Another vacuous thread! Tenuous Claims to Fame

Diana Dors has been mentioned more than once on this thread, so I’ll mention that in about 1952 when I was 12 I had a penfriend in Swindon who went to the same school Diana Dors had been to.

I had afternoon tea with Delia Smith and her grouchy husband at a friend’s house. She was electioneering.

Ken Russell, the director, was filming a documentary about dancing in 1959. Our school had ballroom dancing on the curriculum and he filmed myself and our dance teacher dancing the tango. A few year's ago, I was watching 'Dance Britannia' on TV and there we were! There was also a dance sequence performed by Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. I will die happy...

I lived on the farm the BBC used to film Cold Comfort Farm in the sixties, met Alistair Simm and Sarah Baddel, also supplied the tea and use of our downstairs loo.

I used to have a friend who told me that she once touched David Essex’s leg during a concert he was performing in at The Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford on Avon in the 70s. The theatre has been replaced now and I have lost touch with that friend - last remembered conversation was me promising to give her a ring back when I had finished having a bath (..... sorry Karen - are you out there?).

Margaret Thatcher(PM at time) came to look round the government stately home I worked in and I shook her hand. Dennis was with her and tried to chivvy her along the line but she was not going to have any of that. She was much smaller than I imagined and her hair a better colour. Skirt of her blue costume was not pressed and I assumed that was because it could be taken up and down according to fashion. We then had tea and cake. A lot of us I will add.

Cilla’s auntie was a waitress at the local golf club.

When I was little, I gave a bouquet of flowers to the Lord Mayor of London’s wife, have been in a production on the Royal Albert floor three consecutive years. Later I got Herman’s autograph, and saw Jimmy Hendrix play at the Beeb. Even later had in one of my groups, one of Mitterrand’s security men (with his gun). More recently I caused an English law’s subsection to be added.

Me & my exH were extras when Ken Russell was filming Tommy in Portsmouth. His wife Shirley was wardrobe mistress and did my hair. We were in a scene at Hilsea Lido with Oliver Read and Ann-Margret and Oliver Read was leading a fitness session round the pool.

When the film came out I wasn't in any of the shots but my ex was!

My middle brother won a Bonny Baby competition and Vera Lynn gave him a kiss (and half of my Mum’s friends, who encouraged her to enter him, sent her to Coventry).

My bestie used to run a hotel on the Mull of Kintyre where the McCartneys were regular dropper-inners.

My DH was a lighting director with the BBC and worked with a lot of famous people back in the late 60s/70s. Notably he loathed Bruce Forsyth, said he was an arrogant rhymes with banker. But the Two Ronnies were lovely, as were Morcambe and Wise.

My only claim to fame is that the vet who speyed my cat in 1973 reached the second round of Mastermind ... but I expect that doesn't count.

Ashcombe I used to live near Shugborough too! The village of Milford. One day I was taking my baby for a walk and met Patrick Lichfield in the lane. He told me he was just about to go to Mick Jagger's wedding (to Bianca). Didnt he have a lovely speaking voice?!

Not Milford but my friends from school lived in Walton and Brocton. We used to spend a lot if time on The Chase.

My brother was in hospital recently and got chatting to a fellow patient who turned out to be the guy who invented the slogan 'you can do it when you B&Q it'.

Michael Parkinson’s son went to the college I went to the year after I left. And my auntie once met a famous footballer and told him that her niece (me!) had been madly in love with him as a teenager 20 years before.

My son met Wayne Rooney at a business function and Coleen took a picture of them together, with son's phone.
