Something that troubles me, and perhaps it shouldn't, is the influence of her husband. He's stayed out of the limelight but he has a degree in econometrics and mathematical economics and she freely admits discussing her economic policies with him. Will we have an additional, unappointed adviser behind the scenes?

I think she is going to have to explain her economics. If he can help her do that so that we can pass judgement, then I can live with that. I we found she was listening to him rather than ministers and civil service advisors that would not be good.

I'm looking forward to seeing her face close questioning on her much-criticised economic policies. Alone. I'm not willing her policies to fail because that would be bad news for everyone (except the Opposition), but I am genuinely curious about the validity of the criticisms, as to which time will tell. I'm not an economist so like to hear the views of those who are.

This new Conservative administration is doing nothing more than doubling down on an already failed economic strategy, hoping one last push will reverse the stagnation we have seen since that strategy was first applied. It seems that the Conservative party mean to carry on what they have done since 2010, which is to harm the economy by their actions or neglect.

I'm waiting to see the detail of what has been widely touted as Truss's recue package to deal with the high energy prices. At the moment it looks as though it's a glorified version of Sunak's original scheme which involved an enforced 'loan' to all domestic energy users, to be 'paid back' via their energy bills over a period of time. Truss's plan could involve a far larger enforced loan to be paid back over a longer period of time. I can't see this being any more popular than Sunak's scheme was (and which he abandoned later)

I am absolutely no Tory, but, watching a clip of John Major yesterday, he always came across as a credible leader and statesman. Even Mrs Thatcher gave an air of competence ( unclenches teeth).
Boris Johnson simply came across as a buffoon ( whether deliberate or not), and I can’t say Liz Truss has an impressive presence either.
And, no, I’m with Petera, governing a country is not something at which someone should be ‘ given a chance’. How do those who believe that feel about giving Keir Starmer a chance?

From what I have read, her economic and policy advisers are of the Tax Payer's Alliance and similar groups, so more small government, austerity and trickle down economics. Politicians can be forgiven for being focused on the here and now, but the disaster of Osborne's austerity is still with us in our skeletal public services. On a very simplistic note ( Gcse Economics) there is little point in attracting companies with lower Corporation Tax if the market, ie consumers, are not spending money due to fear of job loss, increased mortgage costs etc. Remember, one of the delightful promises is yet another 'bonfire' or regulations, so kiss goodbye to your adult children's job security. I honestly cannot think of one good thing to come from this Tory administration including Ms Truss.

For those 1950's born women (myself included) who are having to wait to receive their SP, I should think there is no joy in seeing Therese Coffey as Health Secretary. She, along with Guy Opperman have been in complete denial that waiting an extra 6 years for your SP after paying into it for you whole working life has consequences. Now, we have a person who obviously enjoys her food a little too much and, apparently, likes to smoke cigars, will probably also deny the fact that it generally falls on women to care for elderly relatives which usually ends up affecting their health too. I don't expect many people will hang on her every word with regards to health. And, sorry, I'm being affected by the mercury retrograde and the forthcoming full moon this weekend, but she make Boris look like a Vogue model (sarc).

effalump agree she isn't the best role model as Health Secretary..i have my own weight issues and labelled obese and not as heavy as her but GP designated a nurse to oversee my weight issues..how can she Ms Coffey represent us a Health Secretary..bloody unbelievable..am staggered..and don't get me started on her smoking habit..ugh!

I suppose Ms Coffey has an incentive to look after the NHS because she will be needing its services soon ?
It's a time bomb waiting to happen in Britain with so many overweight/morbidly obese (Coffey comes in this category I would think) people.
