Someone recently described Boris Johnson on here as an Alpha Male, many others disagreed

Who is your idea of an Alpha Male? To me it's someone who is: Strong, Successful, Good Looking, Confident but not afraid to show a softer, caring side.

My list so far:

Rafa Nada
Keanu Reeves
Prof Brian Cox
Marcus Rashford
Steve Backshall
Will Kirk (The Repair Shop)

It's looking like my idea of an Alpha Male is different to others - let's just say my OP should read:
Men I fancy but who are far too young for me!

Never thought of it as complimentary, that's for sure.

Chestnut

Here's a few more alpha males:
Charlton Heston
John Wayne
Robert Shaw
Yul Brynner
They are all from the past. Maybe the alpha male is a dying breed because women have castrated them over the last 20 years!

Your list seems to rate excessive drinking, smoking, womanising and guns. I for one, am glad to see there's a little less of these nowadays.

That's pretty much what makes an alpha male. I think Chestnut's list is the most accurate.

I'd add Hemingway, maybe?

VANECAM Sun 27-Jun-21 20:13:14

Roy Keane
Patrick Viera
John Terry
Eric Cantona
Billy Bremner
Graham Souness

And no, it’s not a compliment.

dolphindaisy your description isn’t, as defined, an Alpha male, they are disciplined, unemotional, selfish, analytical and uninterested in other people, feelings or emotions. Not someone I’d like to know and I can’t think of anyone who fits that description.

Jaxjacky Sun 27-Jun-21 20:50:06

Oh, maybe Trump!

Alpha male – cock of the walk this week; feather duster next week.

BlueBelle Sun 27-Jun-21 21:26:23

People saying their husbands …reallllllly

I don’t see the term ‘alpha male’ as a complement at all

I wouldn’t consider Will Kirk (the Repair Shop) an alpha male but..oh those eyes!!

I agree with whoever suggested Putin. Alpha males aren’t necessarily likeable but do seem in charge.

Oh, I always thought Alpha Male meant someone who always has to be the leader of the pack. Competitive, dominant, with his herd.
I’ll have to look it up now.

I agree with Peasblossom.

What about Captain Kirk? Definitely the alpha male of the Enterprise. ?

Deedaa Sun 27-Jun-21 23:28:37

I always thought Colonel Gaddafi was an archetypal Alpha Male. Not necessarily one I would have wanted to meet.

On a fictional level George Clooney carrying the boy out of the storm drain in ER was definitely Alpha.

In Derren Brown's show The Heist, one guy was found to be unsuitable very early on. He was an alpha male and therefore took charge of an awkward situation that Derren had set up to confuse the participants.
This guy was not thrown by the situation and simply dealt with it and sorted it out for everyone.
Later, he refused to do a 'task' they'd been set as he disagreed with it.
No tantrums, just sure of his own values and capabilities.

Donald Trump.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 28-Jun-21 01:57:03

Silver backed gorilla.

Any human male trying to imitate that chest beating behaviour is pathetic.

“ On a fictional level George Clooney carrying the boy out of the storm drain in ER was definitely Alpha.”

So is an alpha male the same as a hero ?

BlueBelle Mon 28-Jun-21 06:50:52

I think some people are really mixing Alpha males up with their Number 1 male
You’ve got a Hero
You ve got a pin up
You ve got a leader
an alpha male is quite, quite different

Far north and chestnut your examples are leaders
Deedaa your example is a hero
None of the examples in the original post have anything to do with alpha males in the true meaning
The heading should have read “Who is your idea of your number one male”

An Alpha male is not normally a nice character He is bumptious opinionated full of himself the sort that talks over you and only sees his own opinion as correct Hates strong women The sabre rattlers Trump and Putin are certainly Alpha males as was Hitler and many other world leaders devoid of compassion or the ability to see others points of view
I don’t see Johnson as one he’s a bumbling shaggy ditherer who over eggs his leadership

As Whitwave says it’s the chest beater

Lucca Mon 28-Jun-21 07:28:08

Posters saying their OH is not that useful as we don’t know them!

Whitewavemark2 Mon 28-Jun-21 08:23:58

And they always leave disaster in their wake.
