There's no place like home

Having been snowed in recently I would love to go away for a short break. I am happy to go anywhere in the UK as not too keen on going abroad on my own.
I usually enjoy being at home but suffered cabin fever in the recent icy weather.

Jaxjacky We have had wonderful holidays in northern Spain, Switzerland and Germany. No flying, all done by train and we are now considering whether it would be practical to travel to Sweden by train.

The irony is, we have booked a short break in northern Scotland, and after looking at every possible alternative, short of a 2 day drive with hotel, we are both heading for 80, we have decided that the only way to do it is by air - my first flight in about 10 years.

I thought it was just me! I’ve always been a home bird, but life has meant we’ve travelled a lot. Facebook today reminded me that thirteen years ago we were flying business class and sharing the fancy airport lounge with celebrities. Those were the days! 🤣

Our last pre-Covid foreign trip was to Australia for three weeks. The last five days, I just couldn’t wait to get in the plane home. Since Covid the appeal of travel has palled, I admit. I think it’s the sheer hassle and uncertainty of it now. We’ve been to places in the UK since Covid but even then, I discovered I’d forgotten how to pack efficiently. I used to be able to do it in my sleep almost. I probably have a foreign trip coming up later this year and I feel some trepidation about it.

If only I could say ‘Beam me up, Scotty!’

No. We love to explore.

I'm not fond to food we haven't cooked, that bit it problematic whilst traveling, apart from that we love the experiences.

We ski, and our favourites are a trip away, no skiing in back garden.

We travel quite a bit, but keep luggage to a minimum to reduce the hassle.
I do miss watching things develop in the garden while I'm away and find myself wondering how the snowdrops are doing for example.

I'm fortunate that I can sleep with my wellies on; DH is a bit more difficult to please but is fine after a day or two.
Part of the pleasure of going away is coming home!

It was very odd when we moved house recently as a holiday had been booked but then our moving date changed.

We moved house, spent one night there and then went away for two weeks. It didn't feel as though we were coming 'home' that time - all very peculiar! The neighbours were very confused!

Not just me then! We travelled all over the world and I'm grateful for the memories but so glad to stay at home now. I've even started using up my "holiday" underwear and extra clothes.

After spending most of my life working away from home and in different countries I am very happy to stay home now. After the last assignment I just said 'no more' and haven't wanted to travel abroad since. We still travel in the UK and have recently investigated train travel (just because I like nice trains) but neither of us has the remotest interest in going abroad really. Every now and again we see something and say 'that looks interesting' but never get so far as actually planning anything. Doesn't bother either of us in the slightest, and I don't see it as a 'shame', just changing perspectives on life and changing interests.

I’m the opposite. We didn’t go anywhere for nearly 3 years when it was Covid as didn’t want to deal with the restrictions. Last year we had a break in Holland France and Turkey only the last one flying. We had lovely times in all but I especially loved Turkey so beautiful and wonderful people . We enjoyed it so much we are doing it all again. Holland for Easter I can’t wait!

DH once observed that I was the only person he knew who got more and more cheerful as the holiday progressed and going home got closer. He was always the holiday planner and booker and I truly doubt I will ever have another holiday now he is no longer here to chivvy me. We had many great holidays and I am so grateful to him for them, but can’t generate much enthusiasm now.

I so love my home and garden. But I so love going away and discover new places. We stick to Europe now, and use train and car, and very rarely planes.

Love to go away- and we never have 1 resort/beach type holidays. We walk, discover, visit ...but when it is time to come home, we love that too.

We had a few nights away last year , we both enjoyed but the bed was so high, I am not short at 5'7" but could just about sit on the bed with my feet on the floor , the mattress was so full you felt it may catapult you across the room, my husband has mobility problems and I had to assist him getting off the bed. But we have said we would go again.

I feel the same as some other posters. I have travelled very widely and independently - often to places like Afghanistan, Syria and Iran which its difficult to visit nowadays.

I stopped travelling because of mobility issues. As my mobility had declined so too has my confidence to organize such a trip. In many ways Ive become more and more insular and even resent people calling without an appointment. The ring doorbell is my friend to filter out the unwanted.

I really detest airports and wonder why they make life so difficult for everyone. I don’t mind all the searching etc , it is one of those necessary evils but the attitude of some of the airport staff - nah. Rude,supercilious and unpleasant. I know there are a lot of lovely ones, too but I would say fifty fifty. I used to hear about Darwin Nazis and think it was just a nasty comment but having been there I can see why it was made.

I agree with the above poster about how people are treated at airports. The excuse sometimes given is that such staff are on minimum wage and this is a stressful job. However I have read about examples of disabled people being treated in a churlish and arrogant way and not being offered any help when passing through security.

We managed 4 holidays last year, with only one flight and have 2 booked so far this year but beyond that I can't muster the will to arrange anything else. Must pull myself together before poor health starts to take it's toll.

I feel exactly the same.

I love my home and love my own comfy bed. I have all the creature comforts around me, plenty of satisfying hobbies and entertainment on tap. An en suite a few steps away from my bed and a cloakroom handy downstairs

I have absolutely no desire to travel and am contemplating not renewing my passport when it runs out

That's pretty much me and deep down always has been. I'm singe now but even when I was married and did enjoy going away as long as it was "Self Catering" and private I'd long to be home after about 5 days.

I do go and stay with family (2.75 hour easy drive and think age and comfort has changed on that score, and 3 nights is my max.

No regrets: I love travel programmes on TV and seeing places all over the world an think wha amazing places and beauty or what an interesting culture, I'd like a "magic carpet" to visit for the day!

I’ve never been able to sleep the first couple of nights away.
We then bought a Motorhome (so we could take our dogs with us easily). I sleep now as I take my bedroom wherever we go!

Like traveling but like op a room with nothing but ac is claustrophobic, regardless of how hot or cold it is outside x

As much as I love my own home and bed, I love to go on holidays and short breaks.

Since Covid I have realised that life is short and I am not getting any younger, so now is the time to get in as many holidays as work and finances allow.

Fortunately, we are both in good health but there is no knowing how long that will last.

I find that most accommodation providers have upped their game when it comes to beds - thanks TripAdvisor etc. - so I tend to sleep quite well when we are away.

Adeline, Blanche must have had a heated toilet seat like me (includes a little night light)! It’s nice coming home to that, especially when my apt is cool!
