joanna12, I agree with the other posters who say you have given out far too much personal information about yourself. This is a public forum, where people who have not even registered to join gransnet can read any posts. I think you need to report your own post to GN so that they can delete it so that your name and dob details, etc are removed from public view. Sadly there are so many unscrupulous individuals out there who could use your information for their own ends. In addition, there may be people near you who can identify you from what you have posted. Please don’t let this put you off posting on GN, just try to be as anonymous as possible. Welcome, by the way. ?

I joined 2 years ago in the first English Covid lockdown and turn to it daily for virtual friendship and company.

to paraphrase tillytrotter "You’ll be amazed how much time you can while away on here", i'm frequently surprised when i check my history, to find that i rarely spend less than three hours, sometimes more!

How is the OP responsible for what other people post - she only joined yesterday, and her first post is pretty innocuous!

And talking of a false sense of security - I continue to be astounded when people post full on photos of their grandchildren, knowing full well they could be lifted and used in child porn, or traced by reverse imaging searches, which will show who they are if the photo has been posted on Facebook, Instagram, school website etc.

I wonder if the parents of the GC have given permission - you never see photos of children on Mumsnet, they've got more sense!

Welcome, Toby1932 I'm in Scotland also, north of Aberdeen, previously the Borders and originally Edinburgh.

I had a brother & sister Border Terrier pair several years ago - my wonderful late husband and I used to run a mixed species animal rescue alongside our "real" jobs - who'd been going to be drowned by the gamekeeper who owned them due to being accidentally closely inbred. We homed the rest of the litter and had the love of these two for 18 and a half years - the inbreeding clearly did them no harm in this instance! They died just months apart and I still miss them.

I rather envy you your parrot :-) We had the loveliest cat called Einstein - he was indeed extremely clever.

I hope you find lots of people to chat to and maybe when you get to know them well you'll move on to private messaging them and develop an even closer friendship.

Don't be put off by any nasty comments - we can't all agree!

It might just be me, but I still think it’s a bit strange to start a thread and then not post for a day

I don't think it's a bit strange at all.
A day is nothing in the lives of people who have commitments of their own - jobs, families, busy and or complex personal or domestic 'doings'.
One poster, to my knowledge, has an ageing PC set up in the bedroom of her sheltered accommodation and she accesses it, through choice, once a day. Not with the immediacy that those with a mobile phone have.

Some people post then return to the real world and totally forget GN. It happens. Life gets in the way. Not everyone posts every day.

It never ceases to amaze me how naive some posters on GN are. When I was teaching and responsible for internet safety in my school, we spent an inordinate amount of time, drumming into pupils that posting their photos and personal information online was dangerous, then their parents would post photos of them in school uniform in Facebook, making them instantly identifiable. The pupils had more sense than their parents.

My son would be outraged if I uploaded a full photo of my grandchild anywhere without his permission. I wonder how many grandparents actually ask permission.
I was responsible for maintaining our school website and the strict instruction from the LEA was no full photos of children, only side or back views should be uploaded and definitely no full names. It's common sense.

The reason I was concerned was that a poster on this thread gave her name and the village she stayed in. You will notice that very few posters offer a precise location.
In the last couple of years, I was aware of two posters on GN, who were outed and had to deal with the upset it caused.

No-one is aiming to be unwelcoming, quite the opposite. Those of us with concerns, were trying to alert the poster that giving so much personal information on a public forum, where anyone can read it, is very unwise.

Sometimes I’m so busy with everything else in my life there will be times I won’t post every day
Sometimes it’s grandkids, sometimes my pets, and sometimes it’s something that is happening in my life, esp just now as I am suffering terrible abuse on line and emotionally from my daughter so there are days I just can’t talk to anyone.
So please excuse me if I don’t post every day, I don’t mean any harm.

Hi Toby - welcome to GN. It's funny how the shyness never quite goes away no matter how old we are. I've had two Border terriers in the past and they're great dogs, although one of mine was a nutter and would have a go at anything on four legs! Hope you enjoy this forum.

The people are lovely always found them to be very friendly, I’m older than you I’m mid sixties, have four grandchildren, lots of animals, I also find it a bit strange when people post pics of their grandchildren on social media, I think some people can get carried away sometimes, each to their own of course but some post pics of themselves on here too, me I’d rather be more private, ???
