Well thank goodness this new PM debacle is over.. just have to see if what is promised is delivered and hope we all get the support we need?

I wouldn’t like to be her.

BlueBelle Tue 06-Sept-22 18:09:33

A woman of her word indeed ???
Brought up left wing grew into Lib Dem now a Tory
Was a fervent Anti Brexit now a Brexit hoorayer

No confusion as to what she stands for !!!!!

No, Petera, Cameron was not wrong to object to the lack of the usual process for electing a new party leader. Who knows if Brown (for whom I have a lot of admiration) would have won? It was a bit of a stitch up though, and I can't begin to imagine what would have been said if BJ had elected his own successor.

I'm not a member of any political party but I guess that if one wants to have a say in who the next leader of any party is one has to join and pay up.

The usual process was followed. Two people put themselves forward and one failed to achieve enough nominations and didn't make the ballot. In just the same way as all the candidates in the current election apart from Truss and Sunak eventually did.

Cameron did not complain about the process, he complained that Brown - once elected according to the usual processes - did not call a general election.

So once again was Cameron wrong?

No, I don't consider that he was wrong. It was a stitch-up, a pre-arranged deal, and I say that being a Labour voter at the time. But, he would have complained, wouldn't he? What's Opposition about if not to complain?

MayBee70 Tue 06-Sept-22 18:26:26

My big fear ( and I’ve heard nothing that she’s ever said that reassures me) is that she’s going to strip away workers rights. She thinks that British workers are lazy and if she makes them work harder it will improve productivity.

Dempie55 Tue 06-Sept-22 18:26:54

Bless her little cotton socks, she is obviously really proud to have been chosen as PM, but I fear she is going to be a lamb to the slaughter.

And there we agree - there should have been a GE in my opinion (although how you stitch up a secret ballot...).

The difference is that I also think there should be a GE this time. Rules were followed to the letter in both cases.

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 06-Sept-22 18:36:04

If rules were followed to the letter in both cases, we can't complain, can we, even if we don't like the outcome?

i think rishi had a lucky escape

There's a bit of that feeling across the Channel from what I am picking up. The everyday French seem to regard Liz Truss as energetic, enthusiastic and hard working, from what little they have seen. I think that is because she has cropped up in many roles in Europe in the past, especially round the Cameron time.
I'm not sure they see her as strong though and there are several criticisms of her already creating a mésentente cordiale.
I hope she won't fall at the first hurdle.

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 06-Sept-22 18:47:55

He'll certainly make more money! A lot of people think the PM's salary is huge. It really, really isn't. Worked out on an hourly basis it would be well below minimum wage despite the provision of living accommodation and other expenses.

Zonne Tue 06-Sept-22 18:48:11

Her first chance to set out a vision, and to inspire us (even a bit) and all she can manage is a string of boring cliches?

She doesn’t have to be an orator; she doesnt have to be witty. She does need to show there is some substance to her ideas, and she failed miserably. Her speech was just trite and shallow. It’s the sort of thing you’d expect from a low achieving backbencher, who hasn’t been briefed properly.

Aspiration nation? Shoot me now.

Criticising Angela Raynor is sacrilege here ruthie.

That’s nonsense Germanshepherdsmum. There are all shades of political opinion, and within Labour supporters not everybody thinks Angela Rayner is an asset to the shadow cabinet, just the same as not everybody who’s a Tory supporter rated Liz Truss- but Rayner is not who this discussion is about.

Just my experience Casdon.

It's not the salary that attracts them. It's the big bucks that can be made after leaving office. Johnson is writing his bio right now and then its off to speaking events etc. Once he has hay in the loft then he can plan his comeback, as he referenced in his leaving speech.

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 06-Sept-22 19:43:18

I think Sunak is in a position to do far better than that.

Did Ty Thatcher arrange for ex PM’s to have a pretty big salary?

MayBee70 Tue 06-Sept-22 20:24:30

didn’t ( why does auto correct always change it to Did Ty?)

Why are people who post on here so negative. Day after day I see negative comments about everything. Why not say...give her a chance. Let's see what she does. She might bring a breath of fresh air and ideas that will work...

The Tories have been in power now for 12 years, under a variety of leaders. Please enlighten me as to why we should think it will be any different under this one?

Katie59 Tue 06-Sept-22 20:54:33

The reality is that political activists tend to be at the extreme end of the spectrum that got Corbyn elected and Johnson. Who knows how Truss will turn out, although I expect the right wing of the Tory party to dominate, plenty of lofty ambitions in her speech today, and nowhere enough time to do it.

Kim19 Tue 06-Sept-22 21:00:58

Never mind, even if she's slaughtered (and I hope not) she'll have the ex PMs allowance of £115,000 per annum to struggle along on.

vegansrock Tue 06-Sept-22 21:49:23

Truss’ speech was a weak list of soundbites with no mention of levelling up, which was supposed to be such a big part of the Tory platform, or of the climate crisis , which is obviously to be ignored She may have appealed to a few Tory members, but she hasn’t won over the voters at large yet. The new cabinet seems to be stuffed with characters with little track record, limited intellectual gravitas, another bunch of nodding dogs.

LizzieDrip Tue 06-Sept-22 22:42:12

Johnson is writing his bio right now and then its off to speaking events etc.

Surely Johnson is still an MP and should now be focussing his time on serving his constituents in Uxbridge! Goodness knows, they’ve probably had precious little support from him in the past.
