Inviting friend we don't know

I'm going away with a bunch of old friends for a weekend soon. We have all known each other for thirty years and do this annually. This year one of the group has announced that a friend, who none of us know, has been dying to stay in the hotel we've chosen, so she's invited her along.
We're all a bit miffed. Why do people do this?

This thread has rumbled along nicely!
I’m surprised that it’s gone on for six pages!

FannyCornforth Mon 07-Mar-22 13:14:15

Ah! Seven now

And still a deafening silence from the 'Oh you're so mean' brigade to a logical question.

Since it’s that specific hotel she likes… change the hotel and that way she might say she doesn’t want to come…. seems to me you all have something in common… you don’t want her company… and she doesn’t want yours.. it’s the hotel she’s interested in..

No I wouldn't want to attend a school reunion if I didn't attend the school. And if a friend asked could she go with me I would say no, it's only for past pupils.
But I don't see it as quite the same thing as a group of friends.

However I do get the point someone made about not wanting to share personal stuff with someone new.
And on reflection perhaps she should have checked with you.

But I would try to make her feel welcome anyway.

It's a group of friends who have a once a year reunion.

Beswitched Mon 07-Mar-22 21:34:44

Why is a group of schoolfriends having a reunion different to a group of old colleagues having a reunion? Genuine question.

Sounds like that group of mean girls at high school. One of you think that she is lovely so see how it goes. If it doesn't work then she might decide not to be with you.

Why don't you ask your friend why she asked her friend?

What on Earth do you mean?
‘A deafening silence’?
You’ve got seven pages out of your ‘dilemma’, or whatever it is.
Perhaps others have lost interest?

Calendargirl Tue 08-Mar-22 06:59:28

I don’t think the OP started this thread to just generate pages of responses FannyC.

I think she saw it as a genuine ‘dilemma’, and wanted to see if others thought as she did, or not. Sometimes you need to seek others opinions to open your own mind.

In this case, I think the vast majority agree with the OP’s mindset.

FannyCornforth Tue 08-Mar-22 07:10:02

Calendargirl I admit that I haven’t read the full thread. I think I stopped after page 1.

I was genuinely surprised that it had got so many responses (not a criticism)

And then I questioned ‘the deafening silence’ comment

I honestly don’t have much of an opinion on Op’s dilemma

nadateturbe Tue 08-Mar-22 07:18:25

The cast majority do agree. OP seems annoyed that everyone doesn't.

How are people supposed to make new friends when women are so cliquey and unwelcoming to new people?
This woman might be new to the area.
She may be newly bereaved.
She could be from another country so doesn't have a network of old friends to fall back on
Yes it can change the dynamic a bit, but it can also breath new life into a group when you open up to new people.

Now entering the 8th page Fanny.

You’ve got a right bee in your bonnet, haven’t you! ? ?

Freya5 Tue 08-Mar-22 08:33:09

I remember a friends 70th, her sister brought two friends along that hadn’t been invited, after the initial shock, they were welcomed and a good time was had by all .

No just curious why you appear to have come onto a thread with the sole purpose of being rude and unpleasant.

FannyCornforth Tue 08-Mar-22 08:54:30

Honestly, I’m not being either.

I’ve come onto the thread for much the same reason as I come onto any thread.

To see what’s being discussed.

I’ll leave you to it again; and I as I said on page 1, I hope that you have an enjoyable occasion. smile

Well thank you for your input confused

FannyCornforth Tue 08-Mar-22 10:12:04

You’re welcome.
There’s no need to be confused

Beswitched Tue 08-Mar-22 10:24:16

I think it's up to me to decide if I'm confused by your sudden and rather odd inputs.
