The papers this morning are carrying photos of CW being accosted/assaulted by two thugs who are intent on taking selfies. Apparently this is not the first time that it's happened and there's talk of him being provided with security. Seriously what can make these people think that they have the right to do this? I hope they are found and charged. They have their moment of fame so I guess that tracing then won't be a problem.

MawBe Thu 01-Jul-21 17:40:39

They were a pair of yobs who wanted a selfie - they might be idiots but they're not evil.

Calling anyone a "minion" when you have no idea of their job is completely uncalled for

The irony of complaining about minion which is an objective description while referring to the miscreants as yobs cannot have escaped many people?

Alegrias1 Thu 01-Jul-21 17:43:35

Definition of yob: yob (yŏb)
n. Chiefly British Slang
A rowdy, aggressive, or violent young man

Fits quite well, I think

MawBe Thu 01-Jul-21 17:58:19

But much more pejorative

Alegrias1 Thu 01-Jul-21 18:01:15

Minion: follower or underling of a powerful person, especially a servile or unimportant one.

Not sure I agree MawBe Yob is an observation, minion is a judgement.

Aveline Thu 01-Jul-21 18:10:59

Yob may be pejorative but these men richly deserve such an epithet. I stand with Alegrias ( try not to faint Alegrias grin)

Chris Whitty is very cool, in the best meaning of that words.

mokryna Thu 01-Jul-21 18:25:49

What if it had been a famous female scientist they wanted a selfie with, like the one who had a standing ovation at Wimbledon? Disgusting behavior.
Chris Whitt handled the situation magnificently.

MawBe Thu 01-Jul-21 18:54:44

rowdy, aggressive, or violent young man

Let’s not duel over semantics but IMO “rowdy, aggressive snd violent” are more than objective descriptions- they are judgemental and negative.
A “minion” is defined as follows, so describing station in life but not behaviour or characteristics
MINION | meaning in the Cambridge English Dictionary - Cambridge Dictionary - Cambridge University Press
23 Jun 2021 — Meaning of minion in English ... a person who is not important and who has to do what another person of higher rank orders them to do: “He sent one of his minions to do something about it “
One may not be able to alter or control one’s station in life or position in the estate agency hierarchy , but one can control one’s behaviour.

Alegrias1 Thu 01-Jul-21 18:59:28

OK, fair enough MawBe it obviously means a lot to you. We'll agree not to call this rowdy, aggressive young man a yob, but we'll assume he's servile or unimportant.

Thanks Aveline wink

Sarnia Thu 01-Jul-21 19:00:01

Poppyred

Disgusting behaviour, he’s lost his job which seems fitting. He won’t accost anyone else in a hurry!

Good to see the estate agents have some standards. Perhaps they could have a chat with Boris.....wink

Minion: follower or underling of a powerful person, especially a servile or unimportant one.

Not sure I agree MawBe Yob is an observation, minion is a judgement.

Minion was a description of his job.

Actually, describing him as a minion was probably wrong, sorry Ellianne smile although I know you used it as a description of his position with his firm.

I find minions themselves rather sweet creatures.

MawBe Thu 01-Jul-21 20:40:10

Now I am confused it seems we are agreed these men are YOBS and I have no argument with that.
So why the outrage directed at Ellianne for describing them as "minions" if they do indeed hold fairly humble positions in their employment?
That was what I found incongruous

Alegrias1 Thu 01-Jul-21 20:45:34

Because "minions" is insulting, can you not see that?

Minions are servile and unimportant. They are followers and underlings of an important person.

I was once a Saturday girl in a baker's shop. I worked for someone else in an entry level job. But I was nobody's "minion". Sheesh.

MawBe Thu 01-Jul-21 20:54:00

Calm down dear, I’m sure you were a very good Saturday girl bu t you presumably were close to the bottom of the food chain in that bakers shop?

Kali2 Thu 01-Jul-21 20:56:18

On the Ferrari show, a lawyer was arguing that the estate agent was dismissed unfairly!!!

They might not have been 'evil' but their behaviour was despicable, threatening and bullyish. I for one am very glad he lost his job.

I guess I was a sub-minion by your lofty standards, maybe that's how you would have thought of me had you come into the shop for your lovely cakes.

But nobody I worked for had the bad manners to think of me that way.

Who knows what anybody thinks but my manners need not come into question. Please stop being personally insulting.

Insulting? Me? ???

Calm down dear ?

NfkDumpling Thu 01-Jul-21 21:08:24

Perhaps if the estate agent yob was a bit more servile he may not have been so impolite to Mr Whitty. Or perhaps he was loud and yobbish because he had to act the underling at work. We will never know.

Choking on my Rich Tea!

Callistemon Thu 01-Jul-21 23:53:45

I've been bottom of the beer chain, definitely a minion then.

Aveline Fri 02-Jul-21 07:08:02

Yes but were you also a yob like that one who harried poor Chris Whitty?

MawBe Fri 02-Jul-21 10:59:07

A man has been charged with common assault after England's chief medical officer Prof Chris Whitty was accosted by a group of men in a London park.
From the BBC website 2 minutes ago.

Definitely not!!

I might have wanted to give him a hug, though, but I'd be respectful of self-distancing now.

Callistemon Fri 02-Jul-21 11:05:12

Thanks for the update MawB
