Hotels/Restaurants and Tasting Menus

How do you feel about Hotels/Restaurants that only do tasting menus. It seems to be a bit of a trend at the moment but not one I am keen on. I like to be able to choose from a menu, not be told what I am going to eat and what time to sit down for it. It can also be very expensive and for me a bit of a waste of money if there are things on the menu that you don't like. Are you in favour of tasting menus or not?

Love a tasting menu you get to try food you may not order and the menu is what the Chef has designed so should be their best food.

Depends on the restaurant. I like to try different things but need to know exactly what is in the food and what it is cooked in!

I always enjoy a good tasting menu, but it has to be somewhere the food can be expected to be very good as it is usually expensive. When we first tried this at a local restaurant which is my favourite there were 8 courses plus the tiny canape and pre puddings so we got completely lost and could not work out where we were in the list. It was only when a souffle arrived I knew we were nearing the end.
