Welcome to Thread II!

We companionably mused, gossiped and waffled about Royalty, and vaguely related things for 1000 posts!

Starting with names; and ending on them them…
and in between covered everything from Adam Faith to Scottish Country Dancing!

So, as before, God Bless this Ship and All who Sail in her! ??

Oh I think there have been some "but they do a wonderful job" posts on GN. And isn't saying an elected HofS wouldn't do any better defending them?
It really is time that the process of government was seperated from the pageantry and hospitality business. I wonder how long the RF would stay if it was? I bet they'd clear off, Charles probably to Balmoral and W&K to a nice Carribean retreat.

Anniebach Sun 01-Aug-21 10:24:12

Thought this thread was to criticise the royal family

Ellianne Sun 01-Aug-21 10:24:45

I think the dignified bit is just an act and rather shallow. Most people don't really buy into it. Always know they were corrupt. The only bit that really grates on me is lack of family morals.

Alegrias1 Sun 01-Aug-21 10:28:04

Without picking on anyone (but I'm looking at you Elegran wink) there are some who think its OK that they don't adhere to all the same laws the rest of us have to. That's defending them, I think.

FannyCornforth Sun 01-Aug-21 10:28:58

trisher oh, I misunderstood, I thought that Grany meant this thread, not GN as a whole (that’s how self centred I am!)

And, of course, you won’t get anyone criticising the Queen on here (I hope)

FannyCornforth Sun 01-Aug-21 10:30:54

Alegrias
I must admit (this won’t come as a surprise to many) I do tend to skip over the serious grownups’ stuff

Alegrias1 Sun 01-Aug-21 10:34:58

Nobody's above criticism...

FannyCornforth Sun 01-Aug-21 11:01:07

Has anyone read ‘…And what do you do?’ by Norman Baker?
That’s very critical of HM.
Apparently, she has shares in the horrible company Brighthouse!
Making money from folk who can’t afford a fridge freezer!

Elegran Sun 01-Aug-21 11:02:01

But of course, Alegrias I am well aware that pointing out what might be in the mind of the Queen's lawyer when he defends her interests automatically labels me a rabid royalist. I don't know why I do it - must be an instinct to cool down a lynch mob.

trisher Sun 01-Aug-21 11:03:59

Oh sorry FC maybe I was in too serious mode So if we did get rid of them where would they go?
Sue Townsend put them in council housing well there's none of that anymore. Charles would have Balmoral of course. But there is the awful question where could you hide Uncle Andy?

FannyCornforth Sun 01-Aug-21 11:19:36

trisher - heavens, no, I don’t want to dictate the tone of the thread!
I loved ‘The Queen & I’ , in fact I loved Sue Townsend (properly loved).

FannyCornforth Sun 01-Aug-21 11:25:33

I’ve just bought Baker’s book. Because I’m lazy, I’m listening to it on Audible.

Alegrias1 Sun 01-Aug-21 11:32:54

I know I'm probably making too much of this on this thread so I won't say any more after this...

But the Queen's lawyer got the law changed so that land she owns as an individual - not as the Queen, as an individual - isn't subject to the same rules as everybody else's land. S/he managed to do that because the monarch has the right to see and amend laws.

T'ain't fair sad

Elegran Sun 01-Aug-21 12:07:19

Lynch mobs are still not a good idea.

Alegrias1 Sun 01-Aug-21 12:15:56

I don't think anybody is suggesting lynch mobs confused

A bit more democracy, maybe, not armed insurrection.

Yes, absolutely. The royal family should be subject to exactly the same laws as everyone else.

Elegran Sun 01-Aug-21 13:34:02

Indeed. No one is above the law. But even a virtual lynch mob is not good.

Alegrias1 Sun 01-Aug-21 13:37:48

What is the obsession with lynch mobs? Have I missed something? If I have, I'm happy to be put right.

But wanting our Head of State to be a good example of how we should all take the laws of the land seriously, and not look for exemptions, is not being part of a virtual lynch mob.

Why has Catherine taken over Harry's position as patron of Rugby League and Rugby Union? Does she know the first thing about the game? I was rather hoping for Zara or Mike Tindall.

Ooh, thanks for the tip! I’ve just bought it on Audible.

Maybe at Uni she was a big follower of the Rugby team and knows all the songs.

Anniebach Sun 01-Aug-21 18:28:21

Zara and Mike Tindall are not working royals

Precisely Annie

Casdon Sun 01-Aug-21 18:39:25

Yes trisher she is. Kate is a huge fan of rugby, with her sister Pippa Middleton previously revealing to Vanity Fair magazine in 2014:
“Picture the scene. It’s Saturday afternoon in the Middleton household. The atmosphere is heavy with expectation.

“All eyes are on the television … we’re watching England play Ireland in the 1996 Five Nations Rugby tournament … Rugby was a big thing in our family, and the focal point was international matches … We’d plan our weekends around the matches … If we lost, my dad would be in a state of despair for the rest of the afternoon, as if he’d actually lost the game himself.”
