Just wondering if people sign out of GN, email, Duolingo or anything else you have to sign in to. I almost always do at the end of the day, and always when I've finished with internet banking. Does anyone know if there are any implications for being hacked (particularly email) if you don't?

I only sign out of my internet banking and I also close down the page. I was asked if I closed the page by their security people when they were investigating an issue so now I do it. No idea why this is needed.
I can’t think why I should be concerned if any family members were able to read my posts. They are well aware of my views. In fact anyone who knows me could identify me on Gransnet.

Bluebelle I log out of GN when I feel exasperated and need to sit on my hands for a while!!
Then I forget what it was all about and log back in, if it lets me.

Kircubbin you go to Settings, scroll down to your browser, scroll to ‘Clear history and website data’.

But why not just shut the computer and walk away joseanne wouldn’t that achieve the same and save all the password hassle ?

I sign out of amazon and my bank, tesco, etc. Not FB or GN

Don't know what all the pass word hassle is about, I have no problem with signing in and out of Gransnet.

I also sign out of everything else, banking of course, that's a given, but online shopping, as well as all sites I use.

OakDryad, I don't believe there are any servers that cannot be compromised. However, complex passwords and two factor authentication are the best ways to ensure that you keep your data private. Also, if you use a password manager to log you in, you will not activate a key logger. A password manager also takes the worry out of remembering passwords if you choose to log out.

There are several types of key loggers, but some are based on hardware to capture your keystrokes and others are apps that you are tricked into downloading. The normal warnings about being careful when 'clicking' links applies. Having good anti-virus protection is essential.

As to whether or not you should sign out of websites, if you are confident that no-one you don't trust can access your device, I would say it doesn't really matter, you have to carry out your own risk assessment. If you shut down your device when you aren't using it, you add an extra layer of security when you put in your device password to open it as well.

I always log out of Facebook, because if you don't, it's easier for hackers to get into your account.

Internet banking, medical stuff, anything that involves money, always log out. My computer and devices are (different) password protected so sign out when I switch off.

How to log out of grans net please

nanna8 Sat 17-Aug-24 08:09:30

Most things like internet banking actually time you out here ( which can sometimes be annoying but mostly a good thing ) Top right gransnet there is a little yellow logout box. Make sure you know your password to get back in.

Always log out of anything financial and never save my card details with any regular company I purchase from either.

As for the rest, no, I cannot be bothered to keep signing in and out. There is nothing I do online, that i would be bothered if anyone read anyway. GN is in the public domain, as is Facebook, most of my email is transactional. Sharing information, commenting on stuff in the public domain. Nothing I would be embarrassed or ashamed of if someone else saw it.

My banking and NHS apps log me out as soon as I come out of them, others stay logged in.

I always sign out of my three e-mail addresses every time I have used any of them.

Internet banking likewise.

After using my bank or any Government site, I clear my browser history as well.

As far as I know, both signing out, and clearing your browser history makes it harder for hackers to access our computors.
