Talking with my DIL on the weekend we were discussing Ukranian citizens being told to make Molotov cocktails to attack the Russians. I said I could never do that as I abhor all forms of violence. She said that she would do it if she were in their position to protect the children. I suppose she had a different slant on it to me not having any little children now. What does everyone else think?

I would certainly sabotage the invading force in whatever way possible.

pen50 Tue 01-Mar-22 12:22:47

I'd do anything I could. Molotov cocktails would be the least of it. Invade my country? You'll get anything and everything I can throw at you.

Juicylucy Tue 01-Mar-22 12:23:52

Totally agree with your dil I’d do it even now at my age.

Treetops05 Tue 01-Mar-22 12:38:20

Protect me, mine and our family? Yes, I certainly would

Secondwind Tue 01-Mar-22 12:40:02

I’d what I could. Anger would fuel me.

Secondwind Tue 01-Mar-22 12:40:36

I’d DO what I could - sorry!

Blossoming Tue 01-Mar-22 12:42:27

By any means necessary.

grandtanteJE65 Tue 01-Mar-22 12:46:38

It depends on your perspective and on how you were brought up.

The British half of my family had served in the second world war, and the older members of it in the first world war as well.

I always suspected the only reason my father hadn't volunteered in the Spanish Civil war that as a schoolboy of 16 he hadn't the money to get himself from Bradford to Spain.

My mother's family were active in the Danish Resistance during the occupation in the second world war.

I have known that however much I dislike violence, I too would fight by any and all means to defend my country if it should become necessary. And I am still willing to do whatever a 70 year old woman can do to help refugees from the Ukraine, and if it all goes sideways, better I die fighting than a young mother with young children.

Slightly off topic I can't understand why a huge target 40 miles long can't be blown up.

Lizzytut Tue 01-Mar-22 12:57:18

Well said

Greyduster Tue 01-Mar-22 12:57:24

I don’t know about Molotov cocktails; I’ve never been able to throw anything more than a couple of feet so I would probably be a liability. But I can shoot both a rifle and a pistol reasonably accurately, so it would be a case of “show me the whites of their eyes!”

Bugbabe2019 Tue 01-Mar-22 12:58:55

Absolutely

Bobdoesit Tue 01-Mar-22 12:59:00

Yes, but with a great deal of hesitation. All of those young Russian soldiers are someone's son, husband or father. It's all so very sad and pointless.
Crozzybird I don't care how Putin is dealt with so long as he is dealt with.

What did the Russian solders sign up for ?

I’m not sure they did. News bulletins we’ve seen have shown them to be totally confused as to why they’re there. ( In Ukraine).

They are there as soldiers, they signed up, they will have to follow orders, or be killed themselves I would imagine. How many have laid down their guns as they must realise they are killing civilians more than Ukranian soldiers, all of whom are dying to protect their country. Non I would imagine.

Freya5 Tue 01-Mar-22 13:02:26

I could, to defend my family, and my country. What brave people to stay and fight.

Yammy Tue 01-Mar-22 13:22:37

Not shoot Putin ...that would make him a martyr...best if he were arrested by Russian people and put on trial..

Putin should be turned on by his own people like the Italians did with Mussolini.
But if it was my family or an aggressor conscripted or volunteer I would make myself fire.

Pedwards Tue 01-Mar-22 13:40:24

Nicegranny

I think l could pull the trigger on Putin too !

I’m sure there are lots of people who would be up for this. Getting to him would be a problem though, he seems to have isolated himself

Rosina Tue 01-Mar-22 13:44:48

If my family were threatened, then yes - I would stop at nothing. I would live a life thereafter filled with the worst regrets, crucified because of the knowledge of what I had done, but what is the choice? If it is kill or be killed, there is no other option.

nipsmum Tue 01-Mar-22 13:45:20

I was in tears watching people on the news making petrol bombs. To think anyone has to do that, it must be a last resort. I have no idea what I would do in their situation. I hope I would be brave enough to do the same. That is a desperate situation to have to make your own bombs

MissAdventure Tue 01-Mar-22 13:45:27

It's impossible to know, really, unless you find yourself in a situation.
I could shoot someone from a long distance away, I think.

Mamma7 Tue 01-Mar-22 13:47:47

Yes I hope I would - I’d like to think hundreds of oldies singing the National anthem and waving sunflowers at the Russian convoy, blocking their way would probably stop them in their tracks - but then again who knows?
Ukraine is dealing with a irrational aggressor so sadly anything could happen .

grannyrebel7 Tue 01-Mar-22 13:50:28

War is always so futile. Death, destruction and lives completely disrupted and for what? It always ends in talks and peace negotiations, so why can't they do that in the first place? I can't believe that history has taught us nothing. So sad to see the slaughter and innocent people's lives destroyed.

Baggs Tue 01-Mar-22 13:51:22

My paternal grandma worked in munitions factory during WW1 as did a lot of other young women. She was 22 when WW1 started and had worked as a laundress (skivvy for years of course, not even paid enough to feed herself after she'd paid for her bus fares) since the age of twelve. The munitions factory was an improvement.

Mind you, she was an excellent laundress all her life - all by hand plus starching and ironing.

Matelda Tue 01-Mar-22 13:52:40

In this country, soldiers are "called up". In Russia, they are "taken". That's what freedom is about.

Sue450 Tue 01-Mar-22 14:01:40

We are not in that dreadful situation but I think I would do exactly the same, let’s hope he doesn’t get to us, you never know.
Evil despot.
