Harry and Meghan have issued a photo of Lilibet taken on her first birthday at Frogmore.

What a sweet little girl and what lovely colour hair, more copper than lighter red.

I have just seen the photo on DM online, awwww adorable little girl and yes I agree, beautiful hair....

Cute - she has a lot of teeth for her age.

tanith Mon 06-Jun-22 22:53:17

She is lovely has Harry’s colouring. I just read that Harry and Megan wanted their photographer to take pictures when they took Lili to meet the Queen and were told No in no uncertain terms, as it was a private family visit.

Callistemon21 Mon 06-Jun-22 22:59:01

She looks so similar to my DD1 at that age, same colour straight hair too!

Beautiful

Lovely photo. She’s a lot like Harry.

Watch out, Archie! ?

I wonder who in Meghan's family carries the red-haired gene?

You don't need both sides to have the gene.
That's a Spencer gene.

In fact, neither DH nor I have red hair so it must have been a recessive one.

BoadiceaJones Mon 06-Jun-22 23:47:18

I understood that being recessive, both parents' input is required. But of course, that's based on my (very ancient) school genetics knowledge.

My daughter has red hair too, but neither of her parents do. The gene is from my father, who didn't have red hair, but his mother did.

Both parents could have genes which have been recessive for generations.

And yet, my mother and her family are red-haired going back many generations, my children's father has red-haired uncles/aunts, and none of their descendants- children/grandchildren/gt grandchildren are red (though my son was born red, went blond and stayed that way, but with a red beard). Most of the Spencer grandchildren are blond, though Lady Sarah's son is red. None of William's kids is red. The chances of their having two red-haired children are very, very slight. None of the Markles or Raglands have claimed red hair to the best of my knowledge. Very interesting to hear from a geneticist who really knows about this stuff.

Can imagine any photo would be sold to the highest bidder so hardly surprising it was refused. Cute little baby though.

Two of my cousins had red hair (not siblings) and one of my uncles (who died in his twenties) was apparently another red head. The genetic links are interesting.

They did not have a photographer. This photo was taken candidly by one of the friends attending the birthday party.

And they respectfully waited until AFTER the jubilee to post it online.

Has Meghan's father ever been asked about hair colouring in his family? It's a recessive gene, which doesn't necessarily manifest itself for generations.

In my daughter's case, none of her parents or grandparents has red hair. Nobody else in the current generation of our families does either. However, my grandmother did, so I must be carrying a recessive gene. One of my ex-husband's aunts on his father's side has red hair, which means that both have inherited a gene from a mutual ancestor. We could never work out which one because we never had any colour photos of them.

It was completely unexpected when my daughter was born with a mop of red hair. My son, who has mousy straight brown hair like I do, has already worked out that he could be carrying a recessive gene for red hair.

Hair colouring is actually quite complicated:

Indeed! My daughter loves it. When she was little, a hairdresser told her that people spend hundreds of pound to dye their hair red, but she has hers for free.

We probably cross posted. smile

I have a friend from South Africa who has 2 red headed children and none of the rest of the family in recent memory have red hair. So it happens more than we think it does IMO.

Still rare though.
