Well thank goodness this new PM debacle is over.. just have to see if what is promised is delivered and hope we all get the support we need?

Callistemon21 Tue 06-Sept-22 22:48:49

Surely Johnson is still an MP
Yes, he is.

Theoddbird Tue 06-Sept-22 22:49:05

Blondiescot, how would you feel if you were going into a new job and everyone was saying that you would be rubbish? All I am saying that we should give Liz and her team a chance. A lot of new faces with new ideas. We need to be positive. Gransnet is always full of negativity. I am a great believer in sending positivity out into the Universe. More people should try it...

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 06-Sept-22 22:53:09

As I said earlier Theoddbird, she isn’t a new face and nor will a lot of her Cabinet members be unknown to us. Based on her previous performance we don’t have much reason for positivity.

Galaxy Tue 06-Sept-22 22:53:58

Me being positive will have zero impact on whether Truss is a good PM or not.

I'm just going to wait and see. I'm amazed she's so thrilled to get the job actually. I can't imagine being PM at the moment is a job many normal folk would want.

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 06-Sept-22 23:04:29

Does it say anything about her grasp of reality?

I'm glad you've said that, GSM. You're not so blue as to have lost your grip on reality ?

Dickens Tue 06-Sept-22 23:52:46

I think if I hear the word "deliver" one more time, I might just scream.

Johnson’s have just bought a £3m house near me in Sarf London (he’s bought in the posh bit) - it’s a long way from Uxbridge. He won’t be serving his constituents much from here. It’s a Labour constituency and voted 80% remain. Liz Truss has lived quite near in next S London borough for years . I’ve never been sure what her connection with Norfolk was.

"Gransnet is always full of negativity"

That's a very negative comment Theoddbird

And as has been said, she has been a cabinet minister for longer than, I believe, anyone else but Gove. She was a key player in the governments that got us to this point. She has had all the chances in the Universe.

..and apologies to GSM who got there before me. Must read to the end of the thread, must read to the end of the thread...

Gransnet has been negative, but then it has be a very negative outlook for the last few years, Truss has a mountain to climb I’m sure we all hope she is successful, time will tell.

I’m equal parts appalled and terrified by her Cabinet selections.

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 07-Sept-22 09:15:22

Me too. But that’s what happens when you buy support with promises of jobs.

Zonne Wed 07-Sept-22 09:34:06

True enough. Do you think there are any Tory MPs who understand the difference between campaigning and governing?

I am genuinely baffled as well. The wider party was fairly divided over her, with the majority not voting for her. The majority of MPs voted against her. Wouldn’t you think she’d want to do some bridge building? It seems to me further evidence that she is a very poor strategist.

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 07-Sept-22 09:43:25

If she thinks she's protected herself by appointing people who (conditionally) supported her, she may have a rude awakening. Some of these people still harbour ambitions. Brutus is always lurking.

She knew what she was taking on. I don't get the impression she is about to collapse under the comments. If she is, she is the wrong person for the job, surely.

I am not expecting to like her politics (never say never), but I enjoyed the manner of her speech yesterday. I know it's been heavily criticised for not setting the world alight with jokes and flummery, but that's okay with me if - and this is essential - she deals with the problems in the best way for all.

henetha Wed 07-Sept-22 09:51:09

It surely is only fair to give her a chance.

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 07-Sept-22 09:52:50

Something that troubles me, and perhaps it shouldn't, is the influence of her husband. He's stayed out of the limelight but he has a degree in econometrics and mathematical economics and she freely admits discussing her economic policies with him. Will we have an additional, unappointed adviser behind the scenes?

I might need a hip replacement. My surgeon has never done it before but has been responsible for assisting in many disastrous operations over the last 12 years. So…(oh I give up you know where I'm going with this)

No, it isn't. That is not how politics work. We may not like it, but it is a fact. I would rather critique policy than personality (unless someone is inappropriate or lawbreaking). Not everyone agrees, so "fair" doesn't come into it.

I think she is going to have to explain her economics. If he can help her do that so that we can pass judgement, then I can live with that. I we found she was listening to him rather than ministers and civil service advisors that would not be good.
