What store do you wish was still here.?

BHS. Loved their towels.

They still have C&A in Spain. It's still very good...

Kate, being a Brummie myself, I loved Henry’s and C&A in the town. Jazzy blouse for 19s 11d, skirt same price. I also miss Woolworths, our one had a wooden floor which sloped. Broken biscuit counter was great and so much stuff at great prices.

Loved Borders, spent many a happy hour browsing there, taking books to coffee shop to look through and yes, buying at least one in the shop! Truly missed.

Definitely, Borders was brilliant. Great one near Chester, much missed.

They also changed that beautiful bookshop into an apple store

Casdon, I am glad that shop is still open. It sold the most beautiful handmade chairs

I had forgotten Dalys!
Glasgow had Pettigrews', Lewis's, Copeland & Lye and Frazier's where my school uniforms were bought, as well as the C&A, all gone now, along with Cochrane's in Paisley and Bata the shoe shop or rather chain of shoe shops.

The worst of it is that now there are only international chains left, so whether you are shopping in one country or another it is the same stores everywhere.

Part of the fun of travelling used to be that the stores were different and sold different kinds of clothes and other things in the different countries we went on holiday to.

Country Casuals

The Edinburgh Woollen Mill bought the Country Casuals brand. Our branch sold them (until it was closed and we were all made redundant a year ago ?).
They are available on the EWM website if you don’t have a branch nearby.

Lewis's in Birmingham. Nothing to do with John Lewis.
It was a huge wonderful store and at Christmas it had a fantastic grotto and Father Christmas. The Food Hall always had samples to try on all the counters. It really was an amazing store and is sadly missed.

Iv always loved Wallis and always managed to get an outfit & lovely coats and Jackets....Not the same having to shop on line now

When I was a student nurse in 1960s Belfast there were some lovely stores. Robinson and Cleaver was the grandest with a great sweeping marble staircase. They had a wonderful restaurant/ tea room and my mother liked to go there for afternoon tea if she came up from the country for a day.

Woolworths, Bhs and Birthdays card shop

Chadds - it was a little independent department store in Hereford. It was a great joy: not part of a big chain, friendly and helpful, and a safe haven for my girls if they got in a pickle when on their own in the town centre.

Sadly it folded when the owner died and his family did not wish to take it on.

The city decided to spend a fortune on creating a huge shopping mall, cut off from the city centre by a ring road and both the old city centre and the new mall are struggling. It is full of chain stores - all clones of one another - and charges rents that put the units out of the reach of smaller family firms. It is a shame - the old centre had so much character - black and white houses, the cathedral, the river, and lots of characterful independent shops - but the city councillors were seduced by the idea of something posh and modern. Now both the mall and the city centre are half empty.

Coles in Ottery St Mary, Devon. Small family owned haberdasher and flooring shop. Had everything, embarrassed if you asked for something they hadn't got - and embarrassed to take your money for flooring! Sadly missed x

BHS and C&A. The amount of times, when looking for things, my bff and I say " BHS would have it". C&A still in Spain,etc and brought back memories. On a local front "Preston's of Bolton" jewellery store. My engagement and wedding rings were purchased from there ?

Absolutely love Bon Marche jeans, unfortunately where I used to shop has disappeared but I have just bought on line and the service was very good received them within a few days.
Thank goodness for on line shopping which I used to hate.

I miss country casuals. Such nice clothes!!
