Feeling out of step?

Bless me GN I cannot tell a lie but speaking from a distinctly minority position it seems I must confess the following GN sins-
I like Joules (also Seasalt, White Stuff, Boden and Emma Bridgewater, but have gone off Hotter) and I take exception to my style choices bring disparaged as frumpy
I still consult Delia, Nigella and Jamie-also Katie Stewart
I would not have Bisto in my kitchen - there are excellent stocks in sachets in the supermarket, including turkey
I don’t care for turkey anyway , would rather have a couple of ribs of beef
I hate Tesco and never shop there either in person or on line so I was happy to snooze through the wee small hours, as well as the big ones
I won’t even give a thought to Christmas decs until 10 days before the Day, and that’s only because I am having the whole extended family here on the 18 th, otherwise that would be “decorating” weekend
So as I said, clearly in a minority of one but I take comfort in the Scottish saying “They’re a’ oot o’ step except puir wee Jock”

I have a plaque in the kitchen which states -

I know I am in my own little world but I am happy here.

Whatever anyone else chooses to do, that’s up to them, whatever I choose to do is my decision alone. My taste may not suit everyone but I am not looking for approval or asking others to do likewise. I don’t own a pair of judgy pants either.😂
You never look frumpy Maw. If you were, you would never have directed me to the Sahara site, too tempting. 😉
Live and let live, life is too short to bother what others think.

I’m out of step on GN when I read of all the baking going on. Same with crochet, knitting and sewing. Also house improvements. I say to myself “Call yourself a woman?”😁
I’d rather paint or draw a picture and get out of the house at every opportunity. Allergic to housework too.

In fact there is no such thing as being out of step in one’s likes and dislikes, being different makes the world go round.

Well, I must be out of step. What is the matter with Bisto Gravy Granules?
Years ago I used gravy powder, but found it awful when I tried it again.
Someone will be along to enlighten me soon, I hope.

I think “ahh Bisto”gravy powder is meant to be used with juices from the meat tray by heating the tray over the hob, discarding the fat by tipping and spooning it out, mixing the gravy powder with some cold water to a paste then tip in to hot tin stirring vigorously until it looks and tastes nice ( with the addition of more water/ wine/ more meat juice from the rested meat) reheat in microwave. A bit faffy/messy but it has the edge on “plastic” gravy granules - imo of course😋

It's personal choice and I admit I haven't tried it for years but I found it claggy and tasting of saturated fat, it seemed to stick to the roof of my mouth.

I usually use stock (& wine if one is opened) thickened with cornflour, perhaps with a teaspoon of Bisto powder to add colour. Use meat juices if there are any.

Cornflour is a thing of the past, it seems (see other thread).

Perhaps I should try Bisto granules again for speed.

Auntieflo, it was the palm oil that DD lectured me about. I thought they were quick, and tasted OK, though I still preferred doing what Granmarderby mentions above, or mixing it with the veg water. So I was out of step one way or the other!

Farzanah Wed 16-Nov-22 10:33:08

Not just palm oil (well it’s palm fat that’s listed) but at least 15 other ingredients including colouring Mollygo.
I prefer more natural ingredients personally.

Bisto is only claggy and sticks to your mouth if you use to much and make the gravy to thick. Just added to a tasty and delicious thin gravy, just to thicken it a bit, it is unnoticeable.

Baffled by this obsession with Bisto. I have never used it. I used Burdalls for a while but have never done anything other that reducing wine and stock for, probably, 30 years.

The powder is fine.

It's the granules and someone has said they contain palm oil, perhaps that's why they tasted claggy to me years ago.
I admit I haven't tried them since, they may have improved.

I am definitely out of step but who cares,

Woollywoman Wed 16-Nov-22 13:13:57

A kind person gave me a card years ago which says "The challenge is to be yourself in a world that is trying to make you like everyone else"...
It was so comforting, I put it in a frame and hung it on the wall...:-)

Try a shop which sells British products, AussieGran.

We expect you to report back wink

Utterly with Maw on decorations. Won't get our tree till the week before either. Ditto Tesco, which is too loud and brash for me. I make my own gravy.

Cookery writers I consult are Jamie, Ottolenghi, Bosh, Leon, Green Roasting Tin, Claudia Roden, Dharamjit Singh, and of course Elizabeth David.

I have several Seasalt dresses and a favourite top. I don't think I am frumpy. DH says not but maybe he wouldn't know!

I've got to an age where I don't care whether I'm out of step or not. I like what I like. Know what I dislike. I've worked hard and lived an honest life. Raised a family. Like most folks, have had a few bumps in the road. Tried to be a decent, caring human being. And there are only a few people whose opinions I value and trust. Though, I do have to admit I can be a little judgemental myself on occasion.

Grantanow Thu 17-Nov-22 12:10:39

There's always the possibility that the rest of the world is out of step with you!

Susieq62 Thu 17-Nov-22 12:16:25

I love Gino, Mary Berry, Nigella, Rachel Roddy ( for pasta dishes) River Cottage, Nigel Slater., Jamie for simplicity. I use Bisto. We had bangers and mash last Christmas and it was wonderful.
I shop at M& S, Next, white Stuff, moda e pelle, Phase Eight in the sale, Sea Salt in the sale, my local little village clothes shop has a few goodies and I am 72 still living life to the full. If I got frumpy my daughter would put me in my place.

Sarah74 Thu 17-Nov-22 12:29:03

But it can’t be feasible for us all to ‘be in step”? We’d all be wearing the same clothes / sporting the same hairdo / putting up our identical decorations at precisely the same time…..

dogsmother Thu 17-Nov-22 12:37:59

Can feel a hashtag coming on….Me too! Although can I add I loathe Skechers.

M0nica Thu 17-Nov-22 14:01:04

I have never been in step and never want to be.

MrsKen33 Thu 17-Nov-22 14:08:48

Who are we supposed to be in step with anyway? Who is the arbiter of taste that we all should aspire too?

Dorset Thu 17-Nov-22 14:13:23

This is such an uplifting post 😀 made me smile and gave me comfort as I am exactly like this 😀 life is so precious. It took me over 60 years to stop wanting to please others and prove how good I was in work, home, family etc. I love now just breathing in the air and saying “what would I truly like to do today” 😀 and so I shall 😀

Theoddbird Thu 17-Nov-22 15:22:28

I am unique and proud of it....an ancient hippy who lives peacefully and quietly on my narrow boat home with my two cats. I don't have central heating and my clothes are mostly preloved. I forage for logs that I cut and split. My diet is mainly plant based...not eaten fish or meat since my late 20s. I talk to my friends...the geese, ducks and swans daily...and yes they answer back...hahaha I read posts from gransnet that are emailed to me....they amuse me.

I stopped liking Christmas when it started in July/August (back to back Christmas films on the 'Christmas' channel) and when your worth as a friend or sibling is dependant on the amount you spend or number of presents you provide. By the time the real day dawns I'm well and truly over it. There should be a law that anything Christmassy is banned until the 2nd week in December. Bah humbug!
