Is it that important what other people on gn have or don't have?
A detached house, a one bedroom flat, an old Ferrari or an old ford Ka? A detached house in one area of the UK can have the same £s value as a one bedroom flat in another part. Some people have inherited, some people haven't. Some people have divorced and had a good settlement and others have lost everything. Some people have had good earnings in their lifetime, others have not.
What's important?

I haven't seen any one-upmanship on gn really. Gn has a mix of people posting, each poster is different, each poster has their own background, their own story to tell. Some people reveal a lot about themselves, background, what it's like to live where they do etc, etc, etc. Other posters do not. We only know about people's homes or possessions because they reveal it, are they boasting or just posting about themselves and their family? I'm inclined to believe it's the latter. Should people not reveal anything about themselves, where they live etc?
What is gn for? Should people be banned for telling us about the easter eggs they've bought?

Will I be caught out if I post this and say I've just been for a nice swim in my pool?

Oh no, I responded to the thread about animals this morning and said my dog can tell the time (he can!) was that one upmanship? (Oneupdogship?)

We had a dog that could hear DH's car from a mile away; he'd go and wait by the door although DH rarely got home at the same time.
The dog could also talk - yes, truly, some words.

Now, wasn't that the cleverest dog in the world?

Cherry, my favourite car ever was a Ka. I had it for 10 years, and only had to give it up due to terminal rust. It was great if I ever went the wrong way as it could turn on a sixpence!

Urmstongran made a good point about the sacrifices they’d made to have a holiday home, and while many of us can make choices like that, some can only afford a very modest lifestyle however careful they are financially. Without knowing someone’s whole background it’s impossible to say and certainly not our place to judge.

I just enjoy the glimpses we get on GN into the lives of other folk, the differences of opinion, different values, the sense of fun in many in spite of all that is going on at the moment. I’ve never sensed any overt oneupmanship in all this.

I’m off to the stables where I hope the groom has my Arab mare ready for my afternoon hack.

I think sometimes it is terminology.
I once gphad my... ahem...bum handed t9 me when * referred to the back kitchen and boot room.
No, i dont have a huge pile in the country, but with dogs, converted a garage into a boot room, complete with dog cleaning facilities.
The back kitchen is the utility room ? I have always known it as the back kitchen, but am apparantly a major snob to refer to it as such?

Oh for goodness sake. Whilst there may be the odd person who likes to think they are better than others, mostly it is just a difference of ideas , preference or taste. Boring world if we were all the same.

Besides, my house is bigger than yours. My second car is a Porsche and all my children and Grandchildren are geniuses.

What I like about GN is that it does represent a cross section of society and on it one is meeting people from far more varied backgrounds than one could ever hope to meet in ordinary life.

I see very little upmanship of possessions, but more people claiming the moral high ground and self righteous virtue. But even that occurs only infrequently.

Well I have a whole fleet of vehicles and a host of liveried drivers at my command. The local corporation manages them for me.

In return, I kindly allow less fortunate members of the public to share my conveyances.

Flicker my friend had a butler's pantry! Her house was what you might term substantial but certainly not large and in rather desperate need of some TLC.

I agree, Monica, and there are plenty of GNs who are adept at injecting some humour and humility into their posts, as on this thread.

I think what upset me on one occasion was when a poster remembered something I wrote in say April or September about my lifestyle and then proceeded to launch attacks much further down the line.

I must admit I can barely remember who said what about their wealth or status. It just isn't important.

I have never noticed any of these oneupmanship threads. What have I missed!?

I am an inverted snob but I try not to boast.

I get wistful at times when I read about so many of you who have seen their DGC recently or who live close to them.
