Well thank goodness this new PM debacle is over.. just have to see if what is promised is delivered and hope we all get the support we need?

Callistemon21 Mon 05-Sept-22 14:29:56

We'll have to wait and see.

World events may dictate her decisions but what worries me is that she is hawkish.

Zonne Mon 05-Sept-22 14:34:39

Callistemon, yes, you’re right. I’m not quite sure where I pulled my number (or my percentage) from.

Just thinking how fortunate we are living in a 'democracy'. Just imagine living in a country in which the over-whelming majority have no say who is their Premier Minister, who is their Head of State and who has all the control and rights in the second chamber!!!!!

it does seem as if many GN members do not understand how a leader of any political party, or PM is chosen mid term as well as normally.MP's get to choose and then the party members. This is how it is always done, and I do not recall that people were up in arms about this matter.
I think on balance that Liz Truss will understand the mood of the country better than Rishi Sunak.
I do hope that he is given a job in the Cabinet though, also Kemi Badenoch and Jeremy Hunt who seem capable and sensible.

Beckett. The Conservatives got the majority of seats because of FPTP. However, more people did not vote for them than did. The Tories got 43.63% of the vote but Labour, The Liberal Democrats and the Green Party got a total of 46.24%. So much for democracy!

tanith Mon 05-Sept-22 14:41:42

If she lasts 6mths before her own MPs turn on her I'll be surprised.

BlueBelle Mon 05-Sept-22 14:44:17

They ve done it on purpose to get Johnson back he ll be seen as a ‘great leader’ against her ??‍?g

Exactly GG13.

I do not want Liz Truss to fail, neither would I want Mr. Starmer to fail if he wins the next GE, I didn’t want Mr. Johnson to fail but he let himself and the Country down.

To wish failure on a PM goes hand in hand with wishing failure on the U.K. as the two go hand-in-hand.

I expect the PM to do what is in the best interests of the U.K. whatever the colour of their rosette.

Very well said granny gravy and my sentiments exactly, I can’t believe all the vitriol on this thread…?

I'm afraid that the failure of the UK was inevitable given the Brexit vote, GG13.

All we can hope for is a PM who can go some way to mitigating the damage that has caused. I don't think that Truss is that PM, nor would Sunak have been.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 05-Sept-22 15:02:36

It is being reported that Truss is considering the Labour plan of freezing the price on energy.

Well done if that is the case.

I hope that she fully costs all her economic policies.

Casdon Mon 05-Sept-22 15:04:47

I think it’s more a case of very low expectation than vitriol on this thread Shinamae. I thought, and said on several occasions on other threads that of the two candidates, Sunak would have been a far better choice because although I disagree with much of his policy I recognise that he is a capable politician, and he would have been better for the country. I think you’ll find a lot of other people from all parties feel exactly the same, none of want to see the country go down the tubes.

I could only find it in one online paper, I think it was the Independent.

More have probably reported it now.
It's not a large percentage of the population is it!

Ok so apparently UK ends at Carlisle according to Liz ? Might need a passport to visit Balmoral in that case

How quickly can we rebuild Hadrian's Wall? grin

What will happen to the country now? If it can get any worse she will certainly help it.

It's not vitriol, it is fear.

And I can assure you we all know how the Leader of the Conservative Party, who happens to also be the PM, is elected- unfortunately, yes, we are fully aware.

Actually the majority voted for a Conservative government that IS democracy.

Ah, no it is NOT democracy. In my constituency on several occasions the person who was elected was voted against by more people than for, because of the FPTP system. This is very far from democracy.

As to Truss - I laughed when I heard she was standing, as in a sane world it had to be a joke. I did the same when I heard BJ was in the running for PM, and he was more than a joke - a lying cheating joke with no integrity.

What a sorry state this country is in. I feel in despair.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 05-Sept-22 15:32:03

I’ve just watched her thank you speech.

Omg it was another cheese speech!

“Democracy in action”

this is so odd to me, it is how the leader of any Party is chosen.
should we turn it into a Eurovision Song Contest?
surely GN members who are all older people do realise that it is the method used by all political parties in the UK?

Sallywally1 Mon 05-Sept-22 15:41:34

Even her dad was negative about her!

Fleurpepper Mon 05-Sept-22 15:45:33

Ah well. trust Jonathan Pie to say it as it is

You would have thought so Prentice other parties do not use alternative methods
As for the FPTP method used in elections since the 1950s I believe. Labour have won elections this way which I presume is all fine and dandy.
I suspect by PR you end up with hung parliaments
We had PR for the Brexit referendum and that ended well didn’t it ?

Bramblebee Mon 05-Sept-22 16:01:23

Give Liz a chance, she deserves that at the very least. It’s too easy to criticise, anyone thought of going into politics?

Zonne Mon 05-Sept-22 16:09:49

No we didn’t.

MaizieD Mon 05-Sept-22 16:13:39

No, Rosie1959, we had 'first past the post' on an advisory referendum.

PR only comes into play where there are choices to be made between more than two parties.

exactly this. I think she will appoint some remarkable new people, not the same old types.
