Give Liz a chance, she deserves that at the very least. It’s too easy to criticise, anyone thought of going into politics?

exactly this. I think she will appoint some remarkable new people, not the same old types.

“Democracy in action”

this is so odd to me, it is how the leader of any Party is chosen.
should we turn it into a Eurovision Song Contest?
surely GN members who are all older people do realise that it is the method used by all political parties in the UK?

I've just started this thread as I am finding it "odd" too.

Good grief. Most of us are aware of how the political parties elect their leaders, but it doesn't mean we have to be happy with it or that we would like a presidential style set up instead, but I honestly do not think that Truss is up to the job. She promises what she thinks people who matter (in recent weeks, members of the Conservative party) want to hear, without any recognition of the reality of promising no tax increases, but help with energy bills and taking care of the NHS, whatever that means. Her ignorance promotion of trickle down economics is frightening, and her dismissal of the impact of the cancellation of the short term NIC increase was indicative of where she will be heading. Why did nobody point out that this 'temporary' increase of NIC was supposed to fund catching up within the NHS?

As a Labour supporter, I can't wait for PMQT - I almost feel sorry for her ?

My thoughts exactly. Except we're out for lunch in Wednesday so will have to watch it later on IPlayer.

Allsorts Mon 05-Sept-22 16:44:48

Zinnemann what did you think would happen. Perhaps she will be able to govern without all tge heckling and stupidity that led up to this.
Why don’t those that want labour at any cost campaign to get Corbyn back. He seemed to have what made a lot of you happy.
Meanwhile the country is in a mess, let’s see how she handles things which is a near impossible task before casting her to the wolves the first day. Not that Kieran has any ideas but doesn’t like any the opposition come up with and won’t obviously any future ones, it would be so nice to see him have an idea, prove he’s awake at least, just one little one would be a start.?

HousePlantQueen Mon 05-Sept-22 16:59:33

Allsorts:

(1) Not all who despair at the Tory government want a Labour alternative, and of those who do, not all wish for a Corbyn return.

(2) The Leader of her Majesty's Opposition, the Labour party is called Sir Keir Starmer.

Didn't Brown and Callaghan come into the top job the same way as Truss?

Let's see how she steps up to the plate she got a hell of a lot to do
if not she's out.

And Major, and May. It's not unusual, but they are usually the first choice of the Parliamentary party, not the members.

I think she'll be very active, but it'll be the wrong sort of active..

I think, though, that one thing she'll absolutely have to do is put a lot of money into supporting schools, hospitals, businesses and anything else that will be badly affected by uncapped energy bills.

She won't want to, but I think she'll be forced into it. Like Sunak was with the lockdown cash.

Casdon Mon 05-Sept-22 18:17:20

If I remember rightly Brown was unopposed?

Oh well, it will be fun for the satirists.

When I look at her, I always think of the line from the Beatles song Eleanor Rigby - “wearing the face that she keeps in a jar by the door”. She doesn’t look quite real, somehow.

Yes! Exactly.

Compare her speaking voice now to much earlier recordings of her speaking. She has quite weirdly adopted her current style.

Casdon Mon 05-Sept-22 19:40:45

Apparently the French are calling her The Iron Weathercock. Quite witty.

Luckygirl3 Mon 05-Sept-22 19:45:38

I don't think that people on here have indicated that they want "Labour at any cost" - they just want some integrity and competence at the head of government. Doesn't seem too much to ask.

The voting members of the Conservative party don't seem to be very good at it.
I cant understand why they would choose someone who was not the favourite of the M.P.s

The most sophisticated electorate in the world, as they like to describe themselves.

Uncanny resemblance.

grannydarkhair Mon 05-Sept-22 20:10:55

I think she won because a lot of those who voted for her think she’ll be easily managed/manipulated going by her previous form. She was a Lib-Dem, now a Tory. She was a Remainer, now all for Brexit. She’s changed her speaking voice. She really doesn’t present as being as intelligent as Rishi Sunak.
Also, if RS had been exactly as he is but white, he may well have won. Am I saying that I think racism was a factor in this, yes sadly I am.

Fleurpepper Mon 05-Sept-22 20:13:07

ERG puppet.

AskAlice Mon 05-Sept-22 20:15:04

Ms Truss paid tribute to her "friend" Mr Johnson in her victory speech, adding he would be "admired from Kyiv to Carlisle" for his record in office.

I despair...

DaisyAnne Mon 05-Sept-22 22:42:12

"It has been interesting listening to the 10 o'clock news. There have been resignations, some of which may of course, be "leave before you're pushed". There is also some talk about whether Truss will be able to fill all the Cabinet seats.

With Nadine Dorries leaving to go back to writing her books who can the poor women rely on?

Germanshepherdsmum Mon 05-Sept-22 23:00:30

The loss of Nadine Dorries will be a heavy blow.???

If you're outside the designated admiration zone then it's more likely you'll gain increased servitude.

I'm pretty sure there's going to be an attempt to row back further on devolution. There was also a short article yesterday saying that she's thinking of making the threshold in any independence referendum to be 50% of all registered voters.

Joseanne Tue 06-Sept-22 07:15:46

Interesting how it is starting already with posters making comments about Liz Truss' voice, her features, her hormones etc. Will it not be long before people start delving into her personal life? Really?
