Following on from a few comments on the Royal thread, who would you class as an ‘icon’?

I’ll start off with Marilyn Monroe.

I agree with a lot of these

I'd add Freddie Mercury

Could an icon be classed as someone recognisable by using only one of their names?
E.g. Monroe, Mandella, Diana, Pele.
I am just chatting by the way, before the thread police jump in to say that is not what I should be talking about on this thread.

Why can’t Rosa Parks be an icon
I would think she completely fits this explanation
a person or thing widely admired especially for having great influence or significance in a particular sphere a civil rights icon an actor and fashion icon

Humphrey Bogart
Lauren Bacall
Ingrid Bergman
Gregory Peck

Clearly, my mind runs to old Hollywood movie stars when I think of icons.

I don't think that Rosa Parks is an icon. A hero yes.
I think that an icon needs to be instantly recognisable.
These are just my musings - I'm not after an argument, honest grin
