Words that make you shudder

My daughter’s partner cannot stand the word ‘moist’. If you use it to describe a cake, for instance, it would quite put him off!
Do you have a word you hate, and is there a proper reason for your feelings?

Lounge. Only airports and hotels should have lounges!

Somethink ! It isn't a word and pacific instead of specific. Really? Nooooo how old are you?

Oh and like, like, like. ?

SecondhandRose Fri 12-Mar-21 10:47:32

The word fell when used with pregnant. How did falling make you pregnant?

helgawills Fri 12-Mar-21 10:51:52

It seems to me a lot of you don't like words you did not grow up with, possibly from different areas. I grew up in Germany and first came to England as an exchange student in the 60s. I was totally mystified that the word toilet was not to be used, had to say things like 'visit aunty' or 'spend a penny'. Language everywhere changes and develops all the time, so, so why not go with it? Unless, of course Americanisms like Mom, I do hate that, and Arthur Scargill speak 'At this moment in time"

What would you say instead of toilet?
I never know what is polite.

Lavatory or as my mother called it ‘the law’ or loo is accepted everywhere.
I too dislike toilet, to me that means washing, bathing, hair brushing etc.

The pedant in me cringes every time I hear the word gifted.
What is so wrong with give, or given that the noun 'gift' has to be changed into a verb?

inishowen Fri 12-Mar-21 10:56:14

These are Americanisms which I detest. Fur baby, and go potty. The latter is the worst. It means they need to use the toilet.

Chookmama Fri 12-Mar-21 10:56:39

Lots the above, but currently ‘jab’ instead of ‘vaccination’ when used by Ministers and newsreaders.

Dick instead of penis, or dick instead of detective or policeman. I used to have an Aunt Jeanette who liked to be called Aunt Dick. I used to cringe because in her innocence she did not know the other meanings of dick. Its a horrible word.

Holibobs, hubby, Sainsbugs .

Moth62 Fri 12-Mar-21 10:57:21

Curated. Suddenly everything is being ‘curated’

HannahLoisLuke Fri 12-Mar-21 10:58:39

Agree wholeheartedly with all of the above but my latest hate is yous instead of you, I could get violent when I hear it. Also haitch instead of aitch, that one is everywhere even on radio and tv.

Grannybags Fri 12-Mar-21 10:58:42

Another Americanism which seems to be used a lot lately is gotten instead of got

Patsytaylor Fri 12-Mar-21 10:59:30

Lav not law

Someone on a thread like this said that grown men saying "Oh, I must pay a visit to the little boys room" made her shudder. grin

I agree.

Totally agree with this. Why are grown men and women saying they are going to the little boys room or little girls room. Makes them (specially men) sound like a pervert!

Elon Musk - the name fills me with terror

HannahLoisLuke Fri 12-Mar-21 11:05:33

Shortlegs

Gobsmacked, Passed (died), Missus (as in 'my missus').

Or even worse The Missus

Atqui

Stunning
Toilet
Pardon ( instead of what?)

I agree. People seem to think it’s rude to say ‘what’ but it’s correct. Pardon just sounds prissy.

Quaver22 Fri 12-Mar-21 11:09:26

When I was very young my mother told me that belly and were very rude words. I still can’t say them!
The word palpable .

Love that, made me laugh.

Quaver22 Fri 12-Mar-21 11:10:41

I missed out the word bum! I don’t even like typing it!

Rosina Fri 12-Mar-21 11:10:41

Lucca I thought I was the only person on the planet that finds 'all the trimmings' infuriating. Every year, without fail, there are meals reported in the local paper where people 'tuck into' (another pet hate) 'turkey and all the trimmings'.

Blossoming Fri 12-Mar-21 11:11:50

The words that make me shudder most are ‘And now a statement by the prime minister’.

coast35 Fri 12-Mar-21 11:12:36

You is both a singular and plural word. There is no such word as youse. And definitely has no A in it. So definitely you cants say definately. I hat both these words.
