Biba I find myself asking the same question. I'm puzzled. What is hypocritical about NS having grandparents from Sunderland??

As I have stated before, I'm not a great fan, but she is decisive and trying to do her best for the people of Scotland. I would have her over that buffoon Boris any day.
Many countries others have closed their borders to try and protect the population.

No-one should be thinking of travelling to Scotland for a holiday at present. I can't even travel ten minutes to my daughter's because it's in the next county! If it will slow down the transmission, I'm all for it.

Why would you want to go to Scotland in the middle of a pandemic. Septimia ? You would either pick up the virus from the natives or carry it to them from your home town, neither of them exactly neighbourly things to do. Wait until it is over and travel resumes again, then you can go - and be perfectly welcome! No-one has EVER said that English tourists are unwelcome.

And what is wrong with having grandparents from Sunderland? You would be amazed at how many Scots (me, for instance) have ancestors who were born elsewhere - just like the English, actually. It doesn't stop them being very fond of the place they live now. Perhaps those ancestors began by taking holidays in Scotland and liked it so much they decided to stay?

I think the comment about Sturgeons grandparents coming from England mean that they were surprised at how ‘new’ she is to Scotland.With her rhetoric you could be forgiven for thinking she had ancestors going back to when Robert The Bruce was a lad.

Lots of NEW Scots are pro Indy* Lemongrove*,they see the lack of democracy in the present set up and think we could do much better ourselves ...and her other GP's may well have long roots here .Who knows ? I watched a programme fromRothesay the other night and some Syrian refugees were interviewd ..they regard Scotland as home,were welcomed,helped to settle and some have their own businesses ...THAT is what we want people who are happy to be here .

DH greatly disliked the Scottish accent and particularly women with Scottish accents. However for some reason he really liked Nicola. I presume speaking sense overcame the accent.

It's actually quite offensive.

I think it's quite unusual to dislike Scottish accents, especially very clear ones. I think surveys have shown that, of British reassuring-sounding accents, what is called an "educated Scottish accent" is the most preferred where things like confidence and honesty are important.

Its not Racist though ,Marydoll we're not a race ,just a nation.According to a lawyer my friend saw when he was subjected to "racist" abuse in London .It did effectively make him come home and join the SNP .

I never said it was racist, Paddyanne. In fact I made a point of not using that term, that is why I chose to use the term offensive. If I thought it was racist, I would have reported it.

However, I am entitled to state how I feel about the comment and I didn't like it. Simple as that. I am also wondering why the poster felt it necessary to make that statement in the first place.

However, as GN is open to all, she has as much right as anyone to post. We just don't have to like what she posts.

I just looked that up Baggs, very interesting - the latest survey said the Yorkshire accent is the most trustworthy in the UK, followed by Queens English, Edinburgh Scottish, then Welsh (which is a very broad church of accents!). I think accents could be a topic all of its own, although I did feel sorry for Birmingham.

For what it is worth I love the Scottish accent. It took me a while to understand the various Scottish terms when I taught up there but got there in the end!

In answer to those who wonder why I think Nicola is hypocritical regarding her English grandparents - it's because she comes across as anti-English but there's no mention of her heritage.

And she's an opportunist. She takes advantage of situations to make herself look good. So many people were praising her for the payouts to people/businesses struggling due to the pandemic. Where did the money come from? Westminster. Give me Ruth Davidson any day.

Scottish accents vary hugely. Some are lovely, some harsh and ugly. Unfortunately NS’s is in the latter category. I find her speech so unpleasant that I can’t separate what she says from the sounds she makes.

Septimia You do understand that the SCOTS pay taxes too,in fact WM pockets over half of our revenue .Maybe check before you post.You are very welcome to the Baroness....who prefers her wee £300 a day job for sucking up to WM instead of standing up for her country...she did say she would resign IF NI got a different/better deal than Scotland....so did Mundell .Seems principles aren't a strong point with her !

Indeed Oldbat, and only gave up his US citizenship a couple of years' ago after being stung for capital gains tax.
