Hello Everyone
Mine was 'Once Upon a Time' by Simple Minds (an LP).

It was 1985 and I was 13, so quite old really. It was the Summer holidays.
It cost £4.50 from whichever shop was WHSmith before it became WHSmith in Stourbridge.

I've no idea why I chose it. I think that I might have thought it was cool.
I was quite young for my age then. It must have been a bit of a quiet period for my mom and dad, just before I became a bit of a parental nightmare! ?

What was your first record?

Fishpieplease

FannyCornforth...think the shop you’re referring to in Stourbridge was Mark and Moody’s

I think that you are right!
Thank you very much Fishpie

OMG, FC, you are younger than my sons and when they were your age, one of them filled the house with Prince; and the other bought Queen. Nothing quite like royalty!
When I got a record player for my 21st, in 1961, I went out and bought Beethoven's Archduke Trio.

Ride a White Swan, T Rex, 1970

It would have been either an Adam Faith one or a Freddie and the Dreamers one - probably a Freddie one.

Monster Mash - Bobby Pickets & the Crypt Kickers. Cost 49p in Woolworths I remember

Guy Mitchell ‘Singin’ the blues’. I think I must be a lot older than most of you!

GrammarGrandma Thu 08-Apr-21 10:51:24

Elvis Presley - a 78 of, I think, Blue Suede Shoes.

The first one I bought was Cathy's Clown by The Everley Brothers. but I already had a collection given to me by aunts and uncles. I'm not a juvenile delinquent, Frankie Lyman. Hound Dog by Elvis, Singing the Blues by Tommy Steele amongt Buddy Holly, lots of other Elvis and even Woody Woodpecker meets Davy Crockett by Mel Blanc.

Whatever it was, didn't make an impression. I honestly cannot remember either when I bought a record for the first time, or what it was!

Move It by Cliff Richard. DD worked with Cliff's best friend at the time but no chance of an introduction. DD said Cliff would never get anywhere!

“Autumn Almanac” by the Kinks

djgmpg Thu 08-Apr-21 11:12:05

Elvis Presley's Heartbreak Hotel. Which is why I cringe every time they show residents in Care Homes having to listen to Vera Lynn and the like. The image of the music tastes of the older, and even 'much' older generation needs a bit of an update !

Please Stay by the Crying Shames.1966 I was 13 and didn't own a record player but I wanted it.We eventually got our first record player a year later.

Take the A train and Woodchoppers Ball in 1940 when my parents bought a radiogram.

Runaway - Del Shannon. Still love it.

Quaver22 Thu 08-Apr-21 11:20:41

Love Me Tender by Elvis and Donald Where’s your Troosers by Andy Stewart which I thought was hilarious. I was 10!

Moggycuddler Thu 08-Apr-21 11:22:08

One of those budget Chart Hits albums done by anonymous artists in about 1968 or 1969. Can't remember what was on it except for Des O'Connor's song Dick A Dum Dum. I remember that song because I always skipped it. I think the first "proper" album I bought with my own money was Hollies Greatest Hits.

Runaway by Del Shannon. 1961 I think.

The soundtrack to Easy Rider - loved Born to be wild and I wasnt born to follow

I don't remember the first single I bought but when I was 11, my parents bought me The New Seekers, "I'd like to teach the world to sing," album at my behest as a reward for passing my Grade One Piano exam. I played it to death.

Transister Sister by Robb Storme and the Whispers. I went to the local record shop with my cousin and we listened to it in a little booth. I still remember the words:

"She's my Transister Sister with a radio on her arm
A no one can resist her cause she's loaded with musical charm"

The don't write them like that anymore!

Mollygo Thu 08-Apr-21 11:39:51

Careless Whisper by Wham in 1984. My next buy was Silenced by the Night by Keane in 2012, so I wasn’t exactly supporting the music industry.

Ilovedragonflies Thu 08-Apr-21 11:51:22

Dark Side of the Moon, Pink Floyd. I still get chills listening to Time.
