Illegal migrants’ amnesty vaccine.

1.3 million illegal migrants in the UK are being urged by the government to register with a GP and get the Covid vaccination - and the Home Office will ‘take no action’ if they comply.

I dare say the main role of any Government is to protect its legal citizens, therefore on the one hand this is laudable however 1.3 million people here with ‘backgrounds unknown’ is shocking. That’s 1:70 people living here! Who knew?

So please say what IS an acceptable expression to describe people who have arrived here by various means and who are now living here under the radar, completely unknown to the authorities?

We have had a system in place for years for those who wish to come here legally to work, pay taxes and generally contribute to the economy.

We are not talking on here about those people.

People living in the UK illegally UG

Don't be disingenuous and don't try to be cute, as my granny would say.

You've stumped them JenniferEccles grin

Journalists have to make things short but noticeably don't, call people who speed "illegal drivers," or those who fall behind on their taxes "illegal filers." The only group this word is used for in this way are those looking for either liberty or prosperity, or both. They have often only committed a civil offence not a criminal one so are no more "illegal" than you or I.

Probably the most accurate description is "undocumented". However, many newspapers continue to use "illegal immigrant" but many also have policies never to use illegal or illegals as a noun.

Has she? Just work on logic and accuracy and you can usually find a solution.

As the vast majority of undocumented people are likely to be between the ages of 16 and 40, I don’t see the point of offering the vaccine now other than to get them documented, hence they will be suspicious and unlikely to come forward.
Perhaps in summer when we are moving towards vaccinating younger age groups some may come forward.
The difficulty with two doses is that identity will be important to avoid inadequate or over dosing of people without documentation.

Hetty58 Tue 09-Feb-21 14:01:51

Spot on LauraNorder, it's the timing that's illogical and suspicious!

EllanVannin Tue 09-Feb-21 14:07:31

Won't " these people " have to be registered with a GP before vaccination takes place ?

3nanny6 Tue 09-Feb-21 14:10:45

I heard the news yesterday about undocumented/illegal immigrants called to sign up and get a Covid vaccine. That sounds suspicious to me and many will not come forward.
There are older people that have been illegal in U.K. for years
and even though the government say no one will say anything
that is unbelievable, who knows where their data will end up.
Their thoughts will be "look out for the deport immigration transport."

PippaZ Tue 09-Feb-21 14:15:24

There has been talk of an amnesty in the past LauraNorder. It would suprise me if this government suggested it but as they are being pushed (sensibly in my opinion) into more social democratic policies perhaps it will come up. It is the most logical thing if you want to get hold of the actual law breakers.

EllanVannin Tue 09-Feb-21 14:26:30

Who'd have thought that a vaccination programme would cause so much of a hoo-ha ?

The information provided by the govt was that people without documented status should sign up with a GP. If and when they did this ( which obviously begs lots of questions) they would be called up for a vaccine in the priority order that applies to everyone. The govt said no action would be taken against them. So they are not being offered the vaccine now, they are being encouraged to sign up with a GP and then be treated clinically like everyone else. If any do sign up, their vaccine will be recorded on their medical records like anyone else.

This thread allows those who are so good at dog whistle racism a free reign.

It needs withdrawing.

Oh here we go ...
Why?

Let’s just brush an important topic under the carpet eh?

I have been respectful, I have not once used the shorthand version ‘illegals’ and yet, here we go again. It’s totally dispiriting not to be able to have a debate on an important subject without someone calling out ‘ban it’.

Franbern Tue 09-Feb-21 14:40:11

Remembering what happened fairly recently with the Windrush immigrants, who were all here by the then governments invitation and all quite legal - and they were being deported. Do not see how anyone here without correct documentation is expected to believe that this idea of signing up for the vaccine is not going to be used against them within the not too distant future.

Anyway, as has been said, many of those are way below the age groups of being entitled to get vaccinated. Just a back door way of the government trying to get information and start deportations. As, for many of them, being returned to their places of birth could well be a death sentence, think they will probably feel that covid is the lesser of the two evils.

GrannyGravy13 Tue 09-Feb-21 14:41:45

Urmstongran I agree, your OP was just stating a new Government initiative.

JenniferEccles Yes. Because it’s racist. Frankly ‘illegal immigrants’ isn’t much better, but ‘illegals’ is downright disgusting.

Can we please, PLEASE get this thread pulled GNHQ?

Ah I’m sure you’ll get your wish soon.

Instead, why not debate rationally, no name calling and take the subject forward. Seriously.

They (illegal migrants) might well think that Covid might be the lesser of two evils and not have the vaccine but it could be a death sentence for you or an elderly person who unfortunately comes into contact with them.

Franbern Tue 09-Feb-21 14:53:18

Firecracker but that scenario is exactly what the vaccine is designed to protect me against. And, I am very happy about having it!!!!

Urmstongran Tue 09-Feb-21 14:53:57

I’m off to check with GNHQ whether or not I used the derogatory term ‘illegals’ now because I really do not think I lied sw. I do try to be respectful at all times as you well know. I don’t get riled (I’m a calm person) and I never use derogatory terms. I will report this, my own post - for clarification.

I’m convinced I’d have said illegal immigrants. In future I shall start saying ‘undocumented migrants’.

I’ll get back to you as soon as I have had the reply from the Mods. If I have been disrespectful I shall apologise sincerely.

Alegrias1 Tue 09-Feb-21 14:55:11

Jeez, can we just move on?

Urmstongran Tue 09-Feb-21 14:57:24

Happily Alegrias it’s just that I take exception to being called a liar.

I would like GNHQ to check for me.
