up and going for a walk, provided its not raining. And coming back to a warm house, cup of tea and slice of cake. I like watching stormy weather and love snow. I like the run up to Christmas. And the anticipation of a New Year (hopefully a better one) and the promise of spring. Not saying I don't get fed up occasionally of wet dreary weather, but I make the most of the positives and tolerate the negatives.

I don’t dislike any season what I do dislike are dangerous driving conditions which can happen in any season

harrysgran Sun 04-Oct-20 10:58:34

I don't like winter I hate travelling to and from work often in the dark and I'm nervous when driving in frosty weather the summer months are so much less stressful and enjoyable for me

Leah50 Sun 04-Oct-20 10:58:41

I don't like winter, getting soaked when I go shopping & walk the grandkids home from school, (takes me ages to feel warm & dry). The fear of slipping on ice, rural bus service doesn't arrive, our old house doesn't have central heating so is frequently cold. Dark mornings, curtains closed before tea-time. Garden wet & boring....I'm looking forward to next spring.

I love the sun and light so Winter is a bit of a bind for me. But most of all I hate the dreary, grey, rainy days and especially if it's windy too.

Winter used to be my favourite season. When it became too mild in Kent we moved up to the Scottish Highlands searching for winter and snow.
The first couple of years gave us the excitement of using snow chains, seeing the first frosting on the mountains and actually building a snowman to welcome in Christmas Day.
Last year and the one before were mainly wet and relatively mild, the ski resorts struggled and the temperature rarely dipped below freezing.
I am grateful that we experienced one last winter, we are returning to Kent and don’t expect to see another one. ?

I love winter ....as long as I’m wrapped up I will walk anywhere....but I dread the fuel bills as I’m on a restricted income. So I stay out of the house and walk as often as possible ...or go to my son in laws and do bit housework and feed cat in there, in return for his warm home....sometimes I’ll even prepare a meal for him as he gets home late. I enjoy it and keep warm at same time. It’s symbiotic!

Gingergirl Sun 04-Oct-20 11:20:34

Our perception is all important. And I’d go as far to say that it then influences are physical health.

Kim19 Sun 04-Oct-20 11:23:23

Huge ugh to winter from me. Can't think of one redeeming feature. However, I plan to urge it along with lots of lovely long lunches. Covid has made this a challenge but my bigger groups have decided to do lots of pairings in order to combat this awfulness. The two household rule limits but doesn't stop us..... until it changes?!!

Shakespeare’s poem just sums up winter for me.I remember breaking off long icicles and eating them like lollies.
When icicles hang by the wall,
And Dick the shepherd blows his nail,
And Tom bears logs into the hall,
And milk comes frozen home in pail,
When blood is nipped and ways be foul,
Then nightly sings the staring owl,
Tu whit tu who,
A merry note,
While greasy Joan doth keel the pot.
The only draw back I find is I don’t drive at night. But a good excuse to light the fire and snuggle down. Every season has its blessings.

henetha Sun 04-Oct-20 11:25:39

Mixed feelings really. I like the changing seasons. I'm fine when winter sets in, but by January I've had enough and long for spring to arrive.

crazygranny Sun 04-Oct-20 11:26:06

Well done for conquering the fear of flying! I have permanent money problems and used to worry all the time about the future. Like you, I turned this around by realising the thing I feared was the possibly dreadful future I was imagining rather than the wonderful and happy present. I was more afraid of a self made projection than the happy reality of my life.
PS Winter is wonderful!
