Christmas Carols - Favourites

I went to a church Christmas concert last night and the most refreshing piece was a Spanish Carol. I'm a bit tired of all the traditional ones, but Silent Night is probably my favourite and Sing Lullaby.

At school we sang Three Kings from Persian Lands Afar, which I still like. Oh Holy Night is my favourite - I often well up - I think it’s the change of key?

Three Kings From Persian Lands Afar is a favourite. We had a superb music teacher at school so it was always sung with the lovely descant.
Away In A Manger, when sung by little kids, is bound to have me groping for the tissues.

The Coventry Carol was my father’s favourite, so that’s another.
The Sussex Carol is nice and jolly, but you don’t hear it so often, except on CDs by proper choirs.

Two I’d never heard until they were sung at dds’ s school concert aeons ago now, we’re The Calypso Carol, and the Cowboy ditto. Both such lovely, lively tunes - instantly appealing - I really like both of those. Found a lovely version of the Calypso one on YouTube the other day. ???

My favourite is one not heard very often. It’s called the Zither Carol. We sang it at a concert at junior school and my mum loved it when she came to see the performance.

I like in the bleak midwinter too and Angels from the realms of glory.

I love the Zither Carol, Grandmadinosaur! We used to sing it at school, along with some French and Latin ones. Which reminds me, I still really like Il est ne le divin enfant, and Personent Hodie.

I have a version of the Zither Carol in my Very Easy Carols (for piano) book - it’s easily the hardest of the lot of them!

It has to be the Harold Darke version of ‘In the Bleak Midwinter’. And ‘Jesus Christ the Apple Tree’.

I’m just listening to to O Holy Night by Josh Grobin so beautiful but love when it’s sung by a choir. Brings me to tears every time.

Just love Josh Groban - easy on the eye too.

I first heard it sung by the Songsters of the Salvation Army , many hears ago, and was entranced by the soloist's beautiful voice

When younger "Come oh come, Emmanuel"
But since getting married I realised DH can sing Silent Night in German", He sings it every Christmas Eve for me. He is not a singer so it is a treat.

In the Bleak Midwinter, In Dulce Jubilo and Silent Night (lovely sung in German, what a treat for you Yammy).

Yes but it is quickly followed by Bruce Springstein belting out "Santa Claus is coming to town".DH favourite is in the Bleak MidWinter.

‘Merry Gentlemen’ is my all time favourite! And I always cry. Embarrassing when I’m in the supermarket!

Me too for Rutter . We sang Deck the Hall yesterday arranged by Rutter and the choir sang I was glad at our wedding.

Once in Royal David’s City. The first one sung at the annual carol service.

BlueSky when I was quite young my very dear grandmother told me that God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen was her father’s favourite carol, and that he had a beautiful singing voice and always sang it to the family to signify that the Christmas season had begun. Now whenever I hear it, I imagine their cosy parlour and him singing in the candlelight. I never knew him, but it seems very real to me. I haven’t listed it as my favourite, but it certainly takes me to a different era.

In the bleak midwinter is my favourite and Good King Wenceslas.

In the Bleak Midwinter is very beautiful. It was somewhat spoiled for me by a television advertisement for an animal rescue that showed a dog shivering outside in the snow.

I love Angels We Have Heard on High and Oh Little Town of Bethlehem.

I like Past 3’o clock and in the Bleak Midwinter. Little Donkey always reminds of the AC’s nativity plays.

Lauren, I wish you hadn’t said that. An animal in desperate need of help spoiling your enjoyment of a Christmas carol? Where’s your humanity? Sorry to derail and bring a sour note to the thread but as an animal lover I couldn’t ignore it.
