Welcome to Thread II!

We companionably mused, gossiped and waffled about Royalty, and vaguely related things for 1000 posts!

Starting with names; and ending on them them…
and in between covered everything from Adam Faith to Scottish Country Dancing!

So, as before, God Bless this Ship and All who Sail in her! ??

trisher I find your defence of Meg highly amusing, your sneering of 1950’s housewives insulting.

Anniebach

There is a thread this morning Alegrias1 about a woman, do
post there and tell those posters to ignore what is written about
her. I look forward to reading the replies .

If people are still going on about "a woman's" deportation in six months and between now and then they start to make completely unfounded comments about how they know how she thinks and what motivates her, then I'll make a comment.

I said Kate behaved like a 1950s housewife, the sneering judgement is entirely yours Annie. If it is a role women should aspire to, or it is their choice, how can it be derogatory?
Personally it's not something I would want for myself or for my GD, but if she is doing a job you consider worthwhile what difference does my comment make?

Anniebach Mon 19-Jul-21 12:03:04

How does she behave like a 1950’s housewife trisher ?

For me 1950’s housewives were women who married and had
children , some had a job some didn’t, only difference today is
many live with a man but don’t marry , now there is the
contraceptive pill so number of children is a choice.

trisher Mon 19-Jul-21 12:13:22

1950's housewives supported their husbands, following them around, promoting his career over their own ambitions, might have a little interest in charity work but his commitments always came first. Even if they worked it wasn't a career because that would interfere with their main purposes to support him and to have children.

Anniebach Mon 19-Jul-21 12:49:46

So Prince Phillip was a 1950’s housewife , as was the Queen Mother, Tim Lawrence, Harry !

Surely in marriage support is a two way commitment?

Three of my great aunts were married , had children, one a midwife, one a district nurse , one a headmistress .

I think it’s sad that women today look down on women of previous generations, in my opinion many women were strong
woman in every generation.

Alegrias1 Mon 19-Jul-21 13:16:47

Does not commute.

(Now that's sarcasm.)

Mollygo Mon 19-Jul-21 13:40:17

Both points are true. Many women in the 1950’s were stay-at-home mums. Many others, including my Mum and my M-I-L had a job or a career. My MIL said riveting Halifax Bombers was great training for the job she took post war.

Anniebach Mon 19-Jul-21 14:26:35

Seems a strong woman, Meg, is to be admired, lives with and then marries a film producer , dumps him and moves in with a celebrity chef, dumps him when she meets Harry. Also cuts off from her family who are of no further use to her now.

merlotgran Mon 19-Jul-21 19:16:12

Harry is writing a 'tell all' book to hit the shelves in time for Christmas.

I thought he'd already told it all. hmm

A blurb from the publisher states: 'In an intimate and heartfelt memoir from one of the most fascinating and influential global figures of our time, Prince Harry will share, for the very first time, the definitive account of the experiences, adventures, losses, and life lessons that have helped shape him.

Charity shops will need to start making space alongside Finding Freedom and The Bench.

Duno why the blurb bit posted twice. confused

Ellianne Mon 19-Jul-21 19:29:31

You're so good at finding these exciting confused forthcoming titbits merlotgran!
Your comment about charity shop shelves is funny!

Grany Fri 23-Jul-21 06:52:50

Billboards start going up on Monday!

On Monday July 26 the first 12 billboards will start to go up around the UK!

They won't all go up on the same day, but should all be up by the end of next week.

As they go up we'll add new updates and let you know exactly where they are. Be sure to go and see them, get photos and selfies and share on social media or email them to Republic.

Thank you for your amazing support and for making these billboards a reality!

I’ve just remembered reading somewhere that Meghan initially had her sights set upon the rather unsavoury Ashley Cole.
I’m not sure if it’s true, but why let the truth get in the way of a good story!

FannyCornforth Fri 23-Jul-21 08:58:05

Ellianne
I still haven’t got around to watching the Charles and Diana documentary.
I’ve seen that Harry’s book is being ghost written by the chap who wrote Andre Agassi’s biography. I remember when that came out it caused rather a stir.
I don’t think that Harry’s book is going to be as lightweight as I previously did.

Lucca Fri 23-Jul-21 09:00:57

Why “sights set on”? Goodness how predatory you make it sound.

Mollygo Fri 23-Jul-21 09:02:09

I don’t know why Harry didn’t get Charles Spencer to ghost write it. Keeping it in the family, so to speak.

Anniebach Fri 23-Jul-21 09:07:49

I find this unbelievable - Meg said to her friend arranging a blind date with Harry

‘I didn’t know much about him so the only thing I asked her was ‘is he nice ‘.

Alegrias1 Fri 23-Jul-21 09:11:09

Its amazing to many that not everyone in the world knows all about the lives and doings of an aristocratic family from a small island off the coast of Europe, one of whom happens to hold an unelected Headship of State.

Imagine!

FannyCornforth Fri 23-Jul-21 09:14:57

Lucca

Why “sights set on”? Goodness how predatory you make it sound.

As said many times previously, it’s so difficult on here to convey a bit of nuance.
I can see exactly why you think that Lucca, but I’ve got my tongue firmly in my cheek (what on odd and rather unpleasant saying that is).
Meaning I’m purposefully ‘tabloiding’ things up, if that makes any sense at all…

FannyCornforth Fri 23-Jul-21 09:16:40

But can you imagine thinking that Cole was a bit of a catch! envy
Now, Harry Kane…

Yes, I found that a bit of a stretch.
I’m sure that Meghan knew quite a bit about Diana and was a fan?
If the young Rachel had ambitions to be a feminist, glamorous, globetrotting, campaigning, human rights spokesthing (which she surely did, but hopefully would have known the correct word for it) then Diana would probably have been a role model?

Alegrias1 Fri 23-Jul-21 09:25:22

I didn't know anything about Ashley Cole.

One of the best defenders of his generation, it seems. Sued numerous papers for telling lies about him and (shock, horror) was once fined £80 for swearing at a policeman. Banned from driving once for speeding.

Oh, he's a bad'un.
