They say a picture paints a thousand words and there have been some lovely photos on GN recently. I am a visual person and, especially at this time, pictures cheer me up. Autumn scenes, people's gardens, cake baking, craftwork, pets, clothes we fancy buying etc. Even stock images of Boris, royalty etc.
What is the general feeling? Are they superfluous or do they add another dimension? Are we "allowed" to just drop them into a non photographic thread?

Didn’t know that! Very apt, I’d say Elliane!

grannyqueenie Tue 20-Oct-20 16:32:45

I never knew those were edible greyduster, they pop up in our garden too!

baubles Tue 20-Oct-20 16:52:13

I’ve really enjoyed looking at everyone’s fabulous photos, thank you all. smile

Greyduster Tue 20-Oct-20 16:58:01

It says they are edible in my pocket guide to mushrooms and toadstools “must be eaten young. Good salty flavour.” So, whose going first, GQ? You or me??

Greyduster Tue 20-Oct-20 17:07:24

Callistemon I have been known to offer fly agaric (the red ones with the white spots) on buttered toast to DH for a breakfast treat, but he is not as green as he is cabbage looking!

Scribbles Tue 20-Oct-20 17:31:20

He might well be very green indeed if he did eat them, Greyduster

grannyqueenie Tue 20-Oct-20 18:28:00

After you with the condiments, grey!!

Freddie Mercury said "if you want peace of mind come to Montreux" apparently Scribbles.

I wonder if Freddie ate mushrooms too?

On a family walk last Saturday, on our local moors...we came across two huge clumps of these crocus..

farview Tue 20-Oct-20 19:05:07

A better view of the wild crocus ..

Scribbles Tue 20-Oct-20 21:33:26

Ellianne, I wasn't there very long but I can see how it could have that effect on a person. Leaving aside the lakeside location and spectacular surrounding scenery, there is something strangely reassuring about the calmly efficient way everything in Switzerland just seems to work.

Thank you! We need to flex our creative muscles more often.

The Acers in our local arboretum continue to glow smile

I've only seen a couple of those once, in our local woods when other granny and I were taking the DGC for a walk. Of course, they were young enough then to believe in fairies too (well, one still does).
We have some lovely clean, white fungus on the lawn now, they look like mushrooms but I'm not going to pick them and cook them.

Amazing Lisagran. Especially on a wet grey day here.

Greyduster Wed 21-Oct-20 10:19:58

Aren’t acers a glory, Lisagran? Farview I’ve never seen wild crocuses; that’s a first for me. Great thread this!

Lisagran Wed 21-Oct-20 10:30:41

I think the Autumn crocuses / crocii are called Colchicums? The flowers come up first, before leaves

Ellianne Wed 21-Oct-20 13:08:23

There's always one in every family! Has to find a swamp. Now for a hose off.

annodomini Wed 21-Oct-20 13:45:55

My big acer is bright scarlet and the little 'weeping' acer is gold. Sadly, gales are forecast and the lovely leaves will carpet the garden. Autumn crocuses are chicken and egg. What comes first, the flowers or the leaves? The leaves come in the summer in my garden and really look rather unsightly. The flowers arrived just in time to be beaten down by the autumn rain!

farview Wed 21-Oct-20 13:51:25

Wonderful photo Ellianne...?
Greyduster..a first for me also...my son was wondering re Saffron!?

Greyduster Wed 21-Oct-20 15:35:25

farview as far as I can gather, if it’s colchicum autumnale, or meadow saffron, it’s highly poisonous?. A female murderer in the 19th century poisoned several victims with it. The saffron crocus is a different plant.

grannyqueenie Wed 21-Oct-20 16:02:41

greyduster should we be suspicious of your knowledge of poisonous substances, is Mr Duster at serious risk here?!!

Marvellous photo there Ellianne, some dogs just a have nose for the muddiest spot!

Really enjoying this thread and all the beautiful images. Here are some of our walk yesterday, a much brighter day than expected. Shame about today ?

farview Wed 21-Oct-20 18:27:02

Greyduster..oh heck?
