I thought that in Australia and the US they still have the 'Shock Jock' tradition, which it sounds like you are talking about.
They tried that over here (with Talk Radio) but it didn't really catch on.
I think that because we already had a very long tradition of radio phone ins thanks to BBC local radio, we knew what we liked, and it wasn't loud mouthed controversialists.
The closest we got to that was Chris Evans and Chris Moyles. But they were on music stations and have both calmed down a lot.

I'm currently listening to Jim Davis on BBC 5 Live.
He's on over night across local radio too at the weekend.
It's a lovely gentle listen, they are talking about local landmarks at the moment.
Last week people were ringing in and telling Jim what they had in their 'rubbish drawers' - string, old batteries etc
Some chap had a flea collar in his drawer; he was a bit confused by this, as he didn't have a cat!

They have good topics sometimes. Some of them are, excuse my French, right up themselves but they get people from the general public talking and giving their viewpoint which is quite a democratic thing to do !

I don't know what that rogue B is doing! I quite like it!

Hello nanna8!
I hope that you are well.
I listen to them a lot. In fact, I listed to radio all the time, usually BBC Radio 4.
We have three main talk radio stations which have phone ins.
LBC which is a commercial station.
Some presenters are right leaning (namely the breakfast presenter Nick Ferrari), and others left (Shelagh Fogarty and James O'Brien). This is the one I listen to most. I used to ring in a few times, but I don't anymore.
There is also BBC Radio 5 which deals with current affairs and sport.
And Talk Radio, which was really good when it started 20 years ago, but is pretty awful now. It's very right leaning in the main. It has a sister station - Talk Sport.

Have you ever rang these shows? They are quite popular here, especially during ‘drive time’. There is the ABC one ( like the BBC) which is left leaning and 3 AW which is more right and centre leaning. Personally I have never actually rung them but I quite often listen. Sometimes it is a load of claptrap, sometimes quite interesting. Nearly always criticising government of course from one point of view or other.
