Talking with my DIL on the weekend we were discussing Ukranian citizens being told to make Molotov cocktails to attack the Russians. I said I could never do that as I abhor all forms of violence. She said that she would do it if she were in their position to protect the children. I suppose she had a different slant on it to me not having any little children now. What does everyone else think?

Bit concerned that it was on the internet for everyone and their aunt to watch and just hope that some dipsticks don't take it upon themselves to make and use them in this country.

Don't know if service in armed forces is obligatory in Russia, can't imagine it not being so. There must be many serving who are against the invasion and who don't want to use violence but other than probably being shot for subversion, not much they can do. Even Russians are fleeing apparently. Yes I would throw a bomb. The situation is just awful.

Let's hope none of us ever find ourselves in that situation! But if it came to it and I was in a situation where I had to protect my family and it was a case of kill or be killed, then you can bet I'd take whatever means necessary to defend them. Isn't it a mother's instinct to protect her children, come what may?

I think your talking hypothetically, probably never even had a slap fight with ANYONE and definitely not had to stand your ground with an agressor -ever. You don't know what you'll do until you have to do it!

Slightly off topic I can't understand why a huge target 40 miles long can't be blown up.

By whom exactly? Ukraine has not the technology of drones as some do, and what then? Creep up and fire? Think about it, these are armed to the teeth soldiers, the Ukrainians are doing fantastic job of defence the best they can with arms available, being simplistic and naïve isn't the best look for us safe over here without a clue now is it?

Like in Northern Ireland or polltax riots.....we know fine how they work thanks

Yes I would take up arms to protect my family and my country we have freedom in Britain and that shouldn't be given away without a fight

You can learn to make a lot worse than a Molotov cocktail from the internet!

I know without any doubt whatsoever, that I would do whatever I needed to do to protect those I love.

I can't imagine what it would be like and what it would do mentally but I think it would be the reaction of most people.

Many years ago we were caught up in a revolution in the country we lived in then. We had the revolutionaries setting up a machine gun in our drive {they didn't ask permission!} and when we looked out of the window our very sedate, elderly and inoffensive neighbours were making Molotov cocktails in their garden!! I don't know if they ever used them. But having 2 small children to protect I would have accepted some if they had offered them!

Jess20 Tue 01-Mar-22 17:09:42

Yes, and as I'm old and expendable I'd be a better volunteer to fight than my children who have lifetimes ahead of them.

I would do anything to protect my ACs and GCs. With that massive Russian convoy bearing down on Kyiv, I’m wondering why the Ukranians don’t bomb the convoy and destroy road access.

M0nica Tue 01-Mar-22 17:39:16

Coco51 I think the Russians have air supremacy, which makes bombing the convoys difficult, the Russians will also have them protected by anti-aircraft guns

I understand, that the bridges across the River Dnieper, that cut the country in half have been charged ready to be blown up, but I have not seen confirmation of that.

We are supplying the Ukrainians with hand held heat seeking anti tank weapons, But it is a bit like Brtain deciding to invade the Isle of White, the sheer size and power of the invader, will in evitably overwhelm them in the end.

I had this discussion with husband last weekend, in conclusion when I was a lot younger I would have been in the front line shooting all comers, now I’m a bit more fragile and understand we’re not inviolate I’m more likely to be manning the first aid and fund raising efforts. I would pull a trigger if really needed to protect nearest and dearest.

I was so affected by an interview on tv with a nineteen year old Ukrainian girl who was at the border trying to get into the EU.

She said that the rest of her family - Mum, Dad, sister and brother were still in Kiev but they had insisted that she should try to leave Ukraine because "one of our family must survive"

Pinnywinch Tue 01-Mar-22 18:34:02

If my home and country were at risk, I could be counted on to do almost anything. I would be one of the first to join in.

ALANaV Tue 01-Mar-22 19:21:43

The citizens of Ukraine are being extremely brave ...they have a very good leader but I doubt sadly that they will be able to stop Putin ....he is a megalomaniac who does not want to be stopped at whatever price. So sad .....he threatens a nuclear war if he is opposed .........very dangerous ...I feel for all ordinary citizens of both Russia (who, I am sure did not want a war) and of Ukraine whom we are unable to assist as they are not members of the EU or of NATO .....IF they were, then the whole of the NATO organisation, including the UK would be obliged to join in . Very very difficult

GrauntyHelen Tue 01-Mar-22 22:28:59

I'd make Molotov cocktails quaue up for anAk47 and given the chance shoot Putin right between the eyes and in most things I'm a pacifist Evil must be stopped "if you tolerate this your children will be next !"
