‘From A Pet And Smoke Free Home’.

I was looking for a second hand rise and recline chair and went to view one which looked good in the ad photo. When I got there the chair reeked of smoke and was covered in dog hair. The seller seemed genuinely surprised when I declined to buy

I must admit, I only go to self catering cottages where it stipulates "no pets". It's not that I don't like them...I have a cat..but she's quite a fur ball challenge. Big, ole dogs can be quite smelly and muddy. Takes more than a few hours cleaning and airing, especially if there were a couple of giant mutts there during the previous weeks, to get past my nose!!

TillyTrotter that beautiful cat is probably better playing the game than the two who are there. She is so quick she can have a rest in between. It has obviously tired her out.

I seriously doubt that all such claims are true, it's just another favourable selling point.

I sell crafts I make online, but I never claim they're from a 'smoke and pet free home'. I won't lie. We don't smoke but we have a very hairy dog, though I do my best to keep him away from my sewing etc. I've never had any complaints yet, and I've never had a problem selling household items because of our dog.

I fully understand that if people have pet allergies it's a concern for them. But I also think a lot of people are way too fussy about pets in general. Everyone seems to have become 'super-hygienic' these days! I will not 'apologise' for being a pet owner. As my GM used to say ' we all have to eat a peck of dirt before we die', though I'm not sure she realised how much a peck was (roughly 13lbs)!!

This happened to me only five years ago when my granddaughter was born. The smell of smoke was awful on hand knitted items someone gave us. I washed twice and air dried on the line for about two days.

When we were selling our house, the estate agent did accompanied viewings and always told us to take our dogs out for a walk and put our cat in his carrier and leave him in the car.

One viewing took place when it was chucking it down with rain so we took ourselves and our dogs round to a friends.

How dishonest of your estate agent.

Anyone with a serious allergy to animal fur or feathers would need to know straight away not to consider buying your house, or mine for that matter.

If an estate agent gave me similar advice, I would ask him to ask prospective buyers if they were allergic to animals before contemplating coming to view our house. If he refused, I would find an estate agent who would comply with my request.

I love animals ,but my daughter has a serious allergy to their dander and fur .
It's got worse as she's got older .

And I can't even sit next to anyone who smokes even if they aren't smoking .
I start wheezing ,coughing and can have an asthma attack .
It didn't used to be a problem .

So I don't want any items ,which come from homes with pet fur or where they smoke .
My eBay stuff goes straight into a wash and I'm wearing a mask !

I'd be worried about fleas which can breed in carpets and upholstered furniture but those can be treated before they come into contact with ones own pets. More concerning would be bedbugs which live in cracks in wooden floors and also furniture. However, I do buy most things secondhand, not for financial reasons, but to reduce the stress on our planet. I think we all need to cut back on buying 'stuff' as much as possible, repair and reuse etc

Everybody’s home smells of something! No point denying it.
It just doesn’t smell to you. Or if it does it’s a smell you like.

My exMils house smelled of horses and dogs but she liked it. For her it was the smell of home.

My neighbours house smelled of spices. My sisters home of cats.

Mine smells of OHs sports gear ☹️

Hoovers have filters etc you can wash so shouldn’t smell spray in some zaflora that’ll help

We ve always had small dogs and a non smelly home! I washed their bedding regularly and used febreze to freshen bedding every day. Some good friends, no smokers no pets have the smelliest house I've been in! They also reek of? I'm not sure? Stale clothing smelly shoes, stale cooking stinks too. Whenever they're in our car it has not be aired out and 'febrezed' too! They're in good jobs and no excuses they're just dirty! She sits in her NHS uniform after work yuk! He wears same thick fleeces with 2-3 under layers even In. Height of summer heat! Weird! I don't think they can be changing bedding on regular basis either as their upstairs just stinks of YUKKY bedding as well. I couldn't possibly say a word either. So pets? Least of problems at least recognisable like garlic/honest sweat after work/fresh cooking odours that should begot rid of same night! It's the undiscernable stinks that are the issue, shudder to imagine

Someone posted on Facebook recently showing a picture which accompanied an advert selling a sofa.

It was captioned "smoke and pet free home" and the photograph of the sofa had a cat comfortably sitting on the back of the sofa.

So I tend not to pay too much attention to some claims

Anything like that I list as "Smoke free, dog rules the whole household" so everyone knows that there is a dog and hair could be there.

I'm not allergic but for me it would be the smell, my daughter has 4 cats and her and her husband are nose blind to the pong. Before it was a thing to state "non-smoker etc" I bought a mattress got it home stank of cigarettes, ended up throwing it away

I did try to give away a leather chair, but it wasn't wanted because we have a dog!! I tried telling them the dog wasn't the slightest interested in that chair, but no good. I had to take it to the tip

If animals are living in a property to be viewed could be a problem for those with allergy. However, if I suffered badly I'd be asking the question about animals before arranging viewing. Must limit selection of properties given the increase in pet ownership over the past two years. I am sensitive but nit allergic to cat hair etc but if unknowingly exposed antihistamines sorts me out afterwards.

I had a dog, she wasn’t allowed on the furniture. Some of my friends and relations aren’t so particular.

MrOops is very allergic to cats, if he stands next to someone who has a cat he is ill for days, very scary, so the last thing I would buy would be from a home that has a cat in it.
It’s a shame because I love cats.

When we get bags in the charity shop from some pet households there is a definite dog (especially dog ) odour and sometimes we have to put the whole bag out as there is very often pet hair in the clothes etc We certainly only put them out if they are very smelly obviously not everyone who owns a dog smells of dog but some do so when I sell online I always put smoke and pet free home
One day recently we had a bag of kids clothes (small kids) and as I opened it the snell of smoke was overpowering the whole bag had to go out for rags such a shame

Someone who sells clothes on my local FB page puts ‘From a smoke-free home. I have a dog but he doesn’t wear clothes.’

DD is very allergic to Dogs and long haired Cats, but, as a family we have a very hairy dog, two cats, one long haired, one short and two long haired Hamsters, oh and a wall divider full of Fish.
They never bother her, yet visiting another home with a Dog and her whole face swells up and she wheezes like an old horse.

The only thing I'm aware of that gets rid of the smell of smoke is vinegar. It can break down the chemicals that make up the smoke smell. When I used to smoke I would steam clean all my jackets and coats with a vinegar solution while they were hanging on the line outside. The vinegar smell disappears quite quickly.

I was selling some vintage glass ornaments on Ebay, someone messaged to ask if they were from a smoke and pet-free home, I understand soft furnishings or clothes but glass!

They can still smell. I've got a metal filing cabinet that was my uncle's. He had been a smoker but had given up years earlier. I have wiped it over a hundred times, and I've had it for 27 years, but close up I can still smell cigarette smoke.

I agree with those who say it is a concern about allergies.
