Have you ever been told you have? I actually speak in the same tone to all and sundry, my friend on the other hand uses a different pitch depending who she is speaking to, which really amuses me, if I say why are you speaking like hyacinth bouquet ? She says no I wasn’t, and then will carry on talking in her normal voice

Like you I am the same...no posh/fake voice just be myself.

I don't think so as everyone at work who phoned the office knew it was me answering, every time, which would tell me that my voice never changed.

What do you mean posh voice? I sound like
Mrs Bouquet all the time! grin

Sara1954 Fri 02-Apr-21 19:06:11

I seem to pick up the accent of whoever I’m talking to.

If it's a number I don't recognise I have a very aggressive attitude and am actually quite rude. Sets me up for the day!

It's all according who I'm speaking to. lol
If it's friends and family I'm in my usual Northamptonshire accent, ent, cent, shent and enna gonna voice. Me duck.

I do my best to sound like Sybil Fawlty... been practising for years. Especially enjoy saying " I know, I know" over and over again grin

I know I don’t from when I check my answerphone message, surprised myself how t really sound. My Mum used to have a telephone voice, I mentioned it once and got a clip round the ear from my Dad.

Don’t think I have. Nobody has ever said that I have
MIL definitely does and DH thinks it’s hilarious.

My DC used to accuse me of having a telephone voice if they overheard me on the phone to a patient when I was on call.
They whinged that I never put on my ‘nice voice’ for them grin

I did when I was a telephone operator, many moons ago, but it`s worn off now.

I started working as a secretary at the BBC in 1973 and had 'telephone manner' training. All these years later I'm still surprised when people don't repeat numbers back etc!

I did when I was working, that was my posh school voice, when I had to speak to parents. It ranged in tone from firm, conciliatory or sympathetic, depending on the circumstances. wink
I also have my formal medical, telephone appointment voice, (there have been a lot of them this year) that's very precise, polite and matter of fact.

When I'm talking to my friends, I lapse into my Glaswegian voice. It gets faster and faster, the more animated I get. grin

I did work on a switchboard years ago it was ok. I am a Scouser and its quite a strong accent to posh up.

Nanna58 Fri 02-Apr-21 20:50:06

Apparently so - having heard myself it’s Dot Cotton’s !!!?

H1954 Fri 02-Apr-21 20:53:37

I speak perfectly normally...............until I establish that it's a cold call and then I turn into a crazy, uncooperative banshee??????

I hate my voice. Have hated it since I was 12 and heard it when I went to High School and during French lessons there was a recording studio and you could listen to your voice - speaking French of course but probably sounds the same speaking English!

nadateturbe Fri 02-Apr-21 22:31:36

I'm like Sara1954. I pick up the accent of whoever I am talking to. I'm not sure what my "real" voice sounds like.

GrannyRose15 Fri 02-Apr-21 23:13:27

I have a telephone voice in order to be better understood.

Call centres like to have people with Scottish or Yorkshire accents because they sound more trustworthy apparently.

My mom had a very well spoken friend called Joan. Whenever she spoke to her, mom would alter her voice. Me and my dad would really take the Mick
Air Hillaire Jairn
Me, I sound about 12 on the phone, and everywhere else for that matter.
Coupled with my Dudley accent I think that people don't take me that seriously on the phone.
My voice definitely lacks gravitas
