Hijacking threads

I think the OP is talking about merailing. People who basically interrupt the thrust of a thread and turn it around to themselves and their concerns. Very different from a conversation naturally evolving.

We've all probably known people like this in real life. Constantly turn conversations back on themselves and their concerns with no thought for anyone else. Boring and self absorbed

If it was me I would feel relieved that I wasn't the only one and might even take need of some of the advice offered to others.

To be fair most people are having a sneaky browse of the internet when they are supposed to be working they just do the opposite.

Galaxy I honestly don't think that they read their site when they are working.

But real conversations evolve like that. You can carry on talking about something else until the OP or other posters go back to the original thread.

And if MN is my area of expertise I need to get out more. Of course I can blame lockdown for my sad existence.

I thought there was a rule about starting a thread about a thread which is what this seems to be.

I cannot see any rule about going "off OP" I would have thought it was bound to happen. If enough people want to talk about the OP, or feel strongly enough about it will come back, if not it won't - just like a conversation.

I just wonder why this thread has not been "hijacked" by GNHQ and deleted as it breaks their current rules, but that's GNs rules for you. They are sort of amorphous.

They only delete if a thread or post is reported.
Our resident MN /GN expert (hello Galaxy ) has explained this to me, but it's taken me a while to realise that this is 100% the case.
They don't tend to read their own site. Especially at the weekend. I don't think that they have many staff at the moment.

You need to get it back on track. The filter might be blocked with rubbish.

Well yes and there are good reasons for that.

I have just been on the JV thread and I see what you mean by hijacking.

I think I may have just hijacked a thread about not hijacking threads. I think I better make a discrete exit and go for a walk.

Sounds fun! I bet it would prove quite hard to do.

I saw that the MM detractors had managed to get their spoke in. This happens in normal conversation as well when someone feels strongly about an issue, they manage to bring it into every conversation.
