About 4 miles from our home is NT Cliveden which has a massive estate to walk round with an Oriental, Long, Rose Gardens, plus woods to explore.

We have been going regularly for our exercise and the tickets have to be bought online and numbers are regulated. They also have a kiosk for take away coffee and snacks.

We are due to go again this coming week. We now have our coffee and biscuits brought from home in the car on arrival to avoid going to the kiosk.

DH thinks the police could say we have driven too far and are having a mini picnic. If they allowed in only those folks who live nearby, they would have virtually no one visiting as it is in countryside.

It’s a toss up whether we go or not.

Chewbacca that seems totally against the spirit of the guidance! You can't even play tennis or golf..how can a road race be OK? And there is a fuss about driving a short distance to a big open space to walk alone!
This is where my common sense and others' part company! confused

Urmstongran Sat 09-Jan-21 17:16:30

Didn’t people say at the first lockdown last year how empty the roads were, how quiet it all was and how good for the environment?

What’s happened this time to change our behaviours? Are we just LESS scared even though the chances of catching Covid are MORE likely?

??

This is from the government website

Exactly ExD.

I completely agree PECS but their interpretation was that they were running as individuals, who just so happened to be running at the same time as 49 others.

Why aren’t we allowed to sit on a bench? A lot of people need a rest, and I’m sure nobody else would join you on the bench at the moment, and if they did, you would just get up and go!

Peasblossom Sat 09-Jan-21 17:31:32

Lemongrove the Chief Constable reacted to media and criticised his own police force, indicating the approach would be changed.

Totally pulled the rug on a situation they were getting control of and I bet this weekend there’ll be loads of visitors to the Peak District.

Shame on him.

In the first lockdown our village was transformed from a very busy one, with a steady stream of lorries tearing through, to a lovely peaceful quiet place. Not so this time, if you walk around the village you have to keep to the pavement, which means you are quite often closer to people than two metres, even if you try and keep in as far as possible.
Surely the wide open spaces of a local NT property, must be so much better.

PECS Sat 09-Jan-21 17:37:56

Apparently you have to keep moving... I think it is hard for those with mobility difficulties. Pre current restrictions I met up with a group of friends to walk. One of the group can only join on certain routes and sometimes needs to rest. So it does seem limiting for some people. Again clear guidance would have helped.

Bluesky Why aren’t we allowed to sit on a bench?

Because the virus can stay on surfaces & be transmitted.
One of the very early super-spreading events was in a church in Singapore.

A couple who were incubating the virus but had no symptoms had flown in from China & attended the church.
Another couple who attended a later service sat on the same pew & became infected themselves.

PECS Sat 09-Jan-21 17:40:27

Urmstongran at first all NT /Eng Heritage etc were closed in the first lockdown, then government realised that these were ideal spaces for people to walk well distanced... so opened them up again....

PECS Sat 09-Jan-21 17:44:19

oops//posted too soon... I know we can all manage to just stroll along a pavement from our front door , round the block and back again. We will all be OK exercise wise if we do that. In the first lockdown I stayed in my garden all the time but the benefits to mental well being, from a good walk, are important too.

BlueSky Sat 09-Jan-21 17:46:26

Thanks Jeanainsworth I see. I’ve got Fb friends in Italy and they tell me their promenade has been closed to the public, but then people crowd the town centre!

SuzieHi Sat 09-Jan-21 17:49:58

In the first lockdown you could drive a short way to walk. The drive had to be less time than the walk. 4 miles is a relatively short drive (15 mins?) to walk around a NT property - probably 1.5 hrs walk?
It is confusing - as they are saying don’t drive to “beauty spots” but N/T open?
We’re still dog walking from our door - we can we're in the country - but also doing 5-10 min drives to walks. Personally wouldn’t go further at the moment

grannysyb Sat 09-Jan-21 17:52:03

Sorry, a short stroll round the block is not enough for me, I'm trying to walk at least a mile a day. If we all stay at home without exercise we will be less healthy. I'm lucky as I live near a royal park so I can go there, but it does get quite busy and people do drive there. If you live in a small flat without a garden and children and toddlers, you have to get out and possibly drive to some green space which I think is acceptable.

Desdemona Sat 09-Jan-21 17:52:28

The government should be a bit more specific and give a maximum distance from the home address for the daily exercise. Then if it is arrived at on foot or in a car is irrelevant.

Ellianne Sat 09-Jan-21 18:04:50

Nevermind joggers round the village, our police force tweeted today:
Just over an hour gone into our shift and 41 Covid breaches we need to attend already. Pretty much all people at holiday homes. Frustrating."
He later added to say that the number had reached a staggering 50.
So how are they supposed to find the time to stop locals driving around the neighbourhood?

Doodledog Sat 09-Jan-21 18:28:35

I have breathing issues, and should be gently exercising for the good of my health, but I need to stop and rest every so often (sometimes every couple of minutes).

If I can't sit on a bench, I may as well stay indoors, which is what I have done since March. The lack of exercise has made my breathing worse.

SueDonim Sat 09-Jan-21 18:54:37

And yet angling is now permitted. How many people have a lake or river within walking distance of their home? I bet most anglers need to drive to their venue.

Lots of people on here believe it’s not permissible to drive short distances to exercise, but if that’s true, wouldn’t the government have ordered National Trust properties to close, or wouldn’t they have decided themselves not to keep their grounds open?

As I said earlier the vast majority of them can only be reached by car.

I feel people are overthinking all this exercise issue.

??Yes.

Seriously discombobulated to find myself agreeing with Lemongrove and Jennifer Eccles.?

Isn’t this thread very similar to two others in the last few days ?

Chewbacca Sat 09-Jan-21 19:26:24

It's interesting that anglers can now continue to fish because the Canal and River Trust has issued guidelines for people who want to walk along the Canal as a part of their daily excercise. They recommend keeping the statutory 2 metres apart. Well, I don't know about the width of the Canal towards near you but if I was to walk 2 metres away from other walkers on our local canal, one of us would be in the water. It's like the dodgems on there.

seacliff Sat 09-Jan-21 19:49:16

I cannot walk far at all without having to stop for a rest. So I am not going out which is making me worse mentally and physically. I try and do some exercise indoors. Everyone I know is unsure as to the exact rules.

I cannot understand why garden centres are allowed to be open. Surely it is not good to encourage people to go to these places, it is not really necessary essential shopping in my view.

and that's why children's play grounds should be closed too, and outdoor adult gym equipment.

You are looking for a 'trip' out to walk in a lovely park - just at the moment we are being asked NOT to make unnecessary journeys, but we are encouraged to take exercise locally.

Ask yourself the famous question "is my journey really necessary?" - answer ............

Why aren’t we allowed to sit on a bench? .......

because your walk / exercise is supposed to be short so there is no need to sit!!!
Stay at home is the law, except for essential shopping.
