Welcome to Thread II!

We companionably mused, gossiped and waffled about Royalty, and vaguely related things for 1000 posts!

Starting with names; and ending on them them…
and in between covered everything from Adam Faith to Scottish Country Dancing!

So, as before, God Bless this Ship and All who Sail in her! ??

PS I’m not mad on Kate, but my household is mad on rugby, and it’s well known in rugby circles that Kate’s a keen fan. She probably grabbed the opportunity, as she’s very sporty herself, it’s just up her street - and who can blame her for that.

Oh, that's really good then. She is definitely sporty.

Zara and Mike Tindall are not working royals

Yes. That has kind of got me thinking Annie.
If the monarchy is greatly slimmed down - something of which I am in favour - there will be more "jobs" to be taken on by the remaining half dozen or so.
So when the Queen dies, who will replace her as Patron of the Royal Ballet for example? Why can't it switch to someone like Darcey Bussell for example? But then I guess there wouldn't be the same interest in the organisation if it weren't promoted by a royal. So do they actually serve some purpose after all?

Ellianne Sun 01-Aug-21 19:02:38

And without doubt Catherine will also become the face of Wimbledon and present the trophies.

Anniebach Sun 01-Aug-21 21:42:54

Duke of Kent is president of the All England tennis , Kate is patron, he will retire this year so I expect Kate will be President

FannyCornforth Mon 02-Aug-21 08:20:38

I do like Catherine (I didn’t used to, I was a bit wary of someone who seemed so desperate to be part of the RF).

But she is such a goody too shoes!
She’s such a good all-rounder!
Is there anything that she isn’t good at?

Her A levels are in English, Art and Maths. I find that such an unusual combination. In my experience you are either a Maths or English / Art person.

And she’s sporty too! And thin! And good with children! And the swishy hair!

Sparklefizz Mon 02-Aug-21 08:26:12

Was she "desperate to be part of the RF", Fanny ? What do you base that on?

FannyCornforth Mon 02-Aug-21 08:39:08

She used to have a poster on her wall of William when she was a girl.
She went to Saint Andrews because William did.
She endured a breakup and held out for him (hence all the Waity Katie business)
As an aside - I believe the breakup was a test, I always knew that they’d get back together again.
Catherine definitely had her eye on the prize. Her self discipline and determination must be phenomenal

Sparklefizz Mon 02-Aug-21 08:47:24

She didn't have the poster ... that was cooked up by the press. It was Diana who had a poster of Prince Charles up on her wall.

The press claimed she went to St Andrews because William did. Do we believe everything they say?

Why shouldn't she have waited for the guy she loved? The breakup didn't last long. The Waity Katie phrase was another unkind thing cooked up by the press.

William said at their engagement interview that they had bided their time because he wanted to be sure she knew what she would be having to take on, and could cope. He did the opposite of Harry.

In my view she is a nice, stable, well-brought-up young woman with solid family values.

Ellianne Mon 02-Aug-21 09:01:15

I thought it was known that her mum, Carole M, always had Catherine lined up for the position? Not necessarily Catherine herself at the start.

Calendargirl Mon 02-Aug-21 09:05:40

And was Pippa lined up for Harry?

Hmm, should he have chosen Middleton over Markle?

hmm

Alegrias1 Mon 02-Aug-21 09:07:46

Fanny, slapped wrists!

Don't you know that we must NEVER cast aspersions on any aspect of the life and character of St Andrews Catherine? The papers made things up about her, you can't believe any of it. Other Royals now, especially those who live abroad; everything that is written about them is gospel truth!

FannyCornforth Mon 02-Aug-21 09:11:40

Ellianne you could be right about Ma Middleton - like her daughters she has a core of steel and an iron will. Fascinating women

Sparklefizz I do believe that she went to Saint Andrews because William did. I also believe that her chosen subject was picked because it’s what aristo girls study (as did I !)
I didn’t read that in the press, it came straight out of my brain.

FannyCornforth Mon 02-Aug-21 09:12:43

Alegrias tee hee!

Alegrias1 Mon 02-Aug-21 09:13:49

Pedantry time - St Andrews. Not Saint Andrews smile.

Anniebach Mon 02-Aug-21 09:16:00

Kate’s mother planned it all ? Chose the university for Kate,
arranged for William to choose to date Kate above all the other
girls in his year , what a clever woman.

I, for one, don't believe what's written about H&M .... their actions speak for themselves.

They must have got it on after the evening do!
Possibly upon a disheveled trestle table, amongst the left over sausage rolls, and to the strains of Careless Whisper, or more to Harry’s taste, The Birdy Song…

Ellianne Mon 02-Aug-21 09:18:02

And while running her own business and looking after 2 other children!

Oh really? I ‘work’ at a Saint school, and they get quite huffy about it being written in full.
Is it a Catholic / Protestant thing I wonder?

Anniebach Mon 02-Aug-21 09:21:03

A woman running a business and having 3 children ? surely not

I, for one, don't believe what's written about H&M .... their actions speak for themselves.

I saw K&W once, they were visiting my nearest city and I joined the throng, not knowing what we were waiting for. A woman in the crowd told me what the crowd was for so I hung around.

William came out, he's much better looking in real life and chatted and waved to lots of people.

Katherine came out and into that waiting limousine like a bat out of hell. Too much make up, painfully thin and didn't even bother stopping to talk to or interact with the adoring fans who had waited for her. But then, there were no cameras around.

Her actions spoke for themselves.

Calendargirl, you've been watching too much of The Windsors ?

Ellianne Mon 02-Aug-21 09:22:27

Tongue in cheek Annie. There isn't a snarky emoji to hand!

I don't know for sure Fanny but I think its something to do with a change to the spelling over time of the original name - there should be an apostrophe at the end of "Andrew's" as well, if it was really Saint Andrew's town, but there's not. confused
