Presuming BJ goes.

We’ve all had our say about whether he should go or not.
Why not turn this on its head and say who you would like instead of BJ, and why you think they would be good?
First someone from the Tory party because they’re still in. You may struggle to think of anyone, but give it a go.
Then who you’d like from any party or the party you vote for and why.
I’d vote for Andy Burnham. I know he’s only the Mayor of Greater Manchester now, but I think he’s really developed throughout Covid and he listens to the people.

Starmer, yes, a bit boring - but dependable, reliable - believable.

Esspee Sun 16-Jan-22 12:17:01

The problem that they have to be a Tory is that they (the “Party” Party) are now, thanks to Boris, tarred with the same brush.

The Conservative Party is sooo going to pay for this!

I am not backing any of them but I wouldn’t be surprised if Michael Gove put himself forward for the PM’s job. Unfortunately, I think of him as the class sneak so I won’t be happy if he wins.

If we want someone better than Johnson then the bar is set pretty low.

Agreed. I don't want any of them, but if I had a gun held to my head........nope, I would choose the gun. I suppose Jeremy Hunt can at least wear a suit, speak as if he knows what he is talking about on the domestic and international stage, but he is hell bent on nationalising the NHS, as is Javid, Sunak. Maybe Tom Tugenhadt?

Artaylar Sun 16-Jan-22 15:13:03

While I have never voted Conservative it would have been Rory Stewart for me, sadly no longer an MP. My choice now would be Tom Tugendhat. While we now need someone with Statesman like qualities, I don't think the Tory party would go for Tom, so out of the runners I'd say Nadhim Zahawi. While Liz Truss seems to be popular with Tory grass roots I'm not sure she would have the necessary appeal to the Nation as a whole and Rishi is just too slick.

While Andy Burham seems to have done well as a popular Mayor of Greater Manchester the last thing that Labour needs at the moment is another Leadership contest, so it would be Keir Starmer.

Devorgilla Sun 16-Jan-22 15:17:54

GillT57, I assume you meant privatising the NHS. That autocorrect button again.
Tories - Rory Stewart or Jeremy Hunt.
Labour - Keir Starmer. We need a steady hand in government at the moment, not someone who fires up the crowd. Definitely Angela as Deputy though.
I didn't vote for Andy Burnham in the leadership elections. I see him as a big fish in a small pool.

JaneJudge Sun 16-Jan-22 15:21:45

I like Keir Starmer

Thank you for trying to educate me on Rory Stewart. But I’m afraid your time was wasted.
I became aware of Rory in the early 2000s when he wrote his book The Places In between
He did a long interview on woman’s hour at the time telling us all about himself.

Meryl1Streep. Just wondering, do you know Rory personally. Have you actually met him in person.

What an excellent memory you’ve got. I often can’t remember what someone told me last week.

Jeremy Hunt would be my choice, we’ll see.

GillT57 Sun 16-Jan-22 15:39:13

Yes, sorry Devorgorilla, autocorrect, and I should have proof read a bit better! Labour choice would be Starmer, yes he is a little dull, but look what has happened to this country when people based their decision on 'personality'. He needs to choice who is by his side, there are some very good candidates like Rachel Reeves, Wes Streeting etc., but a few others who will scare off the electorate who are terrified of Corbyn.

grannyrebel7 Sun 16-Jan-22 15:42:43

The soldier was Johnny Mercer Rosie51. I would like to see Keir, Angela or Rory.

Daisend1 Sun 16-Jan-22 15:56:26

Although BJ has not, due to his recent actions, done himself any favours cred where cred due he listened to the nation concerning Brexit.
Better the devil etc etc. ?

Devorgilla Sun 16-Jan-22 16:02:54

GillT57, love the variation on my name.
Yes, there are others KS could choose. I like Angela but perhaps we need a few more steady hands at the helm.

Calistemon Sun 16-Jan-22 16:05:04

yes he is a little dull

Dull or steady?
We need a steady hand on the tiller.

However, we're not going to get a GE just yet so the Conservatives are going to have to choose whoever wants to put themselves forward. Not an appealing prospect for any would-be leader at the moment.

Severnsider Sun 16-Jan-22 16:26:09

There's nobody in the Tory party with enough clout to get the country out of its present mess. Perhaps we ought to plead with Theresa May to come back.

Thank you for your sarcastic reply. Why didn’t you educate us with your superior knowlege.??

Bossyrossy Sun 16-Jan-22 16:43:51

Rory Stewart

Atqui Sun 16-Jan-22 16:54:00

They’d have to make sure that his replacement was not present at any of the parties !

Yup - bring back Theresa May. Dignified, so very British and intelligent to boot.

Totally agree
A woman of high principles

Audi10 Sun 16-Jan-22 17:05:02

Oh god fannycornforth I must put my specs on as I read your post as Rod Stewart

Maudi Sun 16-Jan-22 17:07:30

No chance Theresa May will be PM again thank God.

Lucca Sun 16-Jan-22 17:12:55

I’m ok with Starmer. So what if he is “dull”. ( I’d say calm actually). Do we need another jokey buffoon ?

I quite liked this …

Casdon Sun 16-Jan-22 17:28:19

Ken Clarke has been my favourite Tory politician of the last decades, it’s a pity he’s retired as he would do a good job as PM - he’s respected by politicians of all parties even those who don’t agree with him, and he doesn’t hold prisoners so wouldn’t be in thrall to the right.

I’m a Starmer fan, I’m fed up with the histrionics of the celebrity politician era of Boris, we need integrity, calm, sensible and democratic leadership, and he will provide all those. He can be as dull as he likes as far as I’m concerned, it’s a serious job and it needs a serious brain doing it.

Incidentally Maudi do you think 60,000 people objecting to one of Andy Burnham’s policies is a lot? I thought the population of Greater Manchester was 2.8 million?

MerylStreep Sun 16-Jan-22 17:36:33

why didn't you educated us with your superior knowledge
Because I thought it was common knowledge to anyone who is politically aware.

Barmeyoldbat Sun 16-Jan-22 17:36:55

I am more than happy for Starmer to be PM with Angela Rayner as deputy, we don’t need entertaining by a clown, we need someone who is decent, with morals and not self serving.
