IRONIC HUMOUR ..........BUT so true

I had this sent to me the other day and thought others might like to read it too.
.........................................

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years.
No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape.
He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:

Knowing when to come in out of the rain
Why the early bird gets the worm
Life isn't always fair and maybe it was my fault
Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge).
His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations
were set in place. Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children.
It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an Aspirin to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims.

Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault.

Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realise that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death, by his parents, Truth and Trust, by his wife,
Discretion, by his daughter, Responsibility, and by his son, Reason.

He is survived by his 4 stepbrothers:

I Know My Rights
I Want It Now
Someone Else Is To Blame
I'm A Victim

Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone.
If you still remember him pass this on.
If not, join the majority and do nothing.

May please can I be clear.
I am definitelynot accusing you of plagiarism.

You make it very obvious that your own poems are indeed your own by putting your copyright note at the foot of them.
I must say that I do enjoy many of your original poems.

Now, regarding things that are 'SENT' to you.
GN is of especial interest to me, and also a source of enjoyment and enlightenment, due to us sharing our own authentic thoughts and opinions rather than those of others.

Obviously, you can post exactly what you want to!
I am simply clarifying my previous post.
Best wishes to you flowers

To be fair Fanny none of our thoughts and posts are authentic they are all conceived on the back of others.

Grammaretto

Galaxy too true sad
Thanks to Maywalk for starting the conversation but I am quite old now and can truly say that common sense is still alive and well.
I have just watched a short film about climate change made by some 6th formers. It was intelligent, serious and left me with faith in our young people.

Common sense works both ways; you have to have some yourself before you recognise it in others.

Are you sure you're attributing common sense to this group of people, because they are saying what you want to hear?

Common sense is an easy term to applauded or deride, as it means something different to each and everyone of us.

Not trying to provoke you Grammaretto, just using your post to make a point!smile

FannyCornforth thanks for the comment about Facebook and I do agree. If we want shared comments from there, then Facebook is the place to see them, not GN.

I am correcting my use of ellipses at once, thank you for the timely reminder... blush

Sorry Gill, I wasn't paying enough attention!

That's ok! I have read this Ode to Common Sense before, or ones like it, usually bemoaning health and safety.

Maywalk Tue 18-May-21 12:53:53

I am well aware that folks have different opinions Fanny because it would be a dull world if we were all the same BUT I object to being accused of taking stuff off Facebook.

I have been on the net for well over 18 years with my own WW2 website even before Facebook came on the scene so I dont need to copy anything off there and yes I can speak up for myself.

YES I am on Facebook because many groups come to me asking if I would tell them of years gone by because they say its living history BUT as I said I DO NOT COPY.
My tales and poems are all true tales with my name underneath and my original post on here does state that the reading was SENT to me. Keep Safe Everyone.

Fog?

People are slowly coming out of fog they have been in and shouting no more

May you sound more than capable of standing up for yourself! smile

Gransnet is all about the slings and arrows; rough and tumble; brickbats and bouquets!

DiscoDancer1975 Tue 18-May-21 11:44:12

Aww, I’m sure no one meant to put you down. I certainly didn’t and apologise if that’s how I came across.
We have to read it though...before we can say what we think, and you will appreciate then, that you’re never going to please everyone.
My initial gut reaction to it was...I laughed. It has a kind of truth to it, but as you say, you’ve lived long enough to see so many changes. Not sure whether some of them are worse...or better, just different.

FannyCornforth Tue 18-May-21 11:38:09

May we are allowed to criticise.

You say 'I wanted to know what others thought of it'.

Well, do you or don't you?

It's not all 'likes' and crying with laughter emojis on here!

Maywalk Tue 18-May-21 11:30:45

At the age of 91 and having lived through 9 decades which takes in being cruelly treated by so called Sisters -of -Mercy and being bombed out twice, plus being machine gunned in the hopfields and evacuee train I think I should KNOW a bit about life and its comebacks and how SO much has altered over the years .

If those of you who wants to criticise what I put on here I suggest you DONT read it.

I put the above up because it was sent to me and just wondered what others thought of it, NOT to be told that I more or less copy stuff of Facebook.

I dont have to because I write all my own poems plus books that have been published.

Keep safe everyone.

The problem with the idea of "common sense" is it is not something everyone ever held in "common". As it's based on individual human experience and people's perceptions it will vary from individual to individual and I can see quite a few areas in that FB share that do not seem at all "sensible" to me.

I find it one of the most annoying phrases simply because it really means that people think others should think in the way that they think. It's often more divisive than "in common" and divisive is not the same as irony.

I think it’s all about extremes, and never being able to find that middle ground.
I remember being ridiculed by teachers at school, and they should never have been allowed to punish physically, caning, slippering etc.
However, now we’re too far the other way. The teachers are ridiculed by the pupils, and quite often physically hurt too.
This just seems to apply to everything now. We don’t like something, so we go straight to the other end, and that doesn’t work either.
‘ common sense’, unfortunately, is not common at all. We all have different ideas on everything, what’s right and wrong. The major thing I’ve felt over the years...is that we have to be so careful what we say all the time, lest we offend.
Just this one thread already shows how different we all are.

Parsley it seems that May likes to post stuff on here that she has seen on her Facebook feed.

It seems that a lot of people like this sort of thing.

I'm not one of them; I prefer to read the authentic thoughts and opinions of people, regardless of whether or not I agree with them, or indeed 'like' them.

Parsley3 Tue 18-May-21 10:09:32

You are posting a very dismal and simplistic view of the world, Maywalk. Try to find something to be positive about and you will see that the demise of common sense is much exaggerated.

Lucca Tue 18-May-21 08:02:37

It was a poem ??? ?

Galaxy Tue 18-May-21 08:00:16

The poem implies that there was some golden age in particular with relation to children some of us are pointing out that that wasnt the case .

Lucca Tue 18-May-21 07:57:40

My post was to meryl streep by the way.

Lucca Tue 18-May-21 07:56:44

What are you referring to ?

Also, your comment to amber “I think you’ll find that the tide is turning against people like you. Very slowly, I’ll admit, but it’s happening.
Look at what’s happening with your beloved cancel culture”

I didn’t understand to what that rather personal sounding comment referred ?

FannyCornforth Tue 18-May-21 07:54:46

Lucca

It says ironic humour. Did I miss something ? What “humour”?

Is the use of the word 'humour' ironic; or the use of the word 'ironic' humorous, maybe? ?

MerylStreep Tue 18-May-21 07:45:49

For those of you referring to bad teachers: I was the child who was hit round the head that my glasses went flying, rapped down the back of my head with his knuckles. He was eventually sent to prison for serious assault on a child.
So don’t think for one moment I’m defending that attitude ?
You all know what we are referring to so don’t drag up attitudes that have no reference in this day and age.
